Chapter 107: Blackmailing Clara
Oliver immediately climbed out of his hospital bed.
"Sir, that cemetery clearly belongs to our family. It's my mother's burial ground. All the neighbors around can testify to that!"
The police officer pulled out a property certificate. "That cemetery legally belongs to Martin. It's his private property, and you're suspected of illegally occupying someone else's property."
Oliver quickly grabbed the certificate from the officer's hand, only to discover that not just the cemetery, but the entire mountain belonged to Martin!
Oliver looked at Steven, who seemed equally stunned. "So you're saying you really didn't buy that land?"
Steven immediately cursed.
"Why would I have nothing better to do than mess with your family's cemetery?"
"Wait, then how did you suddenly show up at my mom's grave!"
"How should I know! Sir, I want to report this too. I was at my hometown, and the next thing I knew, I woke up in the Smith family's cemetery, buried in a coffin. I almost died!"
The police officer looked at Steven like he was an idiot.
"Our investigation shows you drove overnight to Osflow and went to Martin's cemetery."
Did Steven think the police were fools?
They had naturally investigated such a simple matter beforehand. The surveillance footage clearly showed Steven driving from his own family's cemetery to Osflow by himself.
Steven was completely stunned!
How could he have driven to Osflow himself? He didn't remember anything!
Oliver, upon hearing this, wanted to jump up and slap Steven twice.
"I knew it! You've been eyeing our family's land all along!"
Oliver's mind raced. "Sir, what evidence do you have that we trespassed?"
"There are two sets of ashes in the tomb. Testing shows they belong to your wife Celeste's grandparents. The surveillance around the cemetery also captured you entering and exiting the cemetery. Come with us."
Oliver was dumbfounded!
Not only were there patrol guards around the cemetery, but there were also surveillance cameras!
There were indeed ashes in the tomb, but shouldn't they have been his mother Elodie's?
How did they become Celeste's grandparents'?
Oliver suddenly remembered what Molly said about Celeste sending money to her parents every month.
When did they put their family's ashes in there? So that blessed place had been protecting the Brown family all along?
The more Oliver thought about it, the angrier he became!
"Fine, just fine. Sir, I'll go with you!"
Celeste and her parents were still at the police station. He needed to confront them face to face!
Seeing Oliver leave, Steven reluctantly got out of bed and followed the police.
Molly looked at Clara smugly, let out a cold laugh, and walked away pulling Lucas with her.
Seeing them all leave, Clara looked on with teary eyes, then bit her lip and wanted to follow.
A nurse grabbed her. "Ms. Smith, you haven't paid your medical bills yet. Come settle the payment!"
Medical bills?
She only had so much money on her. Oliver was stingy as always with everyone except himself, and the allowance he gave her was limited.
Clara reluctantly followed the nurse to the nurse's station and her eyes widened when she saw the medical bill!
"Why is it so much?"
"Oliver and Steven's medical expenses are all included - emergency treatment, ICU fees, plus private rooms and nursing care."
Why should she have to pay the Johnson family's medical bills?
Oliver and Steven had used the best of everything, totaling seventy to eighty thousand dollars. She didn't have that much money on her.
"I don't know this family. Why should I pay for them?"
The young nurse looked at Clara strangely. "That family said you're their daughter-in-law and you'd pay the medical bills."
So they left so quickly just to stick her with the bill!
The young nurse looked at Clara with disgust. "You're not trying to skip out on the medical bills, are you? Dressed all proper, but you're this kind of person. No wonder you don't get along with your husband's family."
Clara's face burned with pain as her thoughts were exposed!
She had no choice but to grit her teeth and pay the medical bills with her own money, her heart aching as if it were bleeding.
Meanwhile.
George leaned against the parking lot, dialing Philip's number.
"I've already sent them in. Oliver doesn't know that mountain happens to be a nature reserve. Plus, they illegally robbed a grave and damaged someone else's property. Keeping them locked up for a while shouldn't be a problem."
"Since when is that mountain a reserve?"
Philip shrugged. "I bought it a conservation designation a few days ago."
As a lawyer, he naturally used the most reliable method to get people locked up.
George looked at the report in his hand. "No need to keep them too long. They'll definitely get medical parole. Better to let them find their own doctors."
According to the medical records, both Oliver and Steven were terminally ill. With their current assets, just treating their illnesses would bankrupt them, let alone saving their lives.
Philip casually fiddled with a potted plant in front of him.
"Don't tell Catherine about this, so the Smith family won't bother her again."
"Don't worry, we'll keep it quiet. Charles definitely won't say anything either."
As the next generation leader of the Windsor Group, Charles was very shrewd.
He certainly wouldn't tell Catherine about this and upset her.
But on the other side, Catherine had just picked up her phone to answer Charles's call.
"Charles, what's up?"
"The cemetery matter is resolved. If the Smith family bothers you, just ignore them."
Catherine was a bit curious. Last time Charles mentioned leaving a surprise for Oliver at the cemetery - what was it?
Charles chuckled, letting out a pleased sound.
After hearing Charles's words, Catherine's mouth opened slightly in surprise.
"What? So you put Steven in the tomb, and the Smith family just happened to dig him out?"
Just imagining that scene made her feel horrified. Oliver was already timid - he'd probably have nightmares for a long time.
"Yes, and I also sent them two diagnostic reports. George and Philip thought we shouldn't tell you, but I think you have the right to know."
"They have terminal illnesses. I guess that's karma."
His voice was gentle. Catherine could imagine the warm smile on Charles's face.
"You're part of the Windsor family too. Catherine isn't a hothouse flower. As long as you ask, I'll tell you everything."
Even if Charles didn't say anything, Catherine's people could find out, but the feeling of being valued and respected by family still warmed Catherine's heart.
She hadn't expected Charles to consider even such small matters and care so much about her feelings!
"Okay, I understand. Thank you."
