Chapter 74 The third will

Chapter 74 The third will
The sound came again low, layered, and wrong. It did not echo like a horn, nor ripple like qi. It pressed inward, as if the air itself were being folded. The villagers nearest the ridges staggered, clutching their chests, not in pain but in sudden vertigo, as though their sense of direction had been quietly rewritten.

Lian Hua’s breath caught. That’s not the Court,”she whispered, the gate answered her before anyone else could. Its rhythm until now synchronized with her bloodline and the villagers’ resonance stuttered. Not a break,a hesitation. As if something had spoken to it in a language older than command.

From the northern ridge, the fog began to move. Not drift, not part, It coalesced.

A figure stepped forward, tall and indistinct at first, its outline constantly reconfiguring sometimes humanoid, sometimes something angular and vast. Sigils crawled across its surface like living script, not carved or imposed, but grown.

The Court emissary froze. For the first time since the battle began, genuine alarm cracked through their composure. That presence ,the emissary murmured. Impossible you sealed them.

Lian Hua’s blood ran cold.Them? The Gate pulsed again harder this time and Lian Hua felt it: recognition without loyalty. The thing on the ridge spoke, and when it did, every sound in the valley dimmed to make room for its voice.

Gate bearer,it said, tone layered with harmonics that scraped against thought itself. You are not the first to wake it,you are merely the most compatible.

The Court soldiers recoiled. Even the constructs hesitated, their sigils flickering erratically.

Shen Wei did not have the luxury of listening. His duel had reached collapse, the fused construct emissary before him had adapted fully now, movements no longer mechanical but anticipatory. Each strike Shen Wei made was countered a breath before it landed, as if his intent were being read directly from his marrow.

A blow slipped past his guard.Pain exploded through his side. He hit the ground hard, skidding across broken stone, breath knocked from his lungs. His sword clattered just out of reach.

Shen Wei! Lian Hua cried. He tried to rise. His body refused. The construct raised its weapon condensed sigil light humming with execution intent.

Across the valley, the traitor smiled faintly, hands still moving in subtle synchronization with the Court’s arrays and the third presence laughed.

Softly, you see now, it said to Lian Hua. The Court seeks to own the gate. You seek to share it but the gate itself seeks something else.

What? she demanded, heart pounding.Continuity, the gate surged. Not outward, inward. Lian Hua gasped as a crushing pressure slammed into her core. Memories that were not hers flooded her senses: previous gate bearers, entire settlements bound and consumed, valleys that had chosen unity and been erased when their will diverged. She staggered, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.

The villagers cried out as the resonance strained. Some fell to their knees, clutching at the earth as the connection threatened to overload.

Lian Hua! Elder Ming shouted. The gate is destabilizing! The third presence stepped closer too close. Roots recoiled from it,water fell flat where it passed.

You cannot maintain this balance,it said calmly.“
Not against the court. Not against betrayal, yield the gate’s autonomy to me, and I will stabilize it. I will remove the court from this valley permanently.

The Court emissary snapped their head toward the figure. You were never meant to awaken fully! And yet,it replied, almost amused, here we are.

Shen Wei saw none of this clearly only felt the gate’s rhythm fracture through him. He forced himself upright, dragging his sword back into his hand with shaking fingers.

No,he rasped. Lian Hua don’t listen.

The construct struck. Shen Wei barely raised his blade in time. The impact shattered the ground beneath him, driving him to one knee. His arms screamed. His vision blurred. This was it,Lian Hua made her decision.

She did not reach outward, she cut inward with a sharp, deliberate motion, she severed her bloodline’s full synchronization with the villagers just enough. The shared rhythm fractured into layers: villagers anchored to the land, the gate bound to her, and her bloodline standing alone at the center.

The pain was immediate and savage. She screamed as the gate’s full weight crashed into her consciousness, unmediated by the collective. Blood spilled freely now, soaking into the stone circle.

The third presence recoiled for the first time. You would centralize control? it demanded. That path destroys gate bearers.Maybe, Lian Hua gasped, forcing herself upright, eyes blazing but it denies you.

The Gate roared. Not aloud but through reality.Power snapped back into alignment, brutal and precise. The constructs faltered as their borrowed resonance was ripped away, the traitor staggered, coughing blood as their synchronization collapsed.

Across the battlefield, Shen Wei felt the change like a hand on his spine. The next strike he delivered landed, the construct shattered sigils imploding, metal folding inward as if crushed by invisible gravity.

Shen Wei didn’t stop. He surged forward, every movement fueled by the gate’s sharpened, singular will. The Court emissary retreated, shock finally breaking their composure but Lian Hua swayed, barely standing.

The Gate was stable. For now,the third presence regarded her in silence, its form unraveling slightly at the edges.Very well, gate bearer,it said at last. You have chosen dominion over harmony. That makes you interesting.

It began to withdraw into the fog but not fully. This conflict has outgrown the court, it continued. Others will come, those who remember what the Gate was before it learned restraint.

The fog collapsed inward and vanished. The valley fell into a stunned, fragile quiet. Shen Wei turned toward Lian Hua just as her knees buckled,he caught her before she hit the stone. Her eyes fluttered, unfocused, bloodline still blazing dangerously close to rupture.

The gate pulsed steady, watchful, changed and far beyond the ridges, forces older and far more dangerous than the court began to take notice.
