Chapter 40 40
CHAPTER FORTY
LUCIAN'S P.O.V
"Your mate?"
He nodded, a goofy grin on his face.
"Yep."
I grinned at him as I leaned even closer.
"That's awesome man! I'm happy for you."
He smiled, looking away from me. I quickly a slight smile which I could see wasn't reaching his eyes. I frowned at his behavior. This wasn't the reaction of someone happy to have found his mate.
"Are you alright? Have you seen her? Did she reject you? Why do you act not so happy."
He blew out a breath as he bent to hold his head in his hands.
"I'm happy Lucian. And no, she didn't reject me."
I threw my hands up in exasperation.
"Then what is it?".
He opened his mouth to answer but a knock stopped him. I snitched the air and smiled. It was Aurora, I could scent her at the door.
"Come in, its open."
She pushed the door open and walked in, the air in my lungs nearly whooshed out as she walked in, dressed in a tight pair of jeans and a white hoodie.
"Hi." She gave a small wave while smiling softly. "Hey Griffin." He smiled at her.
"Hey." I replied, "How your discussion with Kieran go?"
Her eyes widened slightly, she looked away.
"Yeah...the discussion...it was...okay, I guess. I'll tell you later but right now I have to go somewhere. I just wanted to tell you about it, in case."
My eyes narrowed unconsciously.
"Where are you going?"
"Off to Talia's house."
I noticed Griffin wincing, wait a minute.
"We have a lot to catch up on. And she might have threatened to come barging in here if I didn't come see her in the next Thirty minutes."
I chuckled at the idea of Talia coming here to make a scene.
"Alright, bye. Please be safe and come back early. At the sight of danger, call me and run."
She rolled her eyes while nodding.
"Yeah, yeah, fine. Its almost like you're talking to a kid, I can take care of myself." She headed towards the door. "Bye Griffin!"
She called out, he raised his hand and waved with a defeated expression on his face.
"That's what they all say but here we are." I muttered.
She showed me the middle finger before finally closing the door. As soon as she was gone, I focused on Griffin again. As I watched his shadowed face, I zoomed onto him.
"Don't tell me...its Talia?".
He flinched, then nodded with a sigh.
I sat back in my seat.
"Damn, we are mates to best friends huh?"
"I guess so." He answered lifelessly.
"So...what's the problem?"
"She has a boyfriend?"
My eyebrows shot up, "But she knows you are her mate."
He shook his head and groaned.
"That's the thing, she doesn't know."
Then how do you know she's your mate without her knowing?"
I was confused.
He slumped in his seat and threw his head back.
"I found out yesterday while going home after dropping you guys. It was dark and then I saw her. She didn't notice me because she was drunk and a guy was holding her hand. I'm sure she thinks the guy is her mate now."
"Then why didn't you stop her to tell her?"
He shrugged, throwing his hands up in the air in a helpless motion.
"I don't know. I guess I got too scared. Like a coward I left after hearing her call him babe. I'm such a stupid coward.".
This was complicated. I tapped my fingers on my desk while rubbing my jaw in thought.
"How about we tell her through Aurora. They are best friends and I'm sure if Aurora spoke to her she will listen."
He shook his head as he faced me.
"No, thanks man but, I wouldn't like to solve this myself. Anyway I can." Then he frowned and kicked his legs. "Of all the times I could have found out, why did it have to be yesterday, huh? I've met that girl several times and not once did I feel a thing for her. Then why...why now? And I really wanted to go tell her that she is my mate so we can accept each other and I can get to bury my face in that smooth neck of hers. But she has a boyfriend and that is pissing me off." He finished in a growl.
Wow!
I stared at him in shock. This was the first time I was seeing him so worked up and also the longest sentence he had ever spoken at once. The mate bond was really doing things to him.
"Listen Griffin, you have always been a cool and level headed guy. I need you to calm down and think this straight. I'm sure there is or are ways for you to tackle this. You're you. Griffin, my best friend and my beta. I've known you for a long time to know that you will never make a stupid choice. If the moon goddess made Talia your mate, then Talia is your damn mate and nobody is going to take her away from you. Got that?".
He swallowed, his adams apple bobbing as he nodded at me grateful, his eyes a misty sheen as a few tears rolled down his cheeks.
"Thank you Lucian. What you just said, it boosted my morale. Thank you."
"Anytime, I'll always be here ready to give you advice. You were, have been and are still here for me so I will do the same for you. So please, cheer up will you? I don't think Talia will like it if she finds out her mate is actually a cry baby."
A laugh burst from his mouth, he held his stomach.
"Fuck off, I'm not a cry baby."
"Then stop crying."
"Fine..." He cleaned his eyes with the back of his hand. "...see, no tears."
"That's my guy." I cheered him. "Now if you would like to know, the old man says he has no idea about what happened."
He frowned, "You believe him?".
I nodded, "It pains me to say this but I actually do, he wasn't responsible."
He cursed under his breath.
"Then what do we do do now?"
