Chapter 65 (Final Chapter)
Chapter 65 (Final Chapter)
Lyla’s POV
The sun rose pink over the shattered courtyard, washing the stones in soft gold as if the night before had never happened.
But it had.
The bodies, the broken pillars, the blood, Kaiden’s rogues scattered or dead, Damon defeated, Dalia imprisoned, Kaiden lying unconscious in chains the evidence was everywhere. A battlefield reborn by morning light.
And in my arms…
Maya.
Alive.
Breathing.
Warm.
Her tiny hands clutched my torn tunic, her tears soaking my shoulder. She smelled of smoke, of dirt, of fear but also of the sister I had loved since childhood.
She whispered my name again and again, voice cracking. “L-Lyla… I thought you died… I thought I’d never..."
“I’m here,” I breathed, holding her tighter. “I will never leave you. Not again. Not ever.”
Rowan stood a few feet away, watching us with quiet reverence. Blood streaked his jaw, bruises darkened his ribs, his shirt hung in tatters but his eyes…
His eyes were steady. Warm in a way I’d never seen before.
The pack slowly gathered around us as dawn brightened the sky, warriors bowing their heads out of respect, women wiping tears, elders whispering blessings. The fear that had haunted them for weeks finally lifted, replaced by hope.
A hope they could feel in the air.
A hope coming from me.
A golden aura still flickered faintly around my skin, soft as candlelight, as if my wolf had not fully settled after the battle.
Maya pulled back and touched my cheek with trembling fingers.
“You saved me.”
“No,” I smiled through tears. “We saved each other.”
Rowan stepped closer. “Maya, you’re safe now. This is your home as long as you want it.”
She stared up at him, unsure, until Rowan knelt to her level.
His voice softened, deep and steady: “I promised Lyla long before she knew it, that anyone she loves has a place with me.”
Maya’s eyes widened. “Are you her mate?”
My entire soul stopped.
Rowan froze too, mid-breath.
“Maya!” I whispered, mortified.
But Rowan…
Rowan smiled.
Soft.
Knowing.
Beautiful.
“Not yet,” he said. “But the Moon… seems to have ideas.”
My heart slammed so hard I felt dizzy.
Maya blinked innocently. “So… she’s your mate. You just didn’t say it.”
He laughed under his breath. “You’re very perceptive.”
My cheeks burned. “Rowan..."
He stood and offered me his hand.
“Walk with me.”
We left Maya with the healers and walked into the quiet forest path behind the courtyard.
The morning breeze lifted the scent of pine and damp moss, and every step felt heavier with everything unsaid between us.
When we reached the old stone archway at the edge of the woods, the place where Rowan had first found me months ago, he stopped.
Turned to face me.
His eyes scanned every inch of my face like he was memorizing me.
“Lyla,” he said softly, “I thought I lost you last night.”
My chest tightened. “I thought I lost you.”
He took a step forward, close enough that I could feel his body heat. “Do you know what it does to an Alpha to see the person they… care for… risking everything in the middle of war?”
I swallowed. “Rowan…”
“My wolf went feral.”
His hand gently touched my wrist.
“I went feral.”
Something warm curled in my stomach.
“Why?” I whispered.
His thumb traced slow circles against my skin. “Because when I thought Damon would reach you first… I realized something that terrified me.”
I looked up at him. His breathing hitched—just slightly.
“What did you realize?” I asked, voice small.
He exhaled shakily. “That I would burn the world to keep you safe.”
My heart stuttered.
His hand slid up from my wrist to my cheek, cupping it gently. “I’ve been fighting something inside me since the day you stepped into my pack. Fighting because I was afraid of what it meant.”
I leaned into his touch without meaning to.
“Rowan…”
He shook his head slowly, eyes never leaving mine. “I can’t fight it anymore.”
My pulse raced. My breath caught.
The wind stilled. The forest hushed.
I couldn’t move.
He whispered, voice barely audible—
“I love you.”
Everything inside me broke open.
My chest filled with heat, emotion, disbelief, relief, longing all at once.
Tears blurred my vision. “Rowan… I..."
Before I could finish, a sudden warmth unfurled through me. A silvery light shimmered around us, soft and gentle.
A breeze swept through the trees, circling us, glowing like silver dust in the air.
