Chapter 73 The Woman Who Turned the Game

Chapter 73 The Woman Who Turned the Game
Fitch let out a dry laugh, staring at me like I was some kind of idiot.
“Why would Elvira want to keep another woman’s child?” he asked.

“Because I can’t have children of my own.”
Elvira’s voice came from the doorway.
That woman sure knew how to make an entrance.

When I left the police station, I called her. Fitch was stubborn. If I wanted to drag him down, I could. I had enough power for that.
But doing it would also hurt me badly. Besides, what he had should’ve been mine anyway. If I destroyed him, I’d only be cutting my own assets.
So I turned to Elvira. After all, she was the one who first offered to work with me.

She agreed right away. Said she wasn’t doing it for me, but for Ashley and Matthew.
I didn’t care why. I only cared that she was helping.

Fitch’s face froze after hearing her words. He looked stunned, like he couldn’t believe what he just heard.
Elvira walked straight over to Ashley and bent down to play with Matthew.

“Oh, poor thing, look at those red cheeks.” She pinched his face gently.
I felt a flash of irritation like someone had just stepped into my territory. I shot her a sharp glare.

She rolled her eyes at me, completely ignoring the warning.
That damn woman. Arrogant as hell. If I didn’t need her, I’d have shot her right then.

“Elvira, what do you mean by that?” Fitch demanded.

“I was born without a uterus. I can’t have kids,” she said it so calmly.
I was a little shocked. She went that far to back me up? If the truth got out, she’d never land another family alliance after breaking off with the Adams.

“Really?” Isabel asked.

“Of course. It’s not like lying about this would benefit me.”
Elvira spoke with such confidence that Fitch and Isabel had no choice but to believe her.

“The Garcias never mentioned this! They hid it on purpose. That shows they’re not serious about this alliance!” Fitch slammed his hand on the table.

“But the Adams never said Julio already had a two-year-old son. We both hid things. So we’re even.”
For a moment, I almost admired her. She spoke without hesitation, with zero guilt.

“When we arranged the engagement, we didn’t know about Matthew,” Fitch tried to reason.

“That’s just your version. Nobody really knows the truth.”

“What nonsense is that? The Adams have always valued honesty! Did your father teach you to be this rude?”

Elvira shrugged, looking innocent.
“I’m just telling the truth, Uncle. Or is the Adams family allergic to honesty? Besides, I’m not married to Julio yet.”

Her message was clear since she wasn’t married to me, Fitch’s words meant nothing to her.
His face turned red, but he didn’t dare say another word. He still needed the Garcia alliance.

I didn’t like Elvira, but seeing Fitch lose control because of her was satisfying.

“Elvira, what are your plans then?” Isabel asked, stepping in for Fitch.

“I’ll treat Matthew like my own. You don’t have to worry about his safety. But I don’t want to take him from his mother. I don’t like taking care of kids. He’s still small, he should stay with her.”

Fitch looked like he was about to explode. After everything he’d done, it all came back to nothing.
But I stood firm. So did Elvira. He was just a clown trying to fight a storm.

Ashley’s POV

When I walked out of Fitch’s villa, it still felt unreal. I never expected Elvira to show up—and to help me and Matthew.

“Ashley, I told you I’d help,” Elvira said, raising an eyebrow at me.

“Why are you helping me?” I couldn’t stop myself from asking.
We had only met twice. We weren’t even friends. She had no reason to help.

Elvira pulled me toward Julio’s car. Julio frowned and tried to kick her out.

“This is my car. I’m sitting with Ashley.”

Elvira slammed the door shut. “I just did you a favor and you won’t even give me a ride? Do you have no gratitude at all? Besides, I want to talk to Ashley. What are you doing here? Go find another car. I’m sure the Adams have plenty.”

I couldn’t help laughing. She was fearless even in front of Julio’s murderous glare.
I ignored Julio too, but that was different. I hated him. I didn’t care what he thought.

Julio fumed outside for a full minute, then realized he couldn’t win. He finally got in the front seat, sulking.

“If Matthew went back to the Adams, they’d force me to marry Julio right away. Otherwise, his identity would be a problem. But look at him who would marry that lunatic?”

“I don’t want to marry a rude woman either!” Julio shot back.

“You think I’m rude? That’s just your opinion. But everyone agrees you’re insane.”

Julio almost jumped out of his seat. He turned around and glared at her, but Elvira ignored him, playing with Matthew instead.
I learned something from her right then——ignore Julio, and you win.

“And Matthew’s so adorable. If he had to leave his mom this young, he’d be such a poor little thing.”

“Thank you,” Matthew said softly.
He was still a kid, but he knew Elvira had helped us.

“Matthew, you’re thanking her? All of this was my plan!” Julio complained.
Elvira and I exchanged a look. We both had the same thought Julio was just a spoiled child who wanted everything his way.

“And besides, I owe Julio for dealing with Warner. That guy chased me since college, only because of my family. He was annoying as hell. Julio’s brutal, but at least Warner won’t bother me again.”

I hadn’t realized Julio’s actions had actually helped her too.

Julio planned to drop Elvira off first, but she said she wanted to talk more with me. So the three of us drove to my place in San Fernando.

James had been waiting at home. When he saw Julio’s car, he ran out immediately.
Seeing me and Matthew safe, he finally relaxed.

“Ashley, thank God you’re okay!”

“It’s over. Everything’s fine now,” I said.

“I’m the one who helped!” Elvira jumped in quickly.
James turned to her, and she gave him a bright smile.

“Hey, handsome. We meet again.”
