89: The Queen’s Secret (Part 2 of 3)
Elara moved with the grace of a predator, her eyes never leaving the shadow mage as she led him deeper into the mirrored chamber. The torches flickered, their golden glow casting shifting reflections of the two figures onto the endless glass walls. The other mages lay scattered behind them, slumped against the floor or the walls, drained and lost in their illusions. But Elara did not look back. She had already taken what she needed from them.
Now, her attention was solely on him.
The shadow mage walked beside her with slow, deliberate steps, his hands resting casually at his sides. Yet there was an unmistakable sharpness in his posture—an awareness that told her he was not so easily deceived. Unlike the others, he had not succumbed to the visions. He had not faltered, nor had his energy been pulled from him without notice.
Elara found that thrilling.
She glanced at him from beneath her lashes. “You did not seem as affected as the others,” she murmured.
His lips curled into a knowing smirk. “Illusions are the work of those who fear reality,” he replied. “I’ve learned to see through them.”
Elara chuckled, stepping closer. “You think this is merely illusion?”
He tilted his head, watching her carefully. “Is it not?”
Her fingers grazed the edge of his sleeve. His body was warm, the energy humming beneath his skin a stark contrast to the coldness of the room.
“Perhaps,” she whispered. “Or perhaps there is something more…”
She turned, placing her hand flat against one of the mirrors. The surface rippled, the reflection distorting before solidifying into a new image.
The shadow mage’s eyes narrowed as he stepped closer, drawn in despite himself. Within the mirror, he saw himself standing atop a ruined battlefield. His shadow creatures surrounded him, an army forged from darkness, but they were not attacking. They were bowing.
He watched his mirrored self raise a hand, power crackling at his fingertips, bending the very fabric of the world. The sky above was shrouded in black mist, the ground beneath cracked and lifeless.
A kingdom had fallen before him.
His breath slowed. “What is this?”
Elara’s voice was soft, coaxing. “Your future… Your potential.”
His reflection smirked in the mirror, eyes gleaming with an intoxicating mixture of dominance and satisfaction.
A flicker of hunger flashed across the mage’s face.
She saw it. And she pressed forward.
“Tell me,” she murmured, stepping behind him. “Have you ever wanted more?”
Her breath was warm against his neck. Her fingers trailed lightly over his wrist, the simple touch laced with something potent.
He did not pull away.
“I have power,” he said, his voice calm but edged with curiosity.
“Yes,” she agreed. “But not enough.”
His jaw tightened. She had touched something deep within him, something unspoken.
Elara leaned closer, her lips just at the shell of his ear. “You could have it all.”
The mirror shimmered again, the image shifting. This time, it was not him standing in victory, but another figure—one obscured by light, too distant to make out, but undeniably a threat. His army of shadows no longer bowed. They writhed, cowered, and then—vanished.
Destroyed.
A future where he was powerless.
His hands clenched into fists. “Lies.”
“Is it?” she whispered.
He inhaled sharply, his muscles coiled as though ready for battle. But he did not step away. He did not turn from the vision.
Elara smiled to herself. He was already caught.
Her fingers traced up his arm, a slow, deliberate path. “You are unlike the others,” she said. “Stronger. Wiser.”
He smirked, his confidence flickering back into place. “And yet, here we are. You trying to tempt me with visions.”
She laughed softly. “Tempt you?” Her voice was velvet and smoke. “No, my dear… I am offering you a glimpse into what you already desire.”
He did not answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the mirror, on the two futures that flickered before him—one of conquest, one of ruin.
Elara moved in front of him, placing her hands lightly on his chest. She could feel his heart beneath her fingertips, steady but strong. A challenge, a warning.
He looked down at her, the corner of his lips twitching. “You are dangerous,” he murmured.
Her fingers pressed slightly against him. “And you like that.”
He chuckled, low and dark. “Perhaps.”
Their eyes locked. The tension in the air grew thick, charged with something beyond magic.
Then, she rose onto the tips of her toes, her lips grazing his.
The kiss was slow at first, testing, teasing. But when he did not pull away—when instead he deepened it, his hands coming to rest against her waist—she knew she had him.
The power between them pulsed, raw and electric. His shadows stirred at the edges of the room, responding to his heightened state.
And beneath it all, her magic curled around him, invisible tendrils slipping into the gaps of his defenses, unnoticed, unfelt.
She was taking from him.
His strength, his power—it trickled from his core into hers, flowing with each touch, each breath.
She felt it filling her, the sensation intoxicating. The essence of shadow magic was unlike the others—richer, darker, more potent. It did not merely burn within her; it wrapped around her soul, a living thing that pulsed and twisted in delight.
She almost moaned at the feeling.
But she had to be careful. He was not like the others. He was strong.
His grip on her tightened suddenly, fingers pressing into her waist. “You taste like secrets,” he murmured against her lips.
Elara smirked. “And you taste like power.”
He chuckled, but the sound was slightly slurred. His head tilted, as though a sudden wave of exhaustion had washed over him.
He blinked.
She saw the flicker of confusion in his gaze.
Good.
“Perhaps…” he exhaled, his voice softer now, dazed. “Perhaps I would like to see more.”
Elara cupped his face, tilting it toward hers. “Then let me show you.”
She turned him slightly, positioning him before another mirror. This one was different. It did not shimmer with possible futures—it merely reflected. But not him. Not his real self.
Instead, the moment his gaze met the glass, it twisted.
He saw himself crumbling. His body dissipating into smoke, his shadow creatures evaporating into the void. His strength, his magic, his essence—all slipping away into nothingness.
His breathing hitched.
His fingers curled, as if trying to summon his power—
But nothing came.
The realization struck him in an instant.
His head snapped toward Elara, and for the first time, he saw it.
The wicked gleam in her eyes.
The slow, satisfied smile.
“You…” his voice rasped, his body suddenly sluggish, weak. “What have you done?”
Elara took a slow step back, tilting her head. “You were right,” she mused. “Illusions are for those who fear reality.”
She lifted a hand, flexing her fingers. Shadows curled at her fingertips—his shadows.
His power.
His stomach twisted.
Panic surged through him, but when he tried to summon his magic again, nothing happened.
Elara’s smile deepened.
“Now,” she whispered, “you have something to fear.”
Before he could react, she flicked her wrist—
And ice shot through his veins.
