Chapter 17

Chapter 17
The howl echoed through the cold night like a warning, and a challenge. Vexx’s grip tightened around my wrist as we moved deeper into the shadows of the city.

“The closer we get, the louder they’ll be,” he said, voice low and serious.

I swallowed my fear, feeling the weight of every eye on us, wolves, warlocks, shadows, all waiting for the first sign of weakness.

I took a breath and lifted my voice, a soft, haunting melody that sliced through the night air, trembling with power.

The Choir’s voices joined mine, rising like a wave of sound that wrapped around us, pulling the darkness back, drawing out our enemy.

For a moment, the city seemed to hold its breath.

Then, from the shadows, movement, fast, fluid, deadly.

Grell’s forces were closing in.

And the real hunt had begun. The night thickened around us like a living thing, swallowing the streets whole. Vexx’s jaw clenched, eyes sharp as a wolf’s.

“They’re coming,” he growled, his voice barely a whisper.

The Choir tightened their circle, veils pulled low, voices ready to strike.

I felt the pulse of my own heartbeat against the silence, a drumbeat counting down to the fight.

Suddenly, shadows burst from the alleyways, Grell’s twisted soldiers, faces hidden beneath dark masks, weapons glinting under the moonlight.

Vexx moved like lightning, fists and claws tearing through the first wave, his growls a brutal symphony of power.

I sang, my voice a blade of sound, cutting through the chaos, shattering bones, breaking spells.

The battle was fierce, raw, and close, every second a fight for breath and blood.

But as the last of Grell’s soldiers fell, I caught a glimpse of movement deeper in the darkness.

Grell.

Watching.

Waiting.

And this time, he wasn’t alone. The air tightened, thick with menace, as Grell stepped from the shadows like a living nightmare. His eyes burned red, wild and hungry, a predator stalking his prey.

Vexx growled low, shifting, muscles coiling for a fight. “You’re done, Grell.”

Grell laughed, a cold, bitter sound that sliced through the night. “You think this ends tonight?”

I stepped forward, voice steady despite the fire in my veins. “It ends when I say it does.”

He sneered. “The siren thinks she’s queen now.”

I didn’t flinch. “I am queen.”

With a roar, Grell lunged, dark magic sparking from his fingertips.

Vexx leapt between us, claws bared, teeth shining in the moonlight.

The battle erupted, steel and shadow clashing with thunderous force.

But I stood my ground, voice rising in a fierce, commanding song, weaving power into every note.

The night was ours to claim.

Or lose.

The night exploded around us, Vexx snarling, ripping through Grell’s dark spells like paper, while I stood firm, my voice slicing through the chaos like a sharpened blade.

Every note I sang carried the weight of every betrayal, every lost dream, every silent scream I’d buried deep inside.

Grell’s eyes flickered with fury, but with every chord, he stumbled back, his dark magic unraveling.

Vexx lunged, teeth flashing, but suddenly Grell vanished in a swirl of black smoke.

The silence that followed was deafening.

I looked at Vexx, breath ragged.

“This isn’t over,” he warned.

“No,” I whispered, “but maybe... this silence is our chance.” The silence stretched between us like a fragile thread, trembling under the weight of what had just happened.

Vexx exhaled slowly, eyes scanning the shadows as if expecting Grell to reappear from thin air.

“We bought ourselves time,” he said, voice low but firm. “But he won’t stop.”

I nodded, running my fingers along the edge of the black velvet choker, the symbol of the pact we’d made, and the promise of the fight ahead.

“Then we use this time,” I said, “to prepare.”

The Choir gathered around, their faces set with determination, their voices ready to rise again.

Outside, the city slept uneasily, unaware that the war for its soul had only just begun. The days blurred together as Vexx and I plunged into training, me with my voice, him with his weapons and pack.

The underground vault became our battlefield and sanctuary.

“Control, Kessia,” Vexx insisted, his eyes sharp as knives. “Your voice isn’t just power. It’s a weapon, a shield. You have to master it.”

I nodded, sweat dripping down my forehead as I pushed my limits.

The Choir watched, their harmonies weaving around me like a living force.

But with every practice, I felt the shadows lurking, Grell’s reach stretching farther than I’d imagined.

One evening, after a grueling session, Vexx caught my hand.

“You’re ready,” he said simply.

I looked at him, unsure.

“Trust me.” The city’s heartbeat quickened as night fell, dark streets alive with whispers and secrets.

Vexx stood beside me in the war room, eyes sharp, every muscle coiled like a wolf ready to pounce.

“We’ve trained,” he said, voice low. “Now it’s time to test.”

I swallowed hard, the weight of my voice heavy in my chest.

Outside, Grell’s forces moved silently, shadows slipping through alleyways, hunting for weakness.

But I wasn’t scared.

Not anymore.

I stepped to the window, fingers tightening on the black velvet choker, the mark of our bond.

Then I began to sing.

A low, haunting melody that wound through the city’s veins.

It was a warning.

A promise.

The first strike in a war that would drown the city in blood and song.
