Chapter 50 Chapter 50.
Jane's POV.

I dashed out quickly before he would see my tears. I stayed behind the door, my tears falling freely now.

I hated it. God, I hated everything. Especially the aching feeling in my chest that was making feel like my heart was about to explode in pieces.

I sniffed in quickly, wiping my tears away with my hands. I had promised myself countless times that I wouldn't cry anymore. At least not because of him. But still I kept breaking my promise everytime I see him.

Maybe I would have to leave the country eventually because only then would I not see him any longer. At least for a while until he finds me again... because I finally realize that Adrian is like a curse. A curse I cannot escape, neither can I break it.

The door opened, and I quickly composed myself and walked away. Not bothering to find out who was coming out of the office.

I heard footsteps behind me, and I hastened my steps forward. I don't want to see him or hear what he has to say.

Finally out of the hospital building, I hailed a taxi, and got in as quickly as possible like I was running away from a dangerous assassin who's after my life.

"The courthouse," I instructed the driver, and he drove away.

I leaned back into the seat, exhaling deeply as I let fresh air full my lungs.

Then the sound came in my head, slow and steady... the heartbeat. My baby's heartbeat.

My hands moved instinctively to my abdomen where my bump was slowly growing, still invisible when I had clothes on.

"You're alive," I whispered, a smile breaking through on my lips. "Thank you for staying strong for mummy... despite daddy being a total dick."

"I'll do anything it takes to make sure you stay alive and well..." I came to a pause, gasping immediately as something struck me. I hadn't gone shopping for my baby yet. God, what kind of a mother am I ?

"I'm sorry, baby," my hand caressed my abdomen. "Mommy is really sorry. She promises to make it up to you this weekend... probably."

Soon we reached the courthouse. I stepped out, and paid thr driver. Glancing at the time on my wristwatch, Ethan should still be in courtroom by now.

I proceeded to the office, greeting people along the way and overhearing some gossip about me and Adrian that I paid less attention too.

My feet abruptly came to a halt when I overheard something.

"Are you sure we can trust Attorney Reed with this case?" I heard a voice say.

"Why can't we?" Another voice responded. "She won that difficult case a few days ago, and adding together her good records and achievements from the past, we absolutely can trust her."

The first voice scoffed. "Trust her? A divorcee? Someone who's divorced with Adrian Blackwood? Can such a person be trusted? With a marital case?"

There was a short silence before the second voice slowly responded, "you're right."

"Absolutely right," I added, turning in to the corner they were, stepping right into view with a smile on my face.

The two women's faces went pale for some seconds before gaining their colors again. "Attorney Reed?" One of them spoke, the one I recognized to be the second voice.

"I assume you're the one with the case," I smiled at her.

"Yes," she answered. "My husband is such an asshole."

"So is mine," I replied.

Her eyes widened, and I flashed her an even brighter smile.

"Congratulations," I extended a handshake to her. "You've just signed yourself a brilliant attorney."

The woman stared at my hand, and hesitantly she raised her hand to meet mine but the other woman spoke, and her hand dropped halfway.

"Why should we trust you?" The other woman shot at me. "Why should we trust that you can handle this case and make us victorious?"

"Because I know exactly how it is to have an asshole as a husband," I shot back. "So a mere..." I scanned her look from head to toes, she has no wedding ring on her finger, and obviously dressed in a revealing way, her face telling me she's nearing forty. "...single woman is the one we should trust? Someone who has no idea of marriage and is probably waiting for this marriage to fall apart so she'll galdly marry her friend's husband, is this the person we should trust?"

"Hey!" She raised her hand to hit me.

"We're in the courthouse, and I'm an attorney of the law who's also a pregnant woman, are you sure you can handle this case?" I said, and her hand hung midair. "Oh, of course, I'm sure you can," I nodded. "That's not too much of a difficult case for a single woman to handle, right?" I wriggled my eyebrow at her.

Her hand midair slowly curved into a fist, her jaw clenching hard as she dropped her hand.

The woman with the case gave a quiet chuckle, one I didn't miss.

"So what do you say?" I faced the woman, extending my hand to her again. "Partners?"

She took my hand with a smile. "Partners."

I smiled in return. "You won't regret it."

I looked at the other woman who was already fuming in anger, and extended my hand to her. "We can be partners too."

She looked at my hand and at my face, and back at my hand. "We can never be partners," she spat coldly.

I chuckled lowly. "You'll regret it."

She rolled her eyes, and looked away.

I faced the woman with the case. "Attorney Janine Reed," I introduced myself properly.

"Helen Shawn," she replied.

I nodded with a short smile. "Shall we head to my office so we can talk properly?"

"Sure, attorney," she nodded.

I led the way to my office. I stepped in, and ushered the woman in with a warm smile.

As soon as the other single woman was about stepping in, I blocked her way. "I don't shelter non partners," I smiled and shut the door in her face.
