Chapter 200: Want to Die? Your Life Was Saved by Me!
Seeing the person lying on the hospital bed, Catherine frowned too.
The moment Gavin saw Catherine, it was like seeing hope!
This patient's condition was very serious, but he had read Catherine's paper before - research done on exactly these symptoms.
Catherine glanced at Alexander and placed the bread George had handed over into Alexander's hands.
"Wait for me a moment."
"Okay."
Alexander knew she would definitely get involved, a faint smile on his lips.
Catherine followed Gavin, changed into surgical scrubs, and entered the emergency room.
"Take a look. His preliminary diagnosis should be aortic dissection. There's a tear in the inner wall of the aorta, and it's Type A. The patient has already lost consciousness. Massive bleeding from the aortic dissection - we didn't even dare do CPR on the way here."
"We need to operate immediately. Even if I do the surgery, the success rate is only thirty percent!"
Catherine nodded, understanding the patient's situation. She looked up at Gavin, her tone serious.
"I'll do it. You sign off on it."
Gavin gritted his teeth, knowing he had no time to hesitate, and quickly gave up his position to Catherine.
"Anesthesia, prepare for surgery!"
Seeing the hesitant looks from the surrounding doctors, Gavin said firmly, "I'll take responsibility! Give Catherine your full cooperation!"
With Gavin's word, and given the patient's critical condition, the emergency room quickly became busy.
Two hours later.
The assistant physician carefully wiped the sweat from Catherine's forehead, amazed at how steady her hands were!
No wonder Gavin insisted she do the surgery - this level of skill was rare even among senior surgical specialists!
Catherine breathed a sigh of relief. "The surgery was successful, but we need to monitor carefully. There's a high chance of complications like kidney failure."
"Don't worry, I'll notify the patient's family."
Catherine nodded and walked out with Gavin, changing out of her surgical scrubs.
"Where'd you pick up this patient?"
Gavin wasn't an ER doctor - running into a patient in such critical condition was quite unusual.
Gavin gave a bitter laugh. "This is Owen's grandson. Just got back to the country and collapsed at the airport. I happened to be coming back from a conference and ran into him at the airport."
Talk about luck - how else would he have run into Catherine right then?
"Are you here at the hospital to see George?"
"No. There was a fire at The Hughes Manor. Emilia got burned and was brought in for emergency treatment."
Gavin didn't know what to say for a moment!
"Don't tell George about this. I don't want him to worry. Anyway, you're the one who signed off, it has nothing to do with me. If the patient has any complications later, come find me."
Catherine was confident there were no problems with her surgery. As long as he was properly monitored, the patient should pull through.
Gavin gave a bitter laugh. He knew Catherine hated trouble!
While washing his hands, he snorted. "Fine, I'll take it. You know, saving an aortic dissection patient means I'll be at the hospital's awards ceremony for the next several years! If you don't want the credit, fine - I'll take it!"
"It's yours. I don't want it."
Catherine didn't care about any of that stuff.
Coming out of the operating room, Alexander was discussing the Hughes family matters with Annie beside him.
Seeing Catherine, Annie quickly came over.
"Boss! News of the Hughes family bankruptcy will be out tomorrow, but we still don't know how many survived the fire. We caught the arsonist - he's from Blade of Dusk."
Catherine raised an eyebrow. "Blade of Dusk?"
"He's one of Emilia's mother's people, helped Emilia set the fire. All the gasoline at the Hughes family estate was brought in by Blade of Dusk. He said he didn't know Emilia didn't want to live either."
"Once he found out Emilia was taken to the hospital, he took full responsibility. He's been taken away."
The emergency room light finally went out, and George came out looking exhausted.
"She'll live, but Emilia didn't want to. The burns and smoke inhalation aren't too serious, and her airway isn't burned."
Emilia's biggest problem was that she had no will to live.
She wanted to die together with everyone in the Hughes family!
George muttered, "Why would she want to kill herself out of the blue? Catherine, you guys should head home. Leave this to me. I can definitely save Emilia."
"Okay. Will the burns leave scars?"
George answered honestly, "Not on her face. Maybe on her legs, but luckily the area isn't large. She can get a tattoo to cover it later."
Catherine looked at George for a moment.
She didn't know George was the kind of thoughtful doctor who even planned ahead for how patients should handle their scars.
"We'll head out then. When she wakes up, have her contact me. I ordered food for you - it's in your office. Don't eat the bread."
Catherine waved the bread in her hand and left the hospital with Alexander.
Hearing that Catherine had even bought him food, George was absolutely delighted!
Soon a video appeared in the Windsor family group chat with George showing off in various ways.
"Whose loving late-night snack is this? Oh, it's from Catherine!"
Charles: "Why would Catherine be at the hospital so late?"
Richard: "Didn't Catherine say she was with Alexander? Why'd they go to the hospital? Did Alexander bully her?"
George quickly explained, and everyone felt relieved.
Juniper clicked through her photo album and sent all her saved pictures to the group.
"Who arranges all these meals for me every day? It's Catherine worrying I'm not eating well in Tranquil County. She loves me!"
Philip: "You're not in Tranquil County anymore, so you don't need to eat."
"Who's jealous of me? I even sleep with Catherine. You guys can just be jealous~"
Juniper contentedly left the group chat and opened a private chat with George.
"George, since Emilia got burned, as her attending physician you should show more concern!"
George was confused. Why should he be concerned about Emilia specifically?
Wasn't he concerned about all his patients?
The next morning, Catherine came to the hospital with Juniper.
Emilia was already awake, her face looking haggard, having lost its usual glow.
"Catherine, thank you for saving me. Love you."
Catherine shook her head and handed Emilia a pillow so she could lean against it.
Catherine knew what Emilia cared about and didn't hide it from her.
"The Hughes family went bankrupt. Anthony and the Hughes family members are all in emergency care."
Emilia nodded. "That's pretty good news."
Juniper felt worried. "Emilia, now that the Hughes family is bankrupt, what are you going to do?"
Emilia smiled, her bandaged hand brushing through her hair.
"I hid a lot of money! The Hughes family bankruptcy didn't touch my money, so I hid a bunch of gold beforehand - a few hundred thousand dollars worth! Pretty smart, right?"
"But I never thought I'd survive."
Emilia looked at the photo album placed beside her, her eyes full of longing.
"I miss my mom, so much. I miss her every day. When I see Aurora calling to check if you've eaten and what you ate, I want to cry."
Emilia wiped her tears, her haggard face forcing a smile.
"I'm actually really weak. I was so scared Anthony would sell me to some old man for a good price. I was scared Maurice would kill me someday. I was scared I couldn't avenge my mom. I was terrified!"
So scared, yet so brave when it came to avenging her mother.
The hospital room door opened. George, with a cold expression, looked at Emilia whose eyes were red from crying, and spoke icily.
"I'm the one who saved your life, Emilia! You have no right to seek death!"
