Chapter 29
CHAPTER 29

Zara's POV

The morning light coming through the curtains seemed too weak for the storm that was raging inside me. Magnus kissed me again last night. This time, he didn't hesitate; it was fierce and all-consuming, as if he had marked me as his. I had fallen asleep next to him, safe for the first time in years, but safety was only a dream in this world.

The whispers weren't whispers anymore when I left the room that morning. They threw knives at my back in plain sight.

"She's put a spell on him."

"Nerissa was faithful. He threw her away for someone else.

"An outsider made a promise to Ashen!"

As I walked down the narrow hall, their words burned me. Then one voice rose above the rest, sharp and angry:

"She's bad news." She will kill him and all of us.

I stopped moving. Doran, a broad-shouldered man who was one of Magnus' warriors, stepped forward. His glare was so hot that it could have burned holes in me.

He yelled, "You should never have been allowed to stay." "Our Alpha's judgment is clouded because of you." We need him to be strong, not chasing after a wolf that belongs to another pack.

My cheeks got hot right away. A part of me wanted to run away, but another part—the part Magnus had awakened—wouldn't let me.

I said firmly, even though my voice shook, "I don't belong to Ashen." "And I don't belong to anyone else."

Doran sneered. "Then go before you bring Magnus down with you."

Magnus showed up before I could answer. His presence made the hall quiet, like a knife cutting through rope. His cold, unyielding eyes swept over the wolves that had gathered.

“Is this what I trained you for?” he demanded, voice like thunder. “To mutter like cowards behind my back? To insult the woman under my protection?”

“She is not just any woman!” Doran snapped, bold enough to stand his ground. “She is Ashen’s bride! If he attacks us because of her, it will be on your head, Alpha.”

The tension thickened. My breath caught, my stomach twisting, waiting for Magnus’ reply.

But instead of arguing, Magnus stepped forward and in one fluid motion had Doran by the throat, slammed against the wall.

“Say her name with respect,” Magnus growled, eyes glowing dangerously. “Or you will learn what it means to challenge me.”

Doran gasped, clawing at Magnus’ grip, until finally Magnus released him, letting him crumble to the floor. The hall was silent except for Doran’s ragged breathing.

Magnus turned, his gaze sweeping the rest of them. “If any of you doubt me, then stand against me now. Otherwise, remember this—Zara stays. She is under my protection. My word is law.”

No one moved. No one dared.

But I saw it in their eyes: doubt hadn’t died. It had only gone quiet, simmering beneath the surface like embers waiting for a spark.

Magnus’ POV

The confrontation left a bitter taste in my mouth. My people obeyed, but obedience wasn’t loyalty. They would follow me into battle, yes, but they no longer followed me without question.

And Zara had seen it. She had stood in the crossfire, fragile yet unyielding, and every word spoken against her had carved a wound I couldn’t heal.

I wanted to promise her it would get better. But even as I opened my mouth, Viktor stormed in, his expression grim.

“Magnus,” he said, “scouts just returned. Ashen’s forces are moving.”

My blood iced. “How many?”

“Too many. He’s testing us first—raiding our border villages, burning crops, driving families from their homes. It’s only a matter of time before he comes for us directly.”

The room fell silent. I could feel every warrior’s eyes on me, waiting for orders.

Zara’s voice broke through, soft but steady. “This is because of me.”

I turned to her sharply. “No. This is because Ashen is a tyrant who destroys everything he can’t own. You didn’t cause this war, Zara. He did.”

She swallowed, but didn’t argue. Still, I saw it in her eyes—the guilt, the heavy burden she carried.

Viktor folded his arms. “We can’t keep running from this, Magnus. If Ashen wants a war, we must be ready to strike back.”

“And we will,” I said. My voice was iron, though inside, the storm churned. My people doubted me, Ashen was tightening his noose, and at the center of it all was Zara—my impossible choice, my undeniable truth.

Zara’s POV

Later that night, the air in the town apartment was suffocating with tension. Every warrior was on edge, sharpening blades, whispering strategies, arguing over whether they would survive Ashen’s wrath.

I stood by the window, watching the moon rise, when Magnus came up behind me. His reflection in the glass was hard, shadowed by burdens too heavy for one man.

“You heard Viktor,” he said quietly. “Ashen has started his assault.”

I nodded. “Then we fight.”

His eyes met mine in the glass, startled by the conviction in my tone. “You’re not a soldier, Zara. This isn’t your fight.”

“Yes, it is.” I turned to face him fully, stepping close enough that I could feel the heat of him. “Ashen claimed me like I was property. He wanted to break me, and he’ll never stop until I’m either chained or dead. That makes it my fight, Magnus. And I won’t sit in the shadows while you bleed for me.”

His hand rose, brushing a strand of hair from my face, his touch achingly tender despite the storm outside. “You’ll never bleed alone,” he said softly. “Not while I still stand.”

For a moment, the world was just us—the war, the whispers, all of it faded. But then a loud crash shook the walls, followed by the sharp ring of steel and the roar of wolves.

Magnus’ eyes snapped wide. “They’ve found us.”

Magnus’ POV

The attack came swift, brutal.

Ashen’s scouts had breached the town, their wolves tearing through the narrow streets with feral howls. Fire licked at the night sky as humans screamed and scattered, oblivious to the true war raging in their midst.

I grabbed Zara’s hand, pulling her behind me. “Stay close.”

Viktor and the others were already fighting at the door, steel flashing, blood spilling. Doran, still nursing his bruised pride, looked at me once—then charged headlong into the fray, claws out, proving his loyalty the only way he knew how.

“Magnus!” Zara cried, her eyes wide with terror as a massive wolf lunged toward us.

I met the beast with a snarl, my own wolf surging beneath my skin, half-shifted claws ripping into fur and flesh until the attacker crumpled lifeless at my feet. My wound burned, but adrenaline drowned the pain.

More came. Dozens. This wasn’t just a raid. This was Ashen’s message.

Through the chaos, I caught sight of Zara, holding a fallen dagger, her hands trembling but her stance unyielding. She wasn’t hiding. She wasn’t cowering. She was ready to fight beside me.

And in that moment, with fire raging, steel clashing, and my people bleeding for me, I knew one truth with terrifying clarity:

If I lost her tonight, nothing else would matter.

\---

Zara’s POV

The world was fire and blood. I slashed at a wolf who lunged too close, my arms shaking, the dagger slick with sweat and crimson. Fear clawed at me, but beneath it was something fiercer—rage. Rage at Ashen for trying to own me, rage at myself for ever thinking I was powerless.

Beside me, Magnus was a storm, his strength terrifying and beautiful. But even storms break eventually, and I saw the way he faltered when his wound tore open again.

“No!” I cried, rushing to his side as another wolf lunged. Instinct took over—I drove the dagger into its throat before it could reach him.

Magnus caught me, his arm around my waist, his breath ragged. “Zara…” His eyes burned with something deeper than fire. “You’re mine.”

And then, over the battlefield, a howl split the night—low, commanding, unmistakable.

Ashen had arrived.
