Chapter 20 The Ghost in the Fire

Chapter 20 The Ghost in the Fire
Elena's POV

The gunshot cracked the world in half.

Damian staggered, breath catching in his throat. The sound echoed off the metal walls, and for a moment, I couldn't tell if it was my heartbeat or the explosion still rumbling above us.

He dropped to one knee.

Blood spread across his shirt, a crimson bloom over the black fabric.

"No-no, no-Damian!"

I grabbed him, pulling him closer, hands trembling as they pressed against the wound. The air was thick with gunpowder, smoke, and the metallic tang of fear.

"Stay with me," I whispered.

He gritted his teeth. "It's not-bad-"

Another volley of bullets answered him, tearing through the debris. We ducked behind a collapsed beam, breathless. The red laser dots darted across the wall like vultures circling prey.

"They've got heat sensors," he muttered, voice fading. "They'll track movement. You have to go."

"Are you insane?" I hissed. "I'm not leaving you."

"Elena-"

"Don't Elena me. You dragged me into this fire; we're burning together or not at all."

His gaze locked on mine, fierce even through the pain. "You don't understand-"

"Then make me."

But before he could speak, a grenade rolled into view.

He reacted first. His arm went around me, pulling me tight as the explosion tore through the chamber. We were thrown backward - through a wall, into the dark.

For a moment, there was nothing. Just silence and ringing ears.

Then - a faint voice, distorted through static.
"Status confirmed. Damian Vale is down. Proceed with retrieval of the girl."
Retrieval.

Not elimination.

My blood ran cold.

"Damian," I whispered, shaking him. "They want me alive."

He opened his eyes - just barely. "Then they think they can use you."

"Use me for what?"

Before he could answer, figures appeared through the smoke - three of them, masked, dressed in tactical gear.

I reached for Damian's gun. Empty.

The leader's voice cut through the haze. "Elena Armond. You've caused us a great deal of trouble."

That voice-

My breath caught. "Ethan?"

The mask came off.

And my brother smiled.

Damian's POV

Pain had its own rhythm - sharp, fading, sharp again. But the moment I heard Ethan's voice, I forgot it entirely.

He looked almost casual, as if the fire and blood were just background noise.

"Still playing hero, Vale?" he said. "You were always bad at staying dead."

Elena's face went pale. "You-You shot him?"

Ethan tilted his head. "No. That was one of your men."

I frowned, forcing myself upright. "Still using my old tricks, I see."

He smirked. "You taught me well. Unfortunately for you, the student learned faster."

Elena's voice cracked. "Wait-taught you?"

Ethan's eyes glittered. "Didn't he tell you, sister? Before he betrayed the Syndicate, Vale was the one who trained me. He made me what I am."

My chest tightened. "That was years ago. Before I knew what the Syndicate really was."

Ethan's grin widened. "And before you knew who she was."

He turned to Elena. "Tell me, how does it feel knowing your mentor and your brother built the same monster?"

Elena stumbled back, shaking her head. "Brother?"

"Half-brother," he corrected softly. "Our father made sure I stayed in the shadows while you lived the pretty life in London. I guess that makes this family reunion long overdue."

The room went still. Smoke. Silence. Betrayal.

I saw the realization hit her - the truth carving through everything we'd built.

She looked at me with wide, trembling eyes. "You knew?"

I shook my head. "Elena, I swear to you- I didn't know until tonight."

Ethan's smirk deepened. "And yet you still trained me. Fate's got a dark sense of humor, doesn't it?"

Elena's POV

It felt like the world stopped spinning.

"You trained him?" I whispered.

Damian's silence was a blade between us.

"I-years ago, before I knew who he was-before I knew you were his sister," he stammered.

Ethan smiled. "He taught me everything I know. Including how to pull a trigger."

Something inside me cracked.

"You both lied," I said, voice breaking. "You used me."

"Elena-no. I tried to protect you."

"By building a war you can't even control?"

Before he could answer, Ethan lunged, wrenching the gun from my hand. The shot went off again, grazing Damian's arm. I screamed.

Ethan caught me by the hair, yanking me backward. "I warned you, Damian. Everything burns eventually."

He pressed the muzzle to my temple.

"Let her go!"

Damian took a step forward-

"Take another," Ethan hissed, "and she dies."

The room trembled again - a low rumble that wasn't fire this time. A deeper vibration. Machinery.

Ethan's comm clicked.
"Phase Three initiated. Building lockdown in sixty seconds."
His eyes lit with madness. "Guess the Syndicate's cleaning up loose ends."

"Even you?" I spat.

He smiled. "Especially me."

Then he shoved me toward Damian and bolted for the stairwell.

"Ethan!" I screamed, but the metal door slammed shut behind him.

Sirens wailed overhead. Red lights began pulsing.

Damian grabbed my hand, dragging me toward the emergency tunnel. "We need to move-now!"

We sprinted through smoke and rubble, the air thick and trembling. Behind us, the walls started collapsing.

"Damian-where does this lead?" I shouted over the alarms.

"Out, if we're lucky-"

The floor gave way beneath us.

We fell - straight into darkness.

Elena's POV (Later)

When I opened my eyes, everything was quiet. Dust floated through a shaft of dim light. My body ached.

"Damian?"

No answer.

I turned - and froze.

He was lying beside me, barely breathing, his shirt soaked in blood. But that wasn't what made my heart stop.

Something glimmered faintly near his hand - a small metallic chip, etched with the same crest I'd seen in the archives.

Armond Syndicate.

And beneath it, carved in code letters -
Project Lazarus – Rebirth Protocol: Subject D.V.
My blood turned to ice.

He wasn't just part of it.

He was it.

I stumbled back, whispering, "What are you?"

His eyes fluttered open, faint but focused.

"Elena," he breathed, voice breaking. "I told you once... every system has a ghost exit."

Then his gaze darkened - and his pulse flatlined.
