Chapter 291 - Shadows and Conflicts

The night enveloped the palace in a cloak of silence, interrupted only by the occasional crackle of torches in the stone corridors. Ryan, heir to the throne, sat on the edge of his bed, elbows resting on his knees and face buried in his hands. Exhaustion weighed heavily on his shoulders, but it was the sadness that clouded his mind. He wished to be stronger, not just physically, but emotionally, to face the challenges that piled up before him.

The name Lyra echoed in his thoughts. The memory of her smile, her gentle touch, was both a balm and a torment. He feared that the darkness he felt growing inside him could push her away forever. And, on top of that, there was Sérgio, a constant shadow, a rival who always seemed to be one step ahead.

A firm knock on the door interrupted his reverie. Before he could respond, the door slowly opened, revealing the imposing figure of Xenorth, the High Consul of the realm. His black cloak billowed slightly as he stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with an audible click.

— Prince Ryan, I apologize for intruding at this late hour. But there are matters that cannot wait.

Ryan looked up, surprised by the unexpected visit. Xenorth had always been a respected advisor, but he rarely spoke directly to him, preferring to discuss state matters with Emperor Marcus.

— High Consul, what brings you here at this hour?

Xenorth took a few more steps forward, positioning himself so that the torchlight cast angular shadows on his austere face. His eyes, deep and penetrating, locked onto Ryan's.

— I come with concerns, Your Highness. Concerns regarding Miss Lyra.

At the sound of her name, Ryan felt a pang in his chest. He straightened up, trying to mask the unease that consumed him.

— What do you mean?

Xenorth stepped closer, further diminishing the distance between them. His voice lowered to a near whisper, yet carried an intensity that sent shivers down Ryan's spine.

— Sérgio is not the only man in this kingdom who harbors feelings for Lyra.

Ryan's heart raced. He narrowed his eyes, trying to decipher the intentions behind the Consul's words.

— Are you insinuating that—

Xenorth raised a hand, interrupting him.

— No insinuation, Your Highness. A declaration. I also love her. And for that reason, I must warn you.

Ryan stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the stone floor with a sharp noise. The proximity between the two men was now minimal, and the tension in the air was almost palpable.

— Warn me? By what right?

Xenorth remained calm, though his eyes sparkled with a dangerous intensity.

— By the right of someone who wishes to protect her. If you cannot guarantee Lyra’s safety and happiness, perhaps it would be better for you to step aside.

The insinuation was clear, and fury began to bubble within Ryan. He clenched his fists, struggling to maintain control.

— Are you threatening me, Xenorth?

The High Consul slightly tilted his head, a mysterious smile playing at the corners of his lips.

— Consider this as advice, Your Highness. Advice from someone who also has interests in Lyra's well-being.

Ryan took a deep breath, trying to calm the whirlwind of emotions consuming him. He knew that giving in to anger would only play into the hands of his adversaries.

— Lyra is free to make her choices. And I trust her.

Xenorth nodded slowly, taking a step back.

— So be it. But remember, prince, love is a powerful force. And those who love are willing to do anything to protect those they hold dear.

With those words, the High Consul turned and made his way to the door, leaving Ryan alone with his tumultuous thoughts.

The night wore on, but for the prince, rest seemed ever more distant. The shadows around him appeared to grow, reflecting the uncertainties and challenges that awaited him.

Lyra remained motionless behind the ajar door, her eyes fixed, her heart hammering as if it wanted to escape her chest. The conversation between Ryan and Xenorth had turned into a veiled confession, and now it had become an open threat. The revelation that the high consul also desired her heart made her tremble inside—not from passion, but from fear.

— You’re not the only one, Ryan — Xenorth said with a voice as cold as steel, his presence dominating the room. — She is more than a princess or a goddess... she is the only flame capable of igniting empires. And I want her too.

Lyra almost gasped aloud, but she held back. Her entire body was on high alert. “Does he want me?” she thought, her fingers gripping the edge of the wall. “This is so much more than political power or influence. They are playing with real... and dangerous feelings.”

— If you dare to touch her with those intentions, I will end you, Xenorth — Ryan’s voice was low, guttural, as if he was holding back fury from within.

Xenorth laughed, without a hint of humor. — It’s already happening, Ryan. You’re losing control, and she can see that. Lyra is strong, rational... and knows how to recognize when a man is falling apart. You are sinking into your own darkness, prince.

Ryan stood up with difficulty, his eyes burning like embers. — Say what you want, but she loves me.

— That won’t stop her from listening to me — Xenorth retorted. — One day, when she grows tired of your chaos, of your anger... she will come to me. And I will be waiting.

That was enough.

Lyra stepped in, pushing the door open forcefully and causing both men to turn in shock.

— Are you hearing your own voice, Xenorth? — she said, with a calm tone that masked the hurricane inside her. — I came here to check on Ryan. Not to listen to one of your delusions of conquest.

Xenorth tried to compose himself, but his face grew paler. — Lyra... I...

— Don’t you dare use my name as if you have any right to it — she interrupted, crossing her arms. Her eyes were hard, and the lilac energy around her body began to vibrate, contained.

Ryan felt the tension accumulate in the room and positioned himself between the two.

— Lyra, did you hear everything?

— Everything — she replied, not taking her eyes off Xenorth. — And, to be honest, I’m disgusted. First Sergio, now you... You both think possessing me is synonymous with victory. But I am not a trophy. And I am not passive.

Xenorth smiled, even defeated. — I only spoke the truth. You are too powerful to be with someone unstable.

Ryan stepped forward. — Leave now, before I lose the little patience I have left.

With one last look filled with desire, contempt, and something undefined, Xenorth left.

When the door closed, Lyra took a deep breath. The room still seemed to vibrate with the tension they had left behind.

— He won’t stop — she said, not looking at Ryan. — And Sergio won’t either. They will keep trying to tear us apart.

— And you? Will you stay with me despite this? — Ryan asked in a low voice, almost fearful.

She turned slowly. There was pain in her eyes, but also conviction. — As long as I can hold your hand without burning myself... I will stay. But Ryan... don’t fight for me. Fight for us. For you.

He nodded, and for the first time in a long time, he didn’t try to hide the tears that streamed down his face.

Lyra stepped closer and wiped the drops away with her fingertips, gently.

— You are not alone — she whispered.

Outside the room, out of sight of the two, Xenorth walked down the dark corridor with a cold smile on his lips. He had lost the battle in that moment, but the war... ah, the war was just beginning.
