Chapter 301

Chapter 301

The observation room gradually emptied as Arthur, Charles, Marcus, and Noor left to coordinate the observatory’s defenses. The monitors continued displaying Lily’s message, but no one attempted to open the archive immediately. For the first time in days, there was nothing Kayla could do except wait.
She walked toward the large glass window overlooking the city. The lights below shimmered against the darkness, reminding her that while her world had been turned upside down, life beyond the observatory continued as though nothing had happened.
Jason joined her a few moments later without saying a word.
For a while, they simply stood together.
Silence had become comfortable between them.
Kayla rested her head lightly against his shoulder and released a tired sigh.
“I don’t remember the last time I wasn’t afraid.”
Jason slipped an arm around her waist.
“I do.”
She looked up at him.
“When?”
“The night we danced in the garden.”
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
“You remember that?”
“I remember everything about that night.”
His answer made her laugh softly.
“I stepped on your foot.”
“You did.”
“I almost fell.”
“I caught you.”
She smiled wider.
“You still haven’t let me forget.”
“I never will.”
Kayla turned to face him completely.
“So that’s your favorite memory?”
Jason shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what is?”
He gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear before answering.
“My favorite memory hasn’t happened yet.”
She frowned playfully.
“How can that be?”
“Because I’m saving it.”
She folded her arms.
“And what exactly is this mysterious memory?”
He smiled in that quiet way she had come to love.
“The day all of this is over.”
She looked at him curiously.
“The day we wake up without security briefings, hidden files, or people trying to tear us apart.”
His voice grew softer.
“The day I make you breakfast, even if I burn it.”
Kayla laughed.
“You definitely will.”
“I probably will.”
“And then?”
“We’ll spend the morning arguing over whose coffee tastes better.”
She smiled.
“You don’t even drink coffee.”
“I will if it makes you smile.”
Her heart warmed.
Jason reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out something small.
She looked down in surprise.
It was the silver bracelet she had lost months ago.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for this.”
“I know.”
“You had it?”
He nodded.
“I found it after one of our meetings.”
Kayla looked at him in disbelief.
“So you’ve been carrying it around all this time?”
“I kept thinking I’d give it back.”
“And you forgot?”
He smiled sheepishly.
“No.”
“I liked having something that belonged to you close to me.”
The confession caught her completely off guard.
She looked at the bracelet before looking back into his eyes.
“When did you become so romantic?”
“I’ve always been romantic.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“You threatened me the first time we met.”
“I was romantically threatening.”
Kayla burst into laughter.
“That isn’t a real thing.”
“It is now.”
She gently shook her head before stepping closer and wrapping her arms around his neck.
“I love you.”
The words came naturally.
Without hesitation.
Without fear.
Jason’s smile slowly disappeared, replaced by an expression so full of emotion that it almost took her breath away.
“You have no idea how long I’ve waited to hear you say that without anything standing between us.”
She rested her forehead against his.
“Nothing is standing between us anymore.”
He cupped her face with both hands.
“I love you too, Kayla.”
“More than revenge.”
“More than revenge.”
“More than my past.”
“More than my past.”
“More than tomorrow.”
He smiled.
“Forever.”
Kayla closed the small distance between them, kissing him slowly.
There was no urgency.
No fear.
No desperation.
Only warmth.
Only love.
For those few precious moments, the weight of the world disappeared.
The secrets, the danger, Ethan, Gabriel, and every unanswered question faded into the background.
It was just the two of them.
When the kiss ended, Jason rested his forehead against hers again.
“When all of this is over,” he whispered, “will you marry me again?”
Kayla blinked in surprise.
“We’re already married.”
“I know.”
He smiled tenderly.
“But this time, I want to marry you because there’s nothing left forcing us together.”
Tears gathered in her eyes.
She laughed through them before gently taking his hand and intertwining their fingers.
“Yes.”
She looked into his eyes with a smile that reached her heart.
“I’ll marry you as many times as you ask.”
Just as Jason leaned in to kiss her again, a soft knock sounded on the observation room door.
Neither of them moved.
Jason sighed dramatically.
“I was hoping the world would wait another five minutes.”
Kayla laughed, still holding his hand.
“Apparently, the world has terrible timing.”

The knock came again, this time a little louder.
Jason closed his eyes dramatically before letting out a resigned sigh.
“I was hoping whoever is outside would eventually give up.”
Kayla laughed, the sound warm enough to make him smile despite everything that had happened over the past few days.
“You know Arthur well enough to know he won’t.”
“I know,” Jason admitted. “I was just pretending to be optimistic.”
She reached up and straightened the collar of his jacket, noticing that it had become slightly wrinkled during their embrace.
“You look exhausted.”
“So do you.”
“I wasn’t asking about me.”
“Neither was I.”
Their eyes met, and another comfortable silence settled between them.
Jason gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear before allowing his fingertips to linger against her cheek.
“I’ve missed this.”
Kayla smiled softly.
“We’ve been together this whole time.”
“Not like this.”
She understood exactly what he meant.
For weeks, every conversation they shared had revolved around danger, strategies, hidden enemies, or painful discoveries from the past. They had forgotten what it felt like to simply enjoy each other’s company without wondering what crisis would interrupt them next.
“I miss the little things,” Jason continued. “I miss watching you fall asleep on the couch while pretending to finish a movie.”
“I never pretended.”
“You were asleep within twenty minutes.”
“I was resting my eyes.”
He laughed.
“You were snoring.”
Her mouth fell open in mock offense.
“I do not snore.”
“You absolutely do.”
Kayla gently slapped his shoulder.
“You are impossible.”
“And yet you married me.”
She folded her arms.
“I may need to reconsider.”
Jason’s expression immediately became serious.
“Too late.”
Before she could react, he slipped an arm around her waist and drew her closer.
“There are no refunds.”
She laughed so hard that tears gathered in the corners of her eyes.
“You sound ridiculous.”
“I’ve been told that before.”
“By me?”
“Mostly by you.”
She rested her head against his chest again, listening to the familiar rhythm of his heartbeat.
“You know,” she whispered, “when I first met you, I thought loving you would be the biggest mistake of my life.”
Jason kissed the top of her head.
“And now?”
“Now I think not loving you would have been.”
His embrace tightened ever so slightly.
“There were so many moments when I almost lost you,” he confessed quietly. “Sometimes I still wake up in the middle of the night just to make sure you’re beside me.”
Kayla looked up at him, her eyes shimmering with emotion.
“You never told me that.”
“I didn’t want you to know how frightened I was.”
She gently cupped his face.
“You don’t always have to be strong for me.”
“And you don’t always have to carry everyone else’s pain.”
She smiled sadly.
“I suppose we’re equally stubborn.”
Jason nodded with a grin.
“That’s probably why we work.”
Kayla leaned forward and kissed him once more, slower than before, pouring into that single kiss every unspoken promise she carried in her heart. When they finally separated, neither of them hurried to speak. They simply stood there, forehead against forehead, grateful for the rare moment of peace they had found in the middle of chaos.
The knock sounded for a third time.
This time Arthur’s amused voice came through the door.
“I’m happy to know the two of you are still alive, but unless you’ve decided to ignore the rest of us forever, we have something you need to see.”
Jason groaned dramatically.
“You see? Terrible timing.”
Kayla laughed and intertwined her fingers with his.
“No matter what’s waiting on the other side of that door, I’m glad I get to face it with you.”
Jason smiled with quiet certainty.
“So am I.”
Still holding hands, they walked toward the door together, neither of them realizing that the simple promise they had just made would soon be tested in ways neither of them could have imagined.