Rowan’s eyes widened. “Lyla…”
I felt it then. A pull.
A sacred tie wrapping around my heart, threading into his.
The mate bond.
Not forced.
Not discovered by accident.
Not because fate demanded obedience.
But because fate had waited… until we were ready.
Rowan stepped closer, voice trembling.
“Are you feeling this too?”
I nodded, breath shaking. “Yes.”
He brushed his forehead against mine.
“Say it,” he whispered.
My lips parted.
“I love you, Rowan.”
He inhaled sharply, like he’d been starving for those words.
Then he kissed me.
The kiss wasn’t gentle.
It was desperate.
It was months of anger, longing, confusion, fear breaking all at once.
His hands slid to my waist, pulling me against him urgently, breath mingling with mine as our lips moved together. Not rushed, not clumsy, but deep and full of every emotion we had buried.
I gripped the front of his shirt, tugging him closer, and he groaned softly against my mouth, kissing me harder like he couldn’t get close enough.
His forehead pressed to mine between breaths.
“Lyla…” he whispered, voice rough, “I swear to you, I will love you for the rest of my life.”
My heart felt too full.
“And I will love you for the rest of mine,” I breathed.
The bond sealed between us in a pulse of warm silver light that wrapped around our chests and vanished softly into our skin.
We were mates.
Truly.
Fully.
Finally.
When we returned to the courtyard, Maya ran toward us.
She saw our joined hands.
Saw my glowing aura.
Saw Rowan’s soft smile.
And she grinned so wide it hurt my heart.
“You’re mates now!” she squealed.
Rowan laughed. “Our family,” he said softly, “is finally together.”
I leaned against him, Maya hugged between us, golden and silver light warming the air.
For the first time in my life…
I felt whole.
Safe.
Loved.
The pack watched from a distance as the sun rose higher, bathing us in light — their Alpha, their True Alpha, and the little sister fate returned at last.
And I knew, deep in my bones—
This wasn’t the end of my story.
It was the beginning of our forever.
The forest was quiet for the first time in months.
No screams.
No war drums.
No shadows hiding enemies.
Just the soft hum of night, the rustle of leaves, and the steady beat of my heart as Rowan’s fingers slipped between mine.
The battle with Kaiden, Damon, and Dalia had ended barely a week ago, yet it felt like a lifetime had passed. The scars on the packhouse walls were still visible. The scent of ash still lingered in the deeper halls. But the air… the air finally felt breathable.
Peace had a strange sound.
A beautiful one.
Behind us, Maya walked slowly along the stone path, fingertips brushing the lanterns Rowan had ordered hung for her return. She smiled at everything, the wolf pups chasing each other, the steam rising from the bakery chimney, the pack wolves bowing respectfully when she passed.
She smiled because she was finally safe.
Because she was finally home.
Rowan watched her with quiet pride. “She looks happy.”
“She is,” I whispered. “For the first time in years.”
“And you?” He turned to me, voice soft. “Are you happy?”
I blinked at him, taken off guard. “Rowan… you already know.”
But he stepped closer, lifting my chin with two fingers. “Say it anyway.”
The warmth in his eyes made my chest flutter. He looked at me like I was something sacred. Something chosen.
“I’m happy,” I breathed. “With you. With her. With all of this.”
Rowan exhaled like he’d been holding that answer for a long time.
I reached up and brushed a thumb over a faint scar on his jaw one he’d gotten protecting me. “The war is truly over now.”
“Not quite,” he murmured.
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
He smiled slow, teasing, infuriating. “There’s still one last thing.”
Before I could speak, he gently tugged me into his arms.
Not roughly.
Not urgently.
Just… completely.
His forehead rested against mine. His breath warmed my lips.
“Lyla,” he whispered, voice raw, “I love you.”
My heart stopped. Then started again; louder, stronger, freer.
“I tried to deny it,” he continued softly. “I tried to push it away… for Damon… for the pack… for myself. But I can’t anymore. I love you. I always have.”
The bond that invisible, ancient bond pulsed between us like a silver thread pulling tight.
“Rowan…” I whispered, breath trembling. “I love you too.”
The confession cracked something open inside me, something tender and fierce all at once. He inhaled sharply, closing his eyes as if the words healed him.
