Chapter 155

Chapter 155
Breaking the Chain

The tension in the safe house was palpable as Ethan paced the length of the room, his jaw clenched tightly. Langston sat slumped in a chair, a sheen of sweat on his forehead as he fidgeted with his cufflinks. Lila stood near the window, her sharp gaze scanning the street below for any sign of trouble.

“Start talking,” Ethan demanded, his voice cold and unwavering. “Who’s Vaughn working with? How deep does this go?”

Langston swallowed hard, his hands trembling. “It’s...it’s way bigger than you think,” he stammered. “Vaughn is not working alone. He’s part of a network that consists politicians, corporate tycoons, even law enforcement. They have been operating for years, with the syndicate serving as their enforcers.

Ethan stopped pacing, his eyes narrowing. “And what’s their endgame?”

Langston hesitated, then sighed in defeat. “Control. They want control over everything; commerce, government policies, even the black market. Vaughn is their face, but he’s replaceable. The real power lies with the Council.”

“The Council?” Lila repeated, her voice sharp.

Langston nodded. “A group of ten individuals. Their identities are carefully hidden. They operate in secrecy, exerting influence from the background. Vaughn carries out their directives, safeguarding their interests.

Ethan exchanged a glance with Lila. This wasn’t just about exposing the syndicate anymore. It was about exposing a network that lurked everywhere.

Yelena’s voice crackled through the comms. “Ethan, I’ve got something. I hacked into Langston’s encrypted files. A private jet is due to depart from a remote airstrip on the city's outskirts in three hours.

Ethan frowned. “Who’s the passenger?”

“Vaughn,” Yelena replied. “He’s fleeing. But here’s the twist, the manifest also lists a shipment of classified documents. If those files get out of the country, we’ll lose any chance of exposing the Council.”

Ethan’s fists clenched. “We can’t let that happen. Yelena, send the coordinates. We’re moving now.”

The drive to the airstrip was tense and silent. Lila kept her hand on her weapon, her mind racing with possibilities. Ethan focused on the road, his determination etched into every line of his face.

As they neared the airstrip, Matteo’s voice came through the comms. “I have feeds of the area. Vaughn has got heavy security, armed guards patrolling the perimeter and at least two snipers on top of the building.”

“Can you take out the snipers?” Ethan asked.

“Already lined up,” Matteo replied. “Just give the word.”

“Wait for my signal,” Ethan said. “We need to time this perfectly.”

They parked the car at a safe distance away and approached the airstrip on foot, using the cover of darkness to stay hidden. The hum of the jet’s engines filled the air as Vaughn’s team prepared for takeoff.

Ethan raised his hand, signaling Matteo. A soft pop echoed in the distance as the first sniper fell, followed by another. The guards on the ground didn’t notice on time until it was too late. Ethan and Lila moved in swiftly, taking out two guards with quick shots.

The remaining guards ran for cover, but they were no match for the coordinated assault. Within minutes, the area was surrounded, and Ethan and Lila stormed the jet.

Despite the chaos outside, Vaughn sat calmly in the cabin. He looked up as Ethan and Lila entered, his lips curling into a smug smile.

“You’re too late,” Vaughn said, his voice dripping with arrogance. “The Council will replace me, and you will still lose.”

Ethan leveled his gun at Vaughn. “We’ll see about that. Where are the files?”

Vaughn chuckled. “Do you think I’d be stupid to leave them here, unprotected? You’re playing a losing game, Cross.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed, his finger tightening on the trigger. But Lila stepped forward, her voice cutting through the tension. “He’s bluffing. He wouldn’t risk leaving without insurance. Check the cargo hold.”

Ethan kept his gun targeted at Vaughn as Lila searched the jet. Moments later, she returned with a briefcase and a laptop.

“Got it,” she said, placing them on the table.

Vaughn’s composure faltered as Ethan opened the briefcase, revealing stacks of documents and a portable drive.

“You underestimated us,” Ethan sneered. “And now you’re going to pay for it.”

Vaughn was under restraint when Matteo and Yelena arrived. Matteo handed Ethan a set of zip ties, grinning. “Looks like we’ve got ourselves a trophy.”

Ethan nodded. “Take him to the car. Yelena, analyze these files. We need to know exactly what we’re dealing with.”

Yelena plugged the internal drive into her laptop, her fingers flying across the keyboard. Within minutes, her eyes widened.

“Here we have it,” she said, her voice tinged with disbelief. “Everything we need. This map outlines the entire operation of the Council.

Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Good. Then we use this to bring them down.”

As they drove back to the safe house, Ethan’s mind raced with possibilities of how things could end. Although they now held the advantage, the Council was determined to resist.

Lila placed a hand on his arm, her voice soft and steady. “We are getting more closer. We can do this.”

Ethan glanced at her, his resolve strengthening. “We will. No matter what it takes.”

While Matteo kept a close watch on Vaughn, Yelena diligently worked to decode the remaining files back at the safe house.

“This is bigger than we thought,” Yelena said, her voice tinged with awe. “These documents don’t just implicate the Council, they expose their influence on global events. Wars, economic crashes, assassinations... they have orchestrated everything.”

Ethan’s fists clenched. “Then we use this to destroy their power structure piece by piece.”

Lila stepped forward, her gaze fierce. “We will start with the people funding them. Cut off their resources, and they will crumble.”

As they strategized, Vaughn sat in the corner, his smug demeanor replaced by quiet desperation. He knew his time was running out.

But as the team finalized their plan, a sudden explosion rocked the building, sending everyone scrambling for cover.

“What the hell was that?” Matteo shouted, drawing his weapon.

Yelena checked the security feeds. “They’ve found us. We’ve got incoming… heavily armed.”

Ethan’s eyes darkened. “Then let’s show them what happens when they come after us.”

With weapons drawn and determination burning in their eyes, the team prepared to face the oncoming assault. The fight was not over yet, but they were ready to end it.

And this time, they wouldn’t stop until the syndicate and the Council were nothing but a memory.
