Chapter 100 - The Battle for the Throne (Part 2 of 2)
The castle trembled under the force of the battle. Magic clashed in the air, raw power crackling like a storm trapped within stone walls. The imposter’s stolen magic surged wildly, unstable and unpredictable, yet devastatingly strong. Fire licked at the pillars, ice shattered across the floor, and the wind howled through the grand hall as she threw everything she had at Elara.
Elara stood firm.
Golden energy pulsed from her hands, steady and controlled. She blocked each attack with precise movements, her magic weaving around her like a protective shield. But she wasn’t just defending anymore.
She was pushing back.
The imposter’s eyes burned with fury as her attacks failed to break through Elara’s defenses. "Why won’t you fall?" she shrieked, her voice raw with frustration. "I have the power of kings, of mages, of gods! You are nothing compared to me!"
Elara’s expression didn’t waver. "You have stolen power," she said, her voice calm despite the storm around them. "But you don’t understand it. You never earned it."
The imposter let out a growl of rage and lifted both hands. Lightning crackled between her fingers before exploding toward Elara. The entire hall illuminated with a blinding flash as the bolt tore through the air.
Elara didn’t flinch.
She raised one hand and caught the lightning in her palm. The stolen energy writhed, fighting against her grip, but she commanded it. The golden glow of her magic wrapped around the bolt, bending it, shaping it—before she hurled it back.
The imposter barely had time to scream before the blast sent her flying, slamming her into the steps leading up to the throne. She gasped, coughing violently, but still she tried to rise.
Elara stepped forward. "This ends now."
The imposter forced a laugh, though it was weaker now. "You can’t kill me," she taunted, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth. "You don’t have it in you."
Elara’s fingers curled, her magic humming at her fingertips. For a moment, she hesitated. She had never wanted to become a killer, never wanted to stain her hands with the weight of a life taken.
But then she looked at the throne—the symbol of her kingdom, the people she had sworn to protect.
She thought of the lives lost, the suffering this woman had caused.
The imposter had taken everything from her.
Elara took a deep breath, her eyes flashing with determination. "You’re right," she said softly. "I don’t have to kill you."
The imposter’s expression flickered with confusion. "What—"
Before she could finish, Elara raised her hand. Golden light exploded from her palm, a surge of pure energy enveloping the imposter. The stolen magic within her began to unravel, tearing away from her body in brilliant streams of light.
The imposter screamed.
The castle walls trembled as magic ripped free from its unnatural vessel, returning to its rightful owners. The flames died. The wind calmed. The ice melted. The unnatural darkness that had seeped into the stones of the castle vanished.
The imposter writhed on the floor, her form shifting, cracking—until finally, with one last cry of agony, she shattered.
The golden light faded, leaving behind only silence.
Elara stood still, her chest rising and falling with deep, steady breaths. The battle was over.
A sudden stillness filled the hall, broken only by the distant sound of footsteps.
Then a voice, warm and familiar. "Elara."
She turned.
King Alden stood at the entrance of the hall, his face filled with quiet relief. The guards who had once been enemies now stood behind him, their weapons lowered, their eyes wide with awe.
Elara swallowed hard, her exhaustion catching up with her. "It’s done," she said softly.
Alden nodded. "You saved the kingdom."
The weight of his words settled over her, heavy yet freeing all at once. She had reclaimed her throne—not through vengeance, but through justice.
The people of the castle began to gather, whispers spreading among them. They looked at her not with fear, but with admiration. The true queen had returned.
Alden stepped closer, his voice lower now. "You knew you were stronger, didn’t you?"
Elara nodded slowly. "I was afraid," she admitted. "Afraid of what I might become. But I know now—power doesn’t make someone good or evil. It’s what they choose to do with it."
Alden’s lips quirked into a small smile. "Then I think the kingdom is in good hands."
The doors to the hall burst open. Several of the mages who had fought alongside her rushed in, their robes torn, their faces streaked with soot and blood. One of them, an older man with a deep scar along his cheek, took a step forward.
"Your Majesty," he said, bowing low. "The castle is secured. The remaining enemies have either fled or surrendered."
Elara nodded. "And the people?"
"Safe," another mage answered. "But they are waiting for you."
Elara hesitated. The weight of the moment pressed against her chest. For years, she had been forced into hiding, doubting her place, questioning her own strength.
Now, there was no doubt.
She glanced at Alden. "Walk with me?"
He smiled. "Always."
Together, they stepped through the shattered doors of the hall.
Outside, the kingdom awaited.
Hundreds of people had gathered, their faces filled with uncertainty, hope, and fear. Elara took a deep breath, then raised a hand. Golden light pulsed from her palm, a gentle, soothing glow.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd, but then, slowly, one by one, they began to kneel.
A young girl, no older than ten, stepped forward. She clutched a tattered cloth doll to her chest and looked up at Elara with wide eyes.
"Are you really our queen?" she asked softly.
Elara knelt, meeting the girl’s gaze. "Yes," she said. "And I will always protect you."
The girl smiled, then turned and curtsied deeply.
That was all it took.
A wave of cheers erupted through the streets. The sound of celebration rang through the air, filling every corner of the kingdom. Elara closed her eyes, allowing herself one deep, steadying breath.
She had reclaimed her throne.
Not as a conqueror.
Not as a tyrant.
But as a queen.
And as the first light of dawn broke through the shattered windows of the grand hall, Elara and Alden stepped forward—stronger than ever before.