Our lips brushed, soft as a promise.
Then he kissed me gently.
His hands slid to my waist, pulling me closer until the world melted away. My fingers tangled in his hair as he kissed me again, more breathless this time, like he’d waited a lifetime for this moment.
His breath mingled with mine.
Warm.
Steady.
Mine.
A single glow swept over us, soft silver light... the Moon Goddess’s blessing.
When we finally pulled apart, his forehead rested on mine again.
“I knew it,” he murmured, voice shaking with quiet joy. “I knew you were meant for me.”
The bond snapped fully into place not painful, but perfect.
A seal.
A truth.
Fated mates.
My breath caught. “Rowan… I feel it.”
“So do I.”
He cupped my face gently. “We were always going to end here.”
Tears stung my eyes. “Together?”
He smiled, brushing them away. “Forever.”
Behind us, Maya called softly, “Lyla? Rowan?”
We turned.
She stood at the gate, moonlight catching her hair. Her smile was small but real.
“Don’t stop on my account,” she teased.
I laughed, a sound I hadn’t heard from myself in a long time.
Rowan wrapped an arm around my waist and kissed my temple, lips warm on my skin. “Come on,” he murmured. “Your sister’s waiting.”
We walked together into the packhouse glowing with lantern light. Warriors bowed. Children waved. Mrs. Beans yelled something about burnt bread. Ella dragged Maya into a hug so tight I thought her ribs might crack.
Home.
I’d never truly understood the word until now.
Rowan leaned close, whispering, “Luna?”
I looked up. “Yes?”
“You’re ready.”
“For what?”
“Our future.”
And for once, I didn’t fear it. Because I wasn’t facing it alone.
I squeezed his hand.
“I am.”
His smile lit the night.
And just like that…
The story of war ended.
And the story of us began.
The night was warm, washed in silver light. The kind of night that felt blessed quiet, gentle, as though the Moon Goddess herself was hovering above the clouds, smiling.
The war was over.
The rogues defeated.
Damon gone.
Kaiden imprisoned.
Dalia stripped of every ounce of power she ever clung to.
And Maya… My sister… My heart…
She was finally here.
For the first time in years, the world didn’t feel like it was waiting to break me.
I sat on the balcony outside Rowan’s newly repaired office, my legs tucked under me as I watched the forest sway. The scent of pine drifted on the breeze. Down below, pack pups ran across the courtyard, laughing. Elder wolves argued cheerfully about who contributed most during the battle.
Everyone was healing.
“Lyla?”
I turned.
Maya stepped onto the balcony, wrapped in one of my oversized wool cloaks. Her dark hair curled chaotically around her face, and her cheeks were flushed with life.
“How are you feeling?” I asked softly.
She smiled tiredly but real. “Stronger every hour. I didn’t think strength could return this fast.”
“That’s because this is home,” I whispered, blinking back tears. “You’re safe here.”
She reached out and took my hand. “Because you’re safe here.”
I squeezed her fingers. She squeezed back.
The kind of squeeze that said more than words possibly could.
We stayed like that for a moment, breathing in peace we never thought we’d feel again.
Then Maya nudged me, eyes narrowing slightly. “So. When were you planning to tell me?”
I blinked. “Tell you what?”
She raised an eyebrow. “Lyla. Please. I’m your older sister, not a rock. I can feel it from across the courtyard. The way he looks at you.”
Heat washed up my neck. I hid my face behind my hands.
“Oh my Goddess, stop—”
“I won’t stop,” she teased. “Because you’re in love.”
I groaned into my palms. “Maybe.”
“Maybe?” She laughed. “The way Rowan almost killed Damon the second he looked at you... please. That man loves you with his soul.”
My heart fluttered so violently I had to exhale before it burst.
“He hasn’t said anything,” I muttered.
“He doesn’t need to,” she replied softly. “Your face says everything.”
Before I could respond, footsteps approached behind us.
My breath caught automatically.
I didn’t even have to turn to know it was him.
He stepped onto the balcony, dressed in a simple black shirt and loose pants, hair slightly damp from training. His scent hit me pine, cedar, warmth and my entire body reacted before my mind caught up.
His eyes scanned my face first like he always did before shifting to Maya.
