Chapter 89 Controlling Lila's Things
Lila wanted Alexander to come to the hospital room alone so she could tell him what she knew. If he brought Catherine along, what could she possibly say?
She looked at Annie imperiously and ordered: "Go tell Catherine I won't allow her to come see me. I want to talk to Alexander alone."
Annie's mouth twitched.
She couldn't help but feel that Lila didn't seem to like Catherine very much.
Instead, the way she looked at Esme beside her was particularly gentle - anyone who didn't know better would think Esme was Lila's biological granddaughter.
"I can't make that decision. I'll pass your message to Mr. Howard."
Lila impatiently interrupted Annie.
"Stop with the useless talk. As Alexander's assistant, if you can't even handle such a small matter, you're completely useless."
Annie maintained a polite and professional smile.
"I believe my work performance should be judged by Mr. Howard."
"Fine, you can leave now."
Lila got a headache just looking at Annie.
After Annie left, she earnestly pulled Esme close. "Esme, when you marry Alexander, you must get rid of all these women around him. They give me a headache just looking at them - definitely not good people."
"Grandma, I know."
Seeing how obedient and sweet Esme looked, Lila smiled with satisfaction.
Esme was indeed her most sensible granddaughter - the others were all beneath notice.
Esme carefully observed Lila's expression, then took out a Vitality Pill from her pocket and gave it to Lila.
Lila had been taking Vitality Pills for years and couldn't do without them. As soon as the pill entered her mouth, her furrowed brow relaxed considerably.
"Grandma, I'm your only granddaughter. Only if I marry Alexander will you have a good life in the future."
"You must listen to me and take my side."
As Lila grew drowsy, she listened to Esme's voice, which gradually replaced all other thoughts in her mind, as if some memories were being altered.
"Okay, I know, I know everything."
Seeing Lila's state, Esme quietly took out Lila's phone and transferred money to herself, then removed the gemstone bracelet from Lila's wrist and put it in her own pocket.
"Grandma, you must remember - your money and jewelry were taken by Catherine. She's always eyeing your things. She's a bad person."
Hearing this, Lila immediately repeated: "Thief! She's a thief! Bad!"
After finishing all this, Esme got up and tucked Lila in, watching her fall into a deep sleep.
Vitality Pills really were wonderful things.
It was just a shame that Felix and Marcus hadn't been able to take them. She didn't have many Vitality Pills left. If she wanted to keep Lila doting on her and listening to her, she'd need to buy more.
Half an hour later, Alexander walked to Lila's hospital room with Catherine.
Annie had been waiting at the door. "Mr. Howard, Ms. Windsor, Lila just woke up, but she said she wants to see Mr. Howard alone."
This was Lila's request - Annie was just passing on the message.
Though she did think Lila seemed rather strange, and it didn't look like Lila genuinely cared about Catherine and Alexander's marriage...
Catherine understood - it was normal for Lila not to want to see her.
"I'll go see my grandfather first."
A flash of surprise crossed Alexander's eyes. Did Catherine and Lila not get along?
He had assumed that everyone in the Windsor family would treasure Catherine like her brothers did. If there were any Windsor family members who treated her badly, he wouldn't mind giving her more family members who would cherish her.
The Howard family might suit her well.
"Okay, I'll just say hello to your grandmother and then come find you."
Alexander pushed open the door and looked up to see a dozen caregivers and a gaudily dressed Esme standing in the room.
As soon as Lila saw him, she shivered from his cold, imposing aura!
Alexander truly lived up to his reputation - just looking at him radiated the presence of someone in power. If Esme successfully married him, she would definitely have a good life.
"Mrs. Windsor, hello."
"Hello, Alexander, come closer to me."
Lila enthusiastically beckoned to Alexander, wanting him to stand next to Esme.
Esme also looked at Alexander with a shy, excited expression, saying coyly: "Alexander, long time no see."
Seeing this setup, Alexander's eyelid twitched. His dissatisfaction at not being able to have Catherine by his side turned into hostility, and whatever slight warmth had been on his face disappeared, replaced by an icy demeanor.
"That won't be necessary. Just say what you need to say."
Seeing his indifference, Lila coughed awkwardly.
For some reason, she now had only one thought in her mind.
Such a good man could only belong to Esme.
"Alexander, I'll be straight with you - Catherine isn't right for you. You should break off the engagement with her immediately."
"You don't know this, but she took thirty million dollars from me. It's not like the Windsor family couldn't spare her that pocket money! Not to mention she took my jewelry too!"
"I bet she's mixed up with some shady people outside, which is why she needs so much money."
"Her adoptive parents said Catherine has poor character and is absolutely unsuitable to be your wife."
Lila pulled Esme closer and pushed her toward Alexander.
"Esme is the one who's perfect for you!"
Esme's face was full of shyness and excitement!
As long as Alexander was willing, she could go register their marriage with him right now!
Just thinking about becoming Alexander's wife soon, Esme was thrilled to death.
Alexander's expression grew darker and darker.
His face showed barely contained displeasure as he looked at Lila lying in the hospital bed.
"Mrs. Windsor, I came here because you're Catherine's grandmother, not to hear you slander her."
Lila became anxious.
How could Alexander not believe her!
She was telling the complete truth!
Surely the Smith family, who had raised Catherine for nineteen years, wouldn't lie? They were the ones who knew Catherine best. Alexander must have been deceived by Catherine!
"I'm telling the truth - Catherine has deceived you! Alexander, only being with Esme benefits both the Howard family and the Windsor family. Catherine doesn't deserve to marry you at all! Who knows how wild she's been outside."
Alexander's brow furrowed.
How could Catherine's own grandmother use such degrading words to describe her?
"Mrs. Windsor, please watch your language! I know better than you what Catherine is like."
Seeing Alexander about to leave, Lila feared she wouldn't achieve her goal. She clutched her chest and lay back down.
"My heart hurts so much! Am I about to die! Esme, if I die, you must protect yourself!"
"Grandma, don't scare me!"
Esme looked at Alexander tearfully. "Mr. Howard, please, don't upset my grandmother."
