Trial by Fire
Trial by Fire
Glass broke as bullets tore through the hospital window. Valentina threw herself to the floor, pulling Detective Chen down with her.
"Get down!" she yelled, her heart pounding in her ears.
More shots rang out. Patients and nurses screamed, jumping for cover. Valentina crawled toward the door, glass cutting into her hands.
"We need to get to Alessio," she said, her voice steady despite her fear.
Chen nodded, drawing her gun. "Stay behind me."
They crept into the hallway, where chaos had exploded. People ran in all directions. Through the confusion, Valentina spotted three guys in black tactical gear moving purposefully toward Alessio's room.
"They're here for my brother," she realized aloud.
Without waiting for Chen, Valentina grabbed a fire extinguisher from the wall and charged forward. She swung it hard, catching one attacker by surprise. He crumpled to the floor as Chen fired at the others, causing them to take cover.
"Go!" Chen yelled to Valentina. "I'll hold them off!"
Valentina raced down the hallway, her heart in her throat. When she reached Alessio's room, she burst through the door to find Dante standing protectively in front of her brother's bed. His arm was bleeding, but he held a gun steadily pointed at the door.
"Three more coming," Valentina gasped.
Dante nodded grimly. "Help me move Alessio."
Together, they removed the monitors and helped Alessio to his feet. He was weak but aware, leaning heavily on Dante.
"We need another way out," Valentina said, searching the room.
"Service elevator," Alessio offered, his voice strained. "End of the hall."
Valentina peeked into the hallway. Chen was trading gunfire with the attackers, keeping them pinned down. But they were running out of time.
"I'll create a distraction," Valentina decided. "You get Alessio to the elevator."
"Val, no—" Alessio argued, but she had already slipped out the door.
Valentina grabbed a hospital cart and shoved it hard down the hallway toward the attackers. As they turned to fire at it, she yelled to Chen, "Now!"
Chen emerged from cover, firing accurately. One attacker fell. The others fled around the corner, giving Dante and Alessio their chance.
Valentina watched as Dante half-carried her brother toward the service lift, moving surprisingly fast despite his own injuries. His fierce determination to protect Alessio was clear in every painful step.
As they reached the elevator, more gunmen emerged at the far end of the hallway. Valentina's blood ran cold. They were stuck.
Then something strange happened. Instead of fear, a calm clarity washed over her. She saw the entire situation like a chess board, every move and countermove suddenly clear.
"Chen! Fire sprinklers!" she called out.
The officer immediately understood, firing a shot at the ceiling. Water rained down, soaking everything and limiting vision. In the chaos, Valentina slid across the wet floor to join Dante and Alessio at the elevator.
As the doors closed, bullets pinged against metal. They were safe, for now.
"How did you know that would work?" Alessio asked, leaning against the wall for support.
Valentina shook her head, shocked herself. "I don't know. I just... saw it."
"The command center," Dante said as the elevator dropped. "It's what I would do."
"What?" Valentina asked.
"If I were leading this attack, I'd target the hospital's command center next. Cut communications, security cameras."
Valentina nodded. "Then that's where we need to go."
When the elevator doors opened to the basement, they moved carefully through dimly lit corridors. Alessio's breathing was heavy, but he refused to slow them down.
"I can make it," he insisted, though Valentina could see the pain in his eyes.
They found the command center with its door already blown open. Inside, two security guards lay asleep. Monitors showed attackers moving throughout the hospital.
"There must be at least ten of them," Valentina said, studying the screens.
"Blackwood's best," Alessio agreed. "Eleanor had a special team for... difficult problems."
"Like us," Dante added sadly.
Valentina studied the security feeds, that same strange clarity leading her thoughts. "They're searching floor by floor. But they don't know we're down here."
She turned to the control panel, fingers flying over buttons she somehow knew how to use. "I can seal off sections of the hospital, direct them where we want them to go."
Alessio and Dante traded surprised looks.
"How do you know how to do this?" Alessio asked.
"I don't know," Valentina revealed. "It's like... I've always known, but never needed to until now."
As she worked, Valentina trapped several attackers between locked doors, sending others away from patients. She called Chen through the hospital's communication system, coordinating their strategy.
"You're a natural leader," Dante noted, impressed.
"Just doing what needs to be done," Valentina answered, but she felt a new confidence growing inside her.
Suddenly, the main doors to the command center shook. Someone was trying to break in.
"They found us," Alessio said, getting to his feet.
Dante positioned himself in front of Alessio again, gun ready. "Val, is there another way out?"
Valentina checked the building plans on a computer. "Maintenance tunnel. It leads to the parking garage."
As they hurried toward the tunnel entrance, Valentina stopped at a computer terminal. "Go ahead. I need one minute."
"What are you doing?" Alessio asked.
"Finding out who sent them." She downloaded files onto a flash drive as the main doors began to break.
Dante pulled Alessio toward the tunnel. "Hurry, Val!"
The files finished copying just as the doors burst open. Valentina dove into the tube, pulling the heavy cover shut behind her. Bullets ricocheted off metal as she rushed after Dante and Alessio.
The cave was narrow and dark. They moved as quickly as they could, following emergency lights that cast strange shadows. When they finally reached the parking garage, Chen was ready with a car.
"Hospital's secure," she reported. "SWAT team arrived. Most of the attackers are down or captured."
"We need a safe house," Valentina said, helping Alessio into the car.
As they drove away from the hospital, Valentina studied the files she'd stolen. What she found made her blood run cold.
"These orders didn't come from a Blackwood operative," she said. "They came from City Hall."
"City Hall?" Alessio repeated in amazement. "That doesn't make sense."
"Unless The Architect has connections there," Valentina reasoned. She scrolled through more files, her eyes widening. "There's more. According to this, half the city council is compromised."
Dante leaned forward. "So we're not just fighting what's left of Eleanor's people."
"We're fighting the whole system," Alessio finished sadly.
Valentina stared out the window at the flooded city, still fighting to recover. How could they fight an enemy rooted in the very institutions meant to protect people?
As if reading her thoughts, Alessio squeezed her hand. "You can do this, Val. What you did back there... you're meant for this."
"For what?" she asked.
"Leading," Dante said simply. "Fighting back. You see things others don't."
Before Valentina could reply, the car screeched to a halt. A roadblock loomed ahead – police cars with flashing lights.
"That's not right," Chen muttered, grabbing for her radio. "I didn't call for a roadblock."
The radio crackled with static, then a chilling voice came through: "Detective Chen, hand over the Moretti siblings and Dante Russo immediately. This comes from the highest authority."
Chen paled. "That's the Police Commissioner."
"The Architect," Valentina whispered, holding the flash drive. "We know too much now."
As officers approached their car with weapons drawn, Valentina made a split-second choice. She grabbed Chen's phone and snapped a picture of the damning files on her screen.
"What are you doing?" Alessio asked.
"Making sure the truth gets out, no matter what happens to us," Valentina answered, hitting send.
The message went to Rico at the radio station, along with one word: "Broadcast."
As the police surrounded their car, Valentina faced her brother and Dante. "Whatever happens next, we fight together."
The car doors were wrenched open, and Valentina found herself looking down the barrel of a gun held by someone she'd trusted.
"I'm sorry," Chen said, her eyes cold and foreign. "But The Architect must be obeyed."
