Chapter 20
Chapter 20
The night was thick with tension, each shadow seeming to hold a secret, a threat. Vexx and I moved through the city’s underbelly, silent as predators, senses sharp.
“There’s something different this time,” he murmured. “The enemy is watching, waiting.”
I nodded, voice barely above a whisper. “We need to find their weakness.”
My song was a soft murmur, weaving through the streets, a thread of light in the dark.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows, a woman cloaked in midnight, eyes glinting with secrets.
“Looking for me?” she said...
The real hunt had just begun. The woman stepped closer, her eyes never leaving mine, sharp, calculating, like she weighed every word before speaking.
“Name’s Selene,” she said, voice smooth as velvet but with an edge that made me shiver.
Vexx’s hand instinctively moved to his weapon. “What do you want?”
Selene smiled, cold, knowing. “To offer a deal. You want to take down Grell and his shadows, but you’re missing a piece.”
I narrowed my eyes. “And what piece would that be?”
She glanced over her shoulder, where shadows seemed to pulse and move unnaturally.
“The one thing even your song can’t touch, the puppet master pulling strings from the dark.”
Vexx growled low. “Why come to us?”
“Because even the strongest wolves need allies... and even sirens have secrets.”
The tension hung thick.
I realized that accepting her offer might be the key, or the trap. Selene’s eyes glittered in the dim light, sharp and unreadable.
“We don’t do favors for free,” I said, voice steady despite the knot twisting in my stomach.
She shrugged, a sly smile playing on her lips. “Nothing worth winning ever comes without a cost.”
Vexx’s gaze locked onto hers, tension crackling between them like electricity.
“What’s your price?” he demanded.
Selene leaned in, voice dropping to a whisper only I could hear.
“Your trust. And a secret I’ll only reveal if you swear loyalty.”
I exchanged a look with Vexx, uncertainty and determination swirling together.
“Fine,” I said finally. “But know this, we don’t tolerate betrayal.”
She nodded, eyes cold but respectful.
“As long as your song leads the way, I’ll follow.”
The pact was made.
But the shadows watched, and waited. The pact with Selene hung heavy in the air, a fragile thread weaving us closer to danger, and power. Vexx’s eyes never left hers, sharp and untrusting, but something unspoken passed between them.
“We move at dawn,” Selene said, voice like ice. “Grell’s puppet master is closer than you think.”
I clenched the black velvet choker, feeling its steady pulse, my link to Vexx, to the Choir, to everything I was becoming.
“This war is no longer just ours,” I whispered. “It’s a symphony, and every note counts.”
Outside, the city slept, unaware that its fate was being decided in whispered alliances and blood-stained promises.
The true battle was about to begin. The first light spilled over the city’s edge, painting the streets in pale gold and shadow. Vexx and I stood ready, the weight of Selene’s promise pressing down.
“Trust is a fragile thing,” Vexx murmured, eyes scanning every corner, every whisper.
“And Selene’s game is one I don’t fully understand.”
I nodded, voice firm despite the doubt curling inside me.
“But we don’t have a choice. We need her.”
The Choir gathered, their voices low but determined, ready to follow me into the unknown.
As we stepped into the breaking dawn, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the shadows we chased were watching, waiting for us to stumble.
And when we did...
They would strike.
We moved like ghosts through the crumbling streets, the city waking around us, unaware of the storm gathering beneath its feet.
Vexx’s grip was iron-tight on my wrist, every sense alert.
Selene led the way, her footsteps silent, eyes sharp for traps or traitors.
“The puppet master’s lair isn’t far,” she whispered.
My heart pounded as we approached an ancient, forgotten cathedral, its shattered stained glass casting eerie colors on the cracked stone.
Inside, the air was thick with dark magic and whispered secrets.
“This is where it ends,” Selene said.
I swallowed hard, voice steady.
“Then let’s make sure it does.” The shattered cathedral loomed ahead like a ghost from another time, its broken stained glass casting fractured rainbows onto cracked stone floors and crumbling pews. The air was thick, heavy with the scent of old blood, burnt incense, and something far darker that clawed at the edges of my skin. Every breath I took felt like swallowing shadows.
Vexx’s hand gripped my wrist firmly, grounding me even as my heart thundered in my chest like a trapped beast. His eyes were sharp, piercing the dim light, watching every shadow as if expecting it to spring to life and attack. Beside us, Selene moved with a feline grace, silent footsteps barely disturbing the dust, her gaze flickering like a blade scanning for hidden threats.
“We’re close,” Selene whispered, voice smooth but edged with steel. “The puppet master has turned this place into his throne of lies.”
I swallowed hard, clutching the black velvet choker that still pulsed against my skin, a reminder of the pact we’d made, the power we held together. The weight of everything, the betrayal by my brother, the darkness creeping through the city, the chains I had broken with my voice, pressed down on me. But there was no turning back now.
We stepped inside.
The cathedral’s grand archways stretched overhead, cracked and stained, the ceiling lost to time. Fragments of twisted statues stared down, their faces frozen in agony or silent warning. The floor was littered with shattered crosses and broken hymnals, scattered like the memories of a faith long abandoned.
“This is where it all began,” Selene said, voice dropping to a near whisper. “Where the siren blood was first cursed... and where it will end.”
Vexx’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t care about curses. I care about the man hiding behind them.”
A sudden chill swept the room, like a breath of death sliding through the cracks. The shadows flickered, twisting as if alive.
Then a voice, soft, mocking, dripping with menace, echoed through the hollow halls.
“Well, well... the little siren and her wolf have come to play.”
From the darkness stepped a figure, cloaked in black, face hidden beneath a hood. Grell had returned, but he was not alone.
Behind him, twisting shapes flickered, figures half-seen, their forms shifting like smoke and nightmare.
“The puppeteer,” Selene hissed, her voice a blade of warning.
Grell smiled cruelly. “You think I’m your only enemy? The real power is the one who pulls my strings. And tonight, you will see why.”
Vexx growled low in warning, muscles tensing to strike.
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of every note I had ever sung, every bond forged in blood and fire.
“This ends now,” I said, voice steady as steel.
The war was no longer just between us and Grell.
It was against a darkness far greater.
And as the cathedral walls seemed to close in, I knew the battle ahead would test everything we were.
Our blood.
Our trust.
Our very souls.
