Nathan's Departure

Nathan's Departure
Adeline

Before Andrew or I could move, Nathan burst into the castle corridor, his expression a storm of emotion. The guards immediately moved to intercept him, their hands on their weapons, but I gently raised my hand.

"Let him come to me. He will not harm me."

Andrew stiffened beside me.

"Mother, he is angry. Are you sure we can trust him?"
"I will be fine, Andrew. Thank you for your concern."

Nathan halted a few steps in front of me, his eyes burning with intensity. His wife, Lady Amelia, stood nervously behind him, her fingers twisting together. Nathan bowed deeply, and Lady Amelia followed with a graceful curtsey.

"Your Majesty, I seek an audience with you.”
"I will grant you your audience. We will talk in private."

I signaled for Andrew, Nathan, and Lady Amelia to follow me, and led them swiftly to my private study. It was a more intimate and less ostentatious room compared to Alexander's grand chamber. Once inside, I took my seat behind the desk, and Andrew positioned himself protectively behind my chair, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. Nathan and Amelia sat down across from me, the tension in the room thick and almost tangible.

"Nathan. What brings you here in such haste?"

Nathan took a moment to calm himself, his breaths deep and measured. Slowly, he unfurled his clenched fist, the tension in his posture easing slightly.

"Your Majesty I humbly ask what you have in store for my future."

I leaned back in my chair, considering his question. Truth be told, I had not yet decided what to do with Nathan. His parents were a threat, yes, but Nathan himself had done nothing wrong. Alexander's distrust of him still lingered in my mind, but I needed to make my judgment.

"What do you request for your future?" I asked, studying him closely.

Nathan exchanged a glance with Lady Amelia before replying.

"I humbly request that Amelia and I be allowed to return to my parents' estate across the sea. I request that we be allowed to resume my parents' work as the lord and lady of the island."

I took a moment to reflect upon his request, weighing the potential risks and benefits.

"I will grant you permission to return to our island across the sea. You will be named the Lord and Lady of your parents' estate. I expect a full report every month."

Nathan's shoulders relaxed visibly, but I was not finished.

"The rest of the prisoners who were charged will go along with you. I trust you will find proper work for them, and I request that they not return to our kingdom."

Nathan nodded, understanding the gravity of the responsibility I was placing on him.

"You may return to diplomacy, when necessary," I added, my tone firm but fair.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Nathan said, bowing his head in gratitude.
"You will depart on tonight's ship," I concluded, signaling the end of our audience.

Nathan bowed deeply and walked out of the room, his steps lighter now that his future was settled. Once the door closed behind him, Andrew turned to me, his expression softening.

"Mother, you made a wise decision.”
"There has been enough bloodshed at my command. Your father would have shown mercy. Andrew, I have much to discuss with you. Please, sit down."

Andrew took a seat in front of my desk, his posture growing rigid. I could see the weight of responsibility already settling on his shoulders.

"The council has informed me that the kingdom is once again secure. You will be crowned king in two days."

Andrew's eyes widened slightly. I continued before he could respond.

"I will retire to my small estate with Charlotte and Christopher," I said, watching his reaction closely.
"Mother, this is your home," he protested with a hint of distress in his voice. "You do not need to leave."

I reached across the desk, taking his hand in mine.

"I will return when I am ready. Now, it is time for you to lead. This kingdom needs a strong and just ruler, and I know you will be that king."

Andrew squeezed my hand.

"I will make you proud, Mother.”
"You already have, my son.”

Andrew

I left my mother’s study, my thoughts a whirlwind. Making my way to our chambers, I found Isabel gazing out the window, lost in her thoughts. With a sigh, I scooped her up in my arms, finding solace in her presence. So much had changed since we married three days ago, and I needed her grounding influence more than ever.

"Andrew, what is distressing you?"
"My mother has informed me that the kingdom is secure.”
"Is that not a good thing, Andrew?"
"I am happy that the kingdom is secure," I said, setting her gently back down and pacing the room. "I am worried that I will not be able to take my father's place. My father was a wise king."

Isabel moved closer, her hand resting reassuringly on my arm.

"You will be a wonderful king, Andrew. You have your father's wisdom and your strength."
"My mother has decided to take Charlotte and Christopher to live with her at her estate," I continued, my voice tinged with sadness. "Nathan has requested to go back across the sea."
"Darling, I will still be here by your side. We will face this together."
"Thank you, sweetheart," I said, giving her a quick kiss. "I must beat Nathan to the docks. I will be back tonight."

Isabel nodded.

"Be safe, Andrew."

With one last look at my beloved wife, I turned and left our chambers. I arrived at the docks just as Nathan was about to step on board. He turned around, a questioning look on his face, his eyes reflecting the turmoil of the past few days.

"Nathan, I am sorry that things turned out this way. I was just beginning to think of you as my brother."

Nathan's expression softened slightly, but there was still a distance in his gaze.

"My parents made their decision, and I stand by mine. You will be a good king one day, Andrew. Perhaps one day I will return and be welcomed with open arms. For now, I must return to my home."

I nodded, feeling a pang of sorrow at the thought of his departure.

"Safe travels, Nathan."

He gave me a small, respectful bow before turning and boarding the ship. I watched as the vessel began to pull away from the dock, carrying Nathan and Lady Amelia across the sea to their new life. The weight of the crown and the future of the kingdom pressed heavily on my shoulders, but Nathan's parting words gave me a sliver of hope. I stayed on the dock long after the boat disappeared on the horizon, the gentle lapping of the waves a comforting rhythm against the turmoil in my heart. My mind wandered to memories of my father, who would regale me with tales of his travels. As a child, I dreamt of venturing beyond our small world, exploring lands unknown and seas uncharted. Now, all I yearned for was to hear him tell me one more story, to feel the warmth of his presence and the wisdom of his words.

With a heavy sigh, I turned away from the empty expanse of the sea and slowly made my way back to the castle. Each step felt weighty with the responsibility that lay ahead. I approached. I saw Isabel standing on the balcony, her silhouette framed by the soft glow of the setting sun. Quietly, I walked up to her and gently wrapped my arms around her waist. She leaned back into me, her warmth grounding me in the moment. Tomorrow would be a busy day, filled with preparations for my coronation as king. The weight of the crown felt daunting, but with Isabel by my side, I knew I could face the challenges ahead.

"Are you ready for tomorrow?"
"I am," I replied, pressing a kiss to her temple. "As long as you are with me, I am ready for anything."

We stood there together, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. In that moment, I felt a flicker of hope and determination. The path ahead was uncertain, but with love and courage, I knew we could forge a future worthy of my father's legacy.
