Chapter 18 Chapter 18

Chapter 18 Chapter 18
I dive through the gate without thinking, terror overriding everything else.

My daughter is in the void. Nothing else matters.

The transition is violent. Reality tears apart around me, reforming into something wrong. The air tastes like metal and decay. Gravity pulls in multiple directions at once. And the darkness—it's alive, pressing against my skin like cold hands.

"MAYA!" I scream.

"I'm here, Mama!" Her voice comes from nearby.

I follow the sound and find her standing calmly in the void, completely unafraid. Silver light radiates from her small form, pushing back the darkness.

"Maya, what were you thinking?!" I grab her and pull her close.

"You needed help. So I came to help."

"You're five years old! You can't—"

"I'm a blood moon child," she interrupts with that eerie calm she sometimes gets. "The same as you. The void can't hurt me if I don't let it."

Nyx stumbles through the gate behind us, looking disoriented. "Where—oh goddess. We're actually in the void."

"And so is my daughter!" I snap. "How do we get her out?"

"We can't. Not until we complete our mission." Nyx looks around nervously. "The gate Maya modified will stay open for a limited time. But if we're not back before it closes..."

"Then we better work fast."

I try to send feelings of reassurance to Dante through our bond, but the connection is weak here. Strained. I can barely feel him.

He must be going insane with worry.

"Which way to the Void Lords?" I ask Nyx.

She points toward a concentration of darkness. "Their throne room is that direction. But Aria... there are things between us and them. Void creatures. Hundreds of them."

"Then we fight through."

"With a five-year-old?"

"I didn't ask her to come!" I snap. Then I take a breath. "But she's here now. We protect her and we finish this."

Maya tugs my hand. "Mama? The shadow kings know we're here."

"How do you know?"

"They're coming to greet us."

Sure enough, three massive shadow figures emerge from the darkness. The Void Lords. Except here in their home dimension, they're even more terrifying. Their forms shift and writhe, sometimes humanoid, sometimes utterly alien.

"YOU CAME," the largest one says. "WE ARE PLEASED. THOUGH YOU BROUGHT AN UNEXPECTED GIFT."

Its attention fixes on Maya.

"ANOTHER BLOOD MOON CHILD. SO YOUNG. SO PURE. SHE WILL MAKE A PERFECT VESSEL."

"You're not touching my daughter," I snarl, power flaring around me.

"YOU CANNOT STOP US HERE. THIS IS OUR DOMAIN. YOUR POWER IS NOTHING."

It reaches toward Maya with a tendril of shadow.

I blast it with everything I have. Violet light erupts from my hands, slamming into the Void Lord.

And this time, in their home dimension, my power actually connects.

The Void Lord recoils, its form flickering. "IMPOSSIBLE. MORTAL MAGIC SHOULD NOT WORK HERE."

"I'm not just mortal," I say, understanding flooding through me. "I'm a blood moon child. Born of the void and the light. I exist in both worlds."

The Moon Goddess's words echo in my memory: You're becoming something new.

She was right. I'm not just a werewolf with magic anymore. I'm something that bridges dimensions. Something that can hurt beings like the Void Lords.

"Nyx!" I shout. "Your power works here too! Help me!"

Nyx hesitates, fear warring with determination on her face. Then she raises her hands and black energy pours from her palms—not void corruption, but her natural blood moon magic channeled through her void knowledge.

Together, we attack the Void Lords.

The battle is unlike anything I've ever experienced. Reality itself becomes a weapon. The Void Lords tear open holes in space, summon creatures from nightmares, reshape the ground beneath our feet.

But we adapt. Maya's silver light protects us from the worst attacks. My violet power and Nyx's black energy work in tandem, finding weaknesses in the Lords' defenses.

"THE BRIGHT TWIN AND DARK TWIN FIGHT AS ONE," the smallest Void Lord observes. "THIS IS... UNEXPECTED."

"Lots of things are unexpected," I gasp, dodging a tendril of void energy. "Like you being mortal after all!"

"WE ARE NOT MORTAL. WE ARE ETERNAL."

"Everything dies eventually. Even gods." I gather my power for a massive attack. "Nyx! Maya! Together!"

The three of us—sisters by blood and battle—combine our powers. Silver, violet, and black energy merge into something new. Something that glows with impossible light.

We unleash it on the Void Lords.

The combined attack hits like a star going supernova. The Void Lords scream—actual, audible screams of pain.

Their forms start to disintegrate.

