Blood and Shadows
The battlefield was chaotic. The scent of blood clung to the air as Selene fought to stay on her feet. Every muscle in her body burned from exhaustion, but she refused to fall.
A Forsaken warrior lunged at her with unnatural speed and she barely had time to react before sharp claws slashed toward her throat. She twisted at the last second, dodging the blow, and drove her claws into his gut. A strangled gasp escaped the warrior's lips before he crumpled to the ground.
Selene turned to find Kalen locked in combat with two Forsaken warriors. He was fast—deadly. His movements were precise, his blade a blur as he cut down his enemies. But even he was struggling. The Forsaken were strong, stronger than before.
Something was wrong.
Selene’s instincts screamed at her. These weren’t ordinary Forsaken warriors. Their movements were sharper, their speed unnatural. Someone had enhanced them.
She barely had time to think before a massive force slammed into her, knocking her off her feet. She hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the breath from her lungs.
Above her stood a figure cloaked in darkness.
Orion.
His silver eyes gleamed in the moonlight. "Did you really think this was going to end in your favor, little wolf?"
She gritted her teeth, pushing herself up despite the pain. "I don’t believe in fate."
He smirked. "Then you’re a fool."
He raised his hand, and the shadows around him thickened, tendrils of darkness writhing like living creatures. Selene braced herself. She had to stop him.
Before she could move, a powerful snarl cut through the air. Kalen lunged at Orion, his sword aimed straight for the warlock’s heart. But the shadows reacted faster, forming a solid barrier that sent Kalen flying backward.
Selene's heart clenched as Kalen hit the ground, unmoving.
No.
Orion chuckled darkly. "Your mate is strong, but not strong enough."
Her vision blurred with rage. A deep, primal force stirred inside her—the same force she had felt the night she first shifted. The pain in her body faded, replaced by a surge of power unlike anything she had ever known.
Her wolf surged forward, taking control.
A brilliant silver glow surrounded her as she shifted mid-lunge, her body moving with unnatural speed. She aimed straight for Orion, her claws glowing with a strange, ethereal light.
For the first time, Orion’s expression flickered with something between confidence and fear.
Selene struck, her claws ripped through his shadows, tearing into him with enough force to send him stumbling back. Orion let out a guttural snarl, gripping his side where she had struck him. Dark blood seeped through his fingers.
She didn’t stop.
She lunged again, faster this time, forcing him to retreat. Orion’s silver eyes darkened, and with a flick of his wrist, shadows exploded outward, sending Selene flying.
She crashed into the ground, her vision blurring. Pain shot through her ribs, but she refused to give up.
Through her hazy vision, she saw Kalen stir. Relief flooded her. He was still alive.
But Orion wasn’t done.
He raised his hand, and the shadows around him thickened, forming a massive, writhing beast. It let out a chilling roar, its glowing red eyes locked on Selene.
"You’ve amused me long enough, little wolf," Orion said coldly. "It’s time you learned your place."
Her heart kept pounding. She was strong, but could she defeat this?
And then—
A whisper.
Not from Orion. Not from the Forsaken.
But from within her.
A voice she had never heard before, yet somehow, she knew it belonged to her.
You are more than what they made you.
Selene's breath hitched. A warmth spread through her chest, and suddenly, the silver glow around her intensified. The power inside her surged, more potent than ever.
Orion’s smirk faltered.
Selene rose to her feet, her entire body radiating with power. "No more games, Orion. This ends tonight."
She launched forward, faster than ever before, her claws crackling with energy. The shadows around him tried to defend him, but they disintegrated the moment they touched her light.
His eyes widened. "What—?"
Selene struck with all her strength, slashing through him. The warlock let out a strangled cry as her claws ripped through his chest.
Orion stumbled back, his form flickering. The shadows around him trembled, growing weaker.
"This isn’t over," he hissed, his silver eyes burning with hatred. "I will return. You cannot stop what has already begun."
With that, his body dissolved into darkness, vanishing into the night.
Silence.
The battle had ended.
Selene stood there, her breath heavy, her body trembling. The Forsaken warriors, now without their leader, scattered into the night.
A hand touched her shoulder. She turned to find Kalen standing beside her, his gaze full of pride and relief. "You did it."
She exhaled, her heart finally slowing. "It’s not over. But we won this battle."
He nodded. "And we’ll win the next one too."
Selene looked around at her pack, at the warriors who had fought beside her. They had suffered losses, but they had survived. And she had finally embraced her true power.
No more doubts. No more fear.
She was ready for whatever came next.
