Maevryn’s POV
“Mae? What the hell did you do?” Brinley asked me.
How the hell did they already know?
I tried playing it off like, I haven't a clue what she was referring to.
“I'm not exactly sure what you mean?” I felt bad for lying to my new friend but there's no way they already knew?
Unless… was one of them a wolf? Did they already mind link the whole school?
Is that how fast words spread around here? Like a wildfire you can't tame the minute it starts?
Brinley hums in response.
“Well, let's see Maeve. Not to start off on the wrong foot, but one minute your scent is here the next it's gone. Untraceable again. You reek of magic and something I can't quite put a finger on. You have to remember all wolves can mindlink at this school… you do know that right?”
The twin's look at me with a look of hurt and confusion
If you pull a dissapering act like that again, you won't like what happens.
She paused taking in my reaction. I flinched ever so slightly.
Brinley reached out and lightly touched my arm, and her eyes flashed white. And as quick as the flash was she stumbled backwards away from me.
Kieran and Rowen exchange a look of confusion.
“They used magic on you?” she stammered as she tried to regain her balance.
“You can see what happened?” I looked at her with concern
There was no way she could've seen that right?
She continued slowly. “I didn't see the whole thing, I saw you on the ground, you were in their dorm. One of the head girls was walking around you, and you pushed away with magic? You stood up for yourself and you were radiating power. It was practically oozing out of you?!” she yelped and looked at me again this time with panic.
“Who did she all mind link to or whatever?” I asked, looking down, heat bubbling up.
The twins glanced at Brinley, then me.
“Pretty much the whole school.. But trust me not a lot of people like the witches or trust them. Especially Delilaih. She’s known to gossip a lot and start shit.” Brinley looked at the door than at me.
“You need to talk to Lucian. He already knows about what happened...” She opened the door and the twins followed behind me. Like two very tall, muscular body guards.
I felt their gaze sweep over me and could feel their stares boring into me. I'd never felt this kind of gaze before. Most guys looked at me like I was nothing more than a piece of gum stuck to their shoe. Or wouldn't even look at me.
We walked the halls in silence, the whispers had already started from students, pointing and looking away with fear. Like they'd be next. Some of the whispers hurt but, of course it wasn't even my first day and everyone knew me.. everyone at this school looked at me like I was some ticking time bomb ready to burst.
I know he's my dad, and the alpha, but Goddess he's got to be sick of me already.
The floorboards creaked under my feet as I stepped into Lucian’s office. The door shut behind me with a soft click, and the silence was louder than any scolding he could give.
He didn’t speak right away. Just looked at me. I mean really looked. Not as a headmaster or alpha, but as a father.
“I heard you protected yourself with magic.. I'm going to have to replace that door,” he said with a slight chuckle.
I looked down. My hands were still trembling. Not from fear. From the fire that still hadn’t left my body.
“I didn’t mean to,” I murmured. “She was being so vile, and I couldn't take her calling me weak and I just –”
“She deserved it,” he cut in. “But that doesn’t mean you can lose control.. You need to learn to control your outbursts otherwise -”
I blinked. “You’re not mad?”
“Oh, I’m furious,” he said, standing. “But not at you.”
He paced toward me slowly, hands clasped behind his back like he was trying to keep himself calm. “This power inside you — it’s not like others. The spirits, the shadows, even your wolf… they’re reacting to a magic older than any of us fully understand. You need training. You need outlets. Or next time, someone won’t walk away with just bruises.”
I interrupted him - “They spoke about being the chosen one?? That I’ll either save us or burn everything to the ground”
He stepped closer, voice quieter now. “You’re not dangerous, Maeve. But you’re full of rage. Of power. Of potential. And you’re not going to survive here unless you learn how to use it before it starts using you..”
“You need to train,” he said. “With the twins. With Brinley.”
My eyebrows lifted. “The growling duo who look like they are from a movie, and the girl who looks like a gust of wind could knock her down?”
Lucian’s mouth twitched. “They’re stronger than they look. And frankly, they’re the only ones I trust not to die when you snap.”
I blinked. “Comforting.”
“Go meet them in the west courtyard.. Make sure to get out as much rage and anger out.. We don't need another outburst tomorrow in class. Good luck by the way i'll see you after your first day kid”
He was acting weirder than normal. To be fair I hurled a girl through her closet but still.
I have a feeling this is only the beginning.
The sky was smoky with early dusk, and the courtyard echoed with the soft grunts and growls of sparring students. Brinley was already there, standing barefoot in the grass, her blonde hair in a braid that glowed under the last traces of sun. Kieran and Rowen flanked her — dark, tall, intimidating, like two carved shadows.
“You look like you either cried or burned something down.” Brinley said, walking toward me.
“Why not both?”
Rowen smirked. “She’s got fight in her. I like that.”
Kieran said nothing, just folded his arms and studied me with those sea blue eyes, a storm brewing in the,. They watched me like I might detonate at any second.
Brinley handed me a wooden staff. “Let’s start with focus drills. Channel your magic into this. Control it. Don’t hurl it.”
I narrowed my eyes. “What if I hurl you instead?”
She grinned. “Then I’ll hit you back.”
We spared. Wood clashed. Magic surged in the air between us like sparks on dry kindling. Every time Brinley ducked, I felt the thrum of power in my arms—every strike heavier, every breath sharper. Like my body knew how to do this. Like I had done this before.
Then it was Rowen’s turn. We shifted to hand-to-hand, and the growl in his chest as I landed a hit told me his wolf wasn’t used to being challenged.
Kieran stepped forward last.
His silence made the air tense.
“Try to hit me,” he said.
I blinked. “You’re not going to fight back?”
“I will,” he murmured.