"NO! THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE! WE ARE INFINITE! WE ARE ETERNAL!"

"You're history," I say coldly.

The largest Void Lord makes one last desperate attempt. It lunges at Maya, trying to take her as a hostage.

But Maya doesn't flinch. She raises one small hand and silver light erupts from her palm, punching straight through the Void Lord's chest.

"You can't hurt my mama," she says simply. "And you can't hurt me. Because I'm stronger than you."

The Void Lord looks down at the hole in its chest with something like surprise. Then it collapses, dissolving into nothing.

The other two Void Lords try to flee, retreating deeper into the void.

"Oh no you don't!" Nyx charges after them, her power lashing out like whips.

I follow, leaving Maya protected by her shield of silver light.

We chase the Void Lords through their dimension, through spaces that hurt to look at, past things that shouldn't exist.

Finally, we corner them in what looks like their throne room—a vast chamber of darkness and twisted architecture.

"MERCY," the remaining Void Lords plead. "WE WILL LEAVE YOUR WORLD ALONE. NEVER RETURN. JUST LET US LIVE."

"You threatened my family," I say. "You tried to take my daughter. There's no mercy for that."

"WE WERE ONLY FOLLOWING OUR NATURE—"

"Then die according to your nature." I look at Nyx. "Ready?"

She nods. "Ready."

We attack together one final time. Our combined power overwhelms the Void Lords' defenses, rips through their forms, destroys them from the inside out.

When it's over, only silence remains.

The Void Lords are dead.

Actually, permanently, completely dead.

I stand there gasping, hardly believing we won.

"Is it over?" Nyx asks quietly.

"I think so. I can't sense any more of them."

"Then we should go. The void will try to fill the power vacuum they left. It won't be safe here much longer."

We run back to where Maya waits. She's fine, her silver shield still protecting her.

"Did you win?" she asks.

"We won, baby. Thanks to you." I scoop her up. "Now let's go home."

We race toward the gate. Already, I can feel it weakening. Maya's modification is fading.

Void creatures, sensing the Void Lords' deaths, swarm toward us. Hundreds of them, hungry and angry.

"Run faster!" Nyx shouts, blasting creatures out of our path.

The gate is just ahead. I can see through it to our world, can see Dante standing on the other side with his hand outstretched.

Our bond flares to life, stronger than before. He's pulling me toward him with everything he has.

We're almost there when one of the void creatures grabs Nyx's ankle.

She goes down hard.

"ARIA! GO! GET MAYA OUT!"

"I'm not leaving you!"

"You have to! Maya needs to be safe!" Nyx kicks at the creature. "GO!"

More creatures swarm her. She fights desperately but there are too many.

I make a split-second decision.

I throw Maya through the gate. "Dante! Catch her!"

Then I turn back for Nyx.

"What are you doing?!" she screams. "Save yourself!"

"Family doesn't give up on family!" I blast the creatures off her and haul her to her feet. "Move!"

We run together, creatures snapping at our heels. The gate is closing rapidly.

We're not going to make it.

Unless...

I remember what the Moon Goddess said: The soul bond is your anchor.

Dante can pull me through. But Nyx doesn't have a soul bond. Nothing to anchor her.

"Take my hand!" I shout at Nyx. "Don't let go!"

She grabs my hand and I reach for my bond with Dante, pulling on it with everything I have.

DANTE! PULL US OUT!

Through the bond, I feel him respond. Feel his strength combining with mine.

The bond becomes a rope, a lifeline, dragging us toward the gate even as it collapses.

We dive through just as it closes completely.

We land hard on the fortress courtyard ground. The gate seals behind us with a sound like reality snapping back into place.

For a moment, there's silence.

Then Maya tackles me. "MAMA! You came back!"

"I promised I'd try, didn't I?"

Dante pulls us both into his arms, shaking with relief. Through the bond, I feel his terror slowly fading into joy.

"Don't ever do that again," he whispers.

"No promises."

Around us, the fortress erupts in celebration. We did it. We killed the Void Lords. Saved our world.

But as I stand there holding my family, I notice something.

Nyx is on the ground, curled into herself, shaking.

I kneel beside her. "Nyx? What's wrong?"

She looks up and her eyes are black again. Pure void black.

"The void," she gasps. "It got in me. When the creatures grabbed me. I can feel it spreading."

"No! You renounced the darkness!"

"I know. But it doesn't care. It's reclaiming me." Tears stream down her face. "Aria, you need to lock me up. Before I hurt someone."

