The Gathering Storm
Selene’s breath hitched as she stared at the torches burning in the distance. The flickering lights stretched across the horizon like an unholy constellation.
An army was coming.
“Kalen.” Her voice was barely a whisper, but he heard the urgency in it.
He followed her gaze, his golden eyes narrowing. “Damn it.”
She felt his grip on her hand tighten. “How long do we have?”
He exhaled sharply. “A few hours, at most.”
Selene’s pulse pounded in her ears. Malakar wasn’t wasting any time. He was striking now—while they were weak, while their wounds were still fresh.
She turned to Kalen. “We need to warn the pack.”
“Agreed.”
Together, they sprinted back into the pack house.
Alpha Tobias was already waiting in the war room, his face grim. Luna Mariana stood beside him, her expression unreadable. Daemon and Clara had arrived as well, their exhaustion evident but their resolve unwavering.
Selene didn’t waste a second. “Malakar’s forces are here.”
Tobias’s eyes darkened. “How many?”
Kalen answered. “Hundreds.”
Gasps rippled through the room. Some warriors shifted uncomfortably, but Tobias didn’t flinch.
“Then we fight.”
Selene nodded. “We need a strategy. Malakar will expect brute force, but we can’t win on numbers alone.”
Daemon stepped forward, rolling his shoulders. “I can hold the eastern border with my unit. Clara, you and the witches take the ridge. Use the high ground to your advantage.”
Clara nodded. “Consider it done.”
Tobias turned to Selene. “And you?”
She swallowed hard. “I need to go to the front lines.”
Kalen stiffened beside her. “No.”
She turned to him. “Kalen—”
His jaw clenched. “You nearly died today. You need to rest.”
“And if I don’t fight, we all die,” she countered. “This isn’t about what you want. It’s about survival.”
Silence stretched between them. Then, reluctantly, he nodded. “Fine. But I’m fighting with you.”
She exhaled. “Then let’s end this.”
—
The pack moved like a well-oiled machine. Warriors armed themselves, witches gathered their enchantments, and the air filled with the electric tension of an impending storm.
Selene stood at the edge of the training grounds, rolling her shoulders. Her power simmered beneath her skin, but she knew she would need more than magic to win.
“Nervous?”
She turned to see Daemon smirking at her.
She snorted. “Terrified.”
He chuckled. “Good. That means you know what’s at stake.”
Her smirk faded. “Daemon… if we don’t make it—”
He cut her off. “We’ll make it.”
She wanted to believe him.
The night air was thick with tension as they took their positions. Selene stood at the front lines, her heart hammering in her chest. Kalen stood beside her, his expression hard.
Then, a single horn sounded.
The ground trembled.
Shadows slithered over the battlefield as Malakar’s army emerged. Wolves clad in black armor, warlocks wielding twisted magic, creatures that belonged in nightmares.
And then, at the center of it all, Malakar himself.
His green eyes gleamed with amusement as he stepped forward. “You should have accepted my offer, Selene.”
She stood her ground. “And become a monster like you? No thanks.”
Malakar sighed. “Pity.”
He flicked his wrist, and darkness exploded across the battlefield.
“Attack.”
Chaos erupted.
Wolves clashed, claws raking against armor. Magic crackled through the air, lighting up the night like a deadly storm.
She barely had time to react before a shadow beast lunged at her. She dodged, summoning a blade of pure energy. With a swift strike, she severed the creature’s head.
Kalen fought beside her, moving like a golden blur. He tore through enemy wolves, his fangs dripping with blood.
But Malakar was nowhere to be seen.
Her stomach twisted. He’s waiting.
A piercing scream cut through the battlefield.
Selene whirled around—just in time to see Clara fall.
“No!”
She sprinted toward her friend, but before she could reach her, a dark tendril wrapped around her ankle and yanked her back.
Selene hit the ground hard, the wind knocked from her lungs.
Malakar loomed over her.
“I warned you.”
He raised his hand—dark magic swirling around it.
Selene’s mark burned.
Not this time.
She summoned everything she had, light and shadow intertwining.
And then, she struck.
A blinding explosion erupted between them.
When the dust settled—
Selene and Malakar were gone.
