85 - Rising Tensions
Kael POV

Kael stood at the large oak table in the council room, his broad shoulders tense, the weight of leadership pressing down on him more than ever. The maps in front of him seemed to mock him. The air was thick with unspoken concerns, and the tension in the room was palpable. The rogue pack’s remnants were still a threat, an annoyance really.

Aria sat across from him, her eyes scanning the reports as Elias and Finn stood on either side. The two of them had been Kael’s constant companions through this war, his trusted lieutenants who knew him better than anyone. But even Elias, always calm and composed, couldn’t hide the furrow between his brows. Finn, ever the optimist, had his usual smirk, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes today.

Kael cleared his throat, the words forming more slowly than he wanted. “I can’t shake the feeling we’re missing something.”

“You’re right to be cautious, Kael,” Elias spoke up. His voice was steady, but Kael could sense the unease lurking beneath. “We’ve seen signs of movement near the northern borders. We’ve sent scouts to investigate, but there’s been nothing concrete.”

Kael’s gaze narrowed. The rogue threat had been dealt with, but the notion of them lingering, unaccounted for, was enough to make Kael’s wolf stir restlessly inside him. He shifted his weight, resting his palms flat against the table. “We know they’re still out there. I won’t let them reassemble. We finish this now, before they gain any more ground.”

Finn crossed his arms, leaning against the wall, his tone light but serious. “You think they’ve been waiting for us to let our guard down? That’s how they work, right? They’ve never been organized—just opportunistic.”

Kael shook his head, the frustration building. “They’ve gotten smarter. And now they’re getting bolder.” He glanced over at Aria, who had been quietly listening, her brow furrowed in thought. There was something about her presence, the quiet strength she radiated, that made the weight of his decisions feel less heavy. But today, the burden of being Alpha was nearly suffocating.

Aria caught his gaze and smiled softly, the corners of her mouth curving upward.

She reached over and placed her hand gently on his, the warmth of her touch grounding him. “We’ll handle this together, Kael. We’ve already proven we can.” Her voice was a quiet reassurance, a balm for his restless mind.

Kael squeezed her hand, grateful for her unwavering support. He looked back to the others, his jaw clenched. “I need all the intel we can gather. I want the scouts doubled, and I want every border monitored. If there’s a shift, I want to know about it before they move again.”

Finn nodded, his usual grin returning. “I’ll get the men on it. You’ll have a report by nightfall.”

As Finn left to prepare, Elias stood, his gaze unwavering. “We’ll get them, Kael”

Kael’s gaze met Elias’s, and for a moment, the tension between them seemed to hang in the air. There was a shared understanding between them—an unspoken truth. Kael had always shouldered the burden of leadership alone, even when his pack stood with him. But now, with Aria by his side, he wasn’t sure he could keep this distance anymore.

Elias gave a short nod, his lips pressing into a thin line. “I’m with you, Alpha. Always.”

Kael turned to Aria, his gaze softening. Her presence steadied him, grounding him in a way no one else could. “We’ll deal with this,” he murmured to her, his voice low but certain. “Together.”

She gave him a reassuring smile, her fingers tightening around his. “We’ve already faced worse, Kael. This is nothing we can’t handle.”

Kael leaned in, pressing a kiss to her forehead. The moment was brief, but in it, he felt an undeniable bond—a connection that went beyond their roles, beyond the pack. It was something that belonged only to them.

Before they could say more, the door to the council room opened, and a messenger stepped inside, holding a letter. He handed it to Kael with a bow.

“Alpha Kael, a letter from Alpha Theron of Moonfang,” the messenger said.

Kael broke the seal and scanned the contents quickly. His jaw tightened as he read, his eyes narrowing. Aria stood beside him, her brow furrowing in concern as she read the shift in his expression.

“What is it?” she asked softly.

Kael passed her the letter, his fingers brushing hers. “Theron’s concerned about something. Apparently, rogues were seen near their borders. They’re not sure who’s behind it, but it seems there’s still more to the rogue threat than we realized. Again.”

Aria read the letter, her face growing more serious as she took in the details. “So, the rogue pack might not be finished after all?”

Kael sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair. “It’s looking that way.”

A cold knot of worry tightened in his chest. If there were more rogue leaders out there, the peace they’d fought so hard for could be shattered. He’d promised Aria that they’d build a future together, but how could he keep that promise if the threat of war loomed over them again?

Aria placed the letter down and looked up at him, her gaze unwavering. “Kael, we can’t control everything. We’ve done everything we can to protect the pack. But we’ve also shown that we can rise above the threat. We’ll do it again.”

Kael nodded slowly, the weight of her words sinking in. She was right. They couldn’t stop every threat, but they could face it together.

He looked at her, his heart swelling with admiration. “You always know what to say.”

Aria smiled softly, her eyes sparkling. “It’s not always easy. But we have each other’s backs, Kael. And we always will.”

Kael pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her. For a brief moment, he allowed himself to close his eyes and forget about the looming threats. For this one moment, he was at peace.

But then the reality of their situation crept back in. He pulled away reluctantly, his fingers lingering on her arms. “We’ll handle it, Aria. We’ll prepare for the worst, but we’ll fight for the future we want. Together.”

She nodded, her expression firm. “Together.”

Kael turned his attention back to the letter, his resolve strengthening. This wasn’t over. The rogue threat might still be out there, but with Aria by his side, he knew they could face whatever came next.

As they left the council room, Kael’s thoughts were already turning toward the future. He had a pack to protect, a mate to cherish, and a battle to fight.

And he would do whatever it took to ensure that peace, once earned, would never be taken from them again.