Elder Moira appears with Morgan and Iris. They examine Nyx quickly.

"The void corruption is spreading fast," Morgan confirms grimly. "We have maybe an hour before it takes her completely."

"Can you stop it?" I demand.

"We can slow it. Maybe contain it. But cure it?" Iris shakes her head. "I don't know if that's possible."

"Then we try anyway!" I grab Nyx's hand. "I'm not losing my sister. Not after everything."

"Aria..." Nyx's voice is already changing, becoming distorted. "If I turn... you have to kill me. Promise me."

"I'm not promising that!"

"Promise me!" Her grip on my hand tightens painfully. "I won't let myself become a monster again. I won't hurt your children. So promise me if I turn, you'll end it."

I look at Dante. At Maya. At Marcus, who Riley is holding protectively.

I think about what Nyx could do if the void takes her completely. The destruction. The death.

"I promise," I whisper. "If there's no other way... I'll end it."

Nyx nods, relieved. "Thank you."

They take her to a specially prepared cell deep underground, lined with every protective ward we know. Iris, Morgan, and Elder Moira work frantically to slow the corruption.

I stay with Nyx, holding her hand through the bars.

"Tell me about being a twin," she says weakly. "What was it like? Before I was taken away?"

"I don't remember. We were babies."

"Make something up then. Something nice."

So I do. I tell her stories about two baby girls under a blood moon, blessed by the goddess, destined for greatness. I tell her about a mother who loved both her daughters, who made an impossible choice to save them both.

I don't know if any of it's true. But it makes Nyx smile.

As the hours pass, the corruption spreads. Black veins appear under her skin. Her eyes remain void-black. Her voice becomes more distorted.

But she fights. Goddess, she fights so hard.

"I don't... want to... lose myself," she gasps. "Don't want to... forget you... sister..."

"You won't forget. I won't let you." I squeeze her hand tighter. "Fight, Nyx. Please fight."

Maya appears beside me, slipping past the guards. "Aunt Nyx is sad."

"Baby, you shouldn't be here—"

But Maya is already approaching the cell. She reaches through the bars and touches Nyx's corrupted hand.

Silver light flows from Maya into Nyx.

"Maya, no!" I try to pull her back, but the light is already working.

The black veins in Nyx's skin recede. Her eyes flicker from void-black to violet and back again.

"The darkness is scared of me," Maya says matter-of-factly. "So I'm telling it to go away."

"Maya, you're too young to fight void corruption—"

"I'm not fighting it. I'm just being bright." She smiles. "Daddy says darkness goes away when you turn on lights. So I'm being a light."

And incredibly, impossibly, it works.

The void corruption continues to recede. Nyx gasps as her body returns to normal. The black fades from her eyes completely.

When Maya finally lets go, Nyx is cured.

Completely, totally cured.

Elder Moira stares in shock. "That's... that's impossible. Void corruption doesn't just disappear."

"It does if you're bright enough," Maya says, yawning. "I'm tired now."

She falls asleep standing up. I catch her and hold her close, this miracle child who just saved her aunt.

"How?" Nyx whispers, looking at her hands in wonder. "How did she do that?"

"Because she's a blood moon child," I say softly. "The purest one born in generations. Her power isn't just destruction or protection. It's... hope. Pure hope."

"A five-year-old cured void corruption with hope." Nyx laughs weakly. "That's the most ridiculous and beautiful thing I've ever heard."

We release her from the cell. She's weak but recovering.

That night, we gather for a celebration. The Void Lords are dead. Nyx is saved. Our world is safe.

For now.

But as I watch my children sleep, as I feel Dante's arms around me, as I sense my sister's presence nearby, I can't shake a feeling of unease.

The Moon Goddess appears in my dreams again.

"You did well. Better than I expected."

"Is it over? Are we safe?"

"For now. But Aria... you killed the Void Lords. You've made enemies in places beyond my sight. Beyond any god's sight."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you've attracted attention from the spaces between dimensions. From things that exist in the gaps of reality." Her expression is grave. "The Void Lords were just gatekeepers. You've opened a door to something far worse."

"What's worse than Void Lords?"

"The Void itself. The empty nothingness between all things. And it's hungry."

"How do we fight nothingness?"

"You don't. You can only survive it. Maybe." She starts to fade. "Get ready, Aria. The real trial is just beginning."

I wake with a gasp, fear flooding through me.

The real trial is just beginning.

What could be worse than everything we've already faced?

I don't know.

But I'm about to find out.