“How are you feeling today?” he asked her gently.
Maya smiled. “Alive. That’s a good start.”
He nodded. “It’s more than enough. And it will keep getting better.”
Then Rowan looked at me.
Looked into me.
And everything inside me settled.
“Lyla,” he said quietly, extending his hand. “Can I steal you for a moment?”
Maya arched her brow at me, smirking like a menace. “Well? Don’t keep your Alpha waiting.”
I hit her arm lightly as I walked past. “Stop it.”
She whispered loudly, “HE LOVES YOU!”
“MAYA!”
But she only laughed.
Rowan led me down the steps, through the quiet garden, and to the moonlit clearing near the old oak tree where we shared our first accidental, breathless, too-long stare.
The place felt… sacred now.
“Rowan?” I whispered. “Why did you bring me—”
He stopped suddenly.
And turned to face me fully.
My breath hitched.
His eyes…
They were soft in a way I’d never seen on another Alpha.
Warm.
Burning.
Unmasked.
“I brought you here,” he said slowly, “because this is where everything changed for me.”
Warmth spread down my spine. “Changed?”
He stepped closer, so close I felt the heat of his body.
“The night we fought Kaiden’s wolves,” he murmured, voice low, “the night I thought I’d lose you… the night you stood between me and death…”
He brushed his knuckles along my cheek.
“Something inside me woke up. Something ancient. Something that has been waiting only for you.”
I swallowed hard. “Rowan…”
He exhaled shakily. “I fought it. I tried to pretend. But when you healed me… when your aura touched mine… I knew.”
“Knew what?” My voice was barely a whisper.
His forehead lowered to mine.
“That you’re my mate, Lyla.”
My heart stopped.
My pulse exploded.
I grabbed his shirt to steady myself. “Your… mate?”
His breath shuddered against my lips. “Fated. Chosen. Written into my bones before I took my first breath.”
My eyes watered instantly but unlike other tears in my life… These were warm.
His hands cupped my waist, sliding up my back, pulling me in until our bodies fit together like puzzle pieces that had waited centuries.
His breath caught. His thumb brushed my lower lip. My heart was trembling so hard I couldn’t speak.
Then...
“Lyla.”
“Yes?”
“Can I kiss you?”
My laugh broke into a gasp. “Please.”
He kissed me.
Not tentative.
Not unsure.
But deep, warm, earth-shaking.
His hands slid into my hair. Mine curled into his shirt. He lifted me slightly, breathing into the kiss like he’d been starving for it. Our lips fit like destiny. Heat rushed through me, my aura flaring, his wolf rumbling through the bond as if finally home.
When we finally pulled apart, trembling, breathless, foreheads pressed together, he whispered:
“I love you.”
I gasped softly. “I love you too.”
“The Goddess gave me everything,” he murmured. “But you… you are the part I’ll spend my life protecting.”
A tear slipped down my cheek.
He kissed it away.
Then he reached into his pocket.
My breath stopped.
“Before the battle,” he said softly, “I had this made.”
He opened the small velvet box.
My knees nearly gave out.
A ring of silver, moon-forged set with a tear-shaped crystal glowing soft gold, like condensed sunlight.
“Rowan…” I breathed.
“I wasn’t planning to give this yet,” he whispered, “but after everything… after nearly losing you twice… I need you to know.”
He held the ring up between us. Moonlight kissed its surface.
“This is a promise,” he said softly.
“If you say yes… when you’re ready… when Maya is settled… when you feel whole again.”
I swallowed thickly. “Yes..."
He smiled.
“Wait,” I said quickly. “Maya. She... she needs to be part of this. She’s the older sister, after all.”
Rowan chuckled softly. “I already told her.”
I froze. “You WHAT?”
He smirked. “She told me if I hurt you, she’d kill me. Twice.”
I burst into laughter, covering my face.
“That sounds like her,” I groaned.
He brushed my hair back. “She approves, Lyla. She said she’s waited years to see you smile like this.”
I melted.
Absolutely melted.
Rowan slid the ring onto my finger.
It fit perfectly.
My aura flared gold. His wolf brushed my spirit gently through the bond. When he pulled me into his arms, the world fell perfectly silent.
I felt safe.
Loved.
Whole.
Finally home.
