Chapter 289 - The Weight of Eternity
The room was enveloped in a thick, almost sacred silence. Only the soft sound of Ryan's breathing filled the space, like the whisper of an ancient wind coming from the mountains of Zyara. Shadows danced on the walls, shaped by the faint bluish light emanating from the crystals suspended from the ceiling. Lyra sat in the armchair beside the imperial bed, her eyes fixed on him.
Ryan slept with tense muscles, his brow furrowed, as if even in his state of rest, he was waging internal battles. The sheets were slightly tangled around his body, and his chest rose and fell with an irregular rhythm, as if the very air was hard for him to breathe.
Lyra watched him, a pain she could no longer hide, not even from herself.
Before her lay the man she loved. The prince of the empire, their destinies intertwined by something far greater than they could comprehend. But she also faced danger. The vivid memory of the darkness that had enveloped him in the previous days—the black mist that emerged from within him like a dark calling—still sent chills down her spine.
She brought one hand to her own chest, trying to contain the weight that the emotional suffocation imposed. How had they reached this point? When had Ryan, so noble and upright at heart, begun to yield to those shadows? And more than that: how far was he willing to go?
Her eyes filled with tears. She wasn't crying; she was simply feeling. The tears didn’t fall; they only accumulated like a silent storm on the verge of explosion.
“You were my sky,” she thought, “and now it seems you are walking closer and closer to the abyss.”
She slowly rose from the armchair and approached the bed, leaning in slightly, her fingers hovering in the air, wishing to touch his face… but she hesitated. Would her touch wake him? Would he have another outburst of anger like the previous one?
Instead, she carefully sat on the edge of the bed, pulling one of the nearest pillows onto her lap, embracing it as if she could press Ryan against her chest and protect him.
She remembered what her mother, Amara, had told her hours earlier: “There are things that even love cannot contain, Lyra. But love can be the beacon in the middle of the storm.”
She wanted to believe that. She wanted to believe that her love would be enough. That her hands would be firm enough to hold Ryan if he were about to fall. But doubt was a constant whisper, cruel and relentless.
Because Sergio was still there.
The malignant shadow that loomed over the court, infiltrating every decision, every whisper, every fear. And somehow, he and Ryan were connected. As if parts of their souls were similar… or worse, mirrored.
She had seen him manipulate darkness. She had seen his eyes turn red for a moment. She had seen his body consumed by an energy that did not belong to the light of the imperial crown.
And yet, she loved him.
Loved him like a star loves the night sky. Like the wind loves the sea. Like time loves eternity. It was something that went beyond logic, reason, and even the instinct for self-preservation.
She finally brought one hand to his face. His skin was warm, but not feverish. His expression, even in sleep, seemed to carry the weight of worlds. There was suffering in Ryan, and Lyra could feel it as if it were her own.
— I am here… — she murmured, as if that could protect him. — And I will be, even if you cannot see.
Her fingers slid to his hair, brushing aside a lock that fell over his forehead. She remembered when he had kissed her for the first time. How his voice trembled as he promised her protection. She recalled the laughter, the stolen glances in the palace corridors, the nights they talked until dawn. Those moments felt so distant now. As if they belonged to another life.
The tears finally began to fall.
Silent, warm. Drops that trickled down her face without a sound, wetting the pillow she still held.
Ryan stirred slightly, as if sensing her presence even in unconsciousness.
She leaned in and pressed her forehead against his, trying to transmit calm, trying to convey the faith she still carried.
— Come back to me — she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. — Please, Ryan. Don’t let him take you. I need you here. The empire needs you. But… more than anything… I love you.
The word was spoken with such pain that she barely recognized herself.
“I love you.”
It was a confession. A silent scream. A prayer.
The doors of her heart were open, even though fear told her to close them. Even though reason told her she needed to protect herself from him. Because loving Ryan now was a risk. It was like dancing with danger. But she didn’t know how not to love.
And then, something happened.
His body relaxed. The tension in his face eased. And for a moment, he whispered something incomprehensible. She leaned in closer.
— Lyra…
The name escaped his lips like a breath. Almost a sigh.
She closed her eyes, feeling pierced by that sound. He recognized her. There was still Ryan within him. There was still light.
— I am here… — she repeated, more firmly now.
She took a deep breath. It was time to act. There was an empire at stake, a love to protect, an enemy to defeat. But, above all, there was a heart to rescue.
Ryan's heart.
And if to save him she needed to descend into the deepest shadows, she would do it.
She was Lyra. She was Zyara. She was made of light and shadow, and no darkness would stop her from fighting for the one she loved.
She looked at him once more, and with a gentle kiss on his forehead, she stood up, resolute.
She would fight. Against Sergio. Against the court. Against fate.
And for Ryan.
