Chapter 35 When the Light Chose Her
Silence. Not the peaceful kind, but the hollow, ringing kind the kind that follows thunder, battle, heartbreak.
Lian Hua floated in it.
Weightless,sightless.
Her body felt suspended in warm light, as if she’d been lifted into the soft belly of the moon. The world around her was not entirely gone she could still feel echoes, like threads tugging at her fingertips.
Shen Wei’s voice.Calling her name,calling her back.
She reached toward the sound but a hand caught her wrist.
Not Shen Wei’s.
Soft, familiar… feminine.
“Do not rush,” a calm voice murmured. “The vow you spoke broke every chain. The world needs a moment to remember how to hold you.”
Lian Hua opened her eyes.
She stood in a field of drifting blossoms not earthly ones, but made of light. The sky was endless silver, her breath caught.
“The Realm of Echoes…” she whispered.
Lian Xue stepped into view, her expression unreadable. “You returned here because this is where your thread was first woven. The vow you spoke… it did not just free Shen Wei.”
Lian Hua’s heart stuttered. “What do you mean? Where is he? Is he alive?”
Lian Xue nodded. “Alive but caught at the edge of the rift you created. You severed destiny’s hold but doing so tore open a path between realms.”
Lian Hua’s pulse quickened. “Take me to him.”
“The Realm is unstable,” Lian Xue warned gently. “If you step out now, you risk tearing your spirit apart.”
“I don’t care.” Her voice shook. “He needs me.”
Something shifted in Lian Xue’s eyes admiration, perhaps grief.
“You love him,” Lian Xue said quietly. “Even knowing love was the downfall of your first life.”
Lian Hua drew in a trembling breath. “That’s why this life must be different.”
Before Lian Xue could respond, a violent tremor cracked the silver sky above them.
A voice hoarse, desperate cut through.
“Lian Hua!”
Shen Wei.
The sound slammed into her chest like a physical force. She lunged forward, searching the rupturing horizon.
The sky tore open in a jagged seam, and there he was.
Shen Wei hung suspended on the other side of the rift one hand bleeding as it clawed at fractured light, the other reaching for her with raw desperation. His face was pale, jaw clenched in pain, but his eyes never left her.
The force pulling him was the same one that had nearly taken his life minutes earlier.
He was fighting destiny itself to reach her.
“Lian Hua!” His voice cracked. “Stay where you are! The rift is unstable it will take you too!”
She stepped toward him anyway.
“Let it try.” Her voice shook but held steady. “I will not watch you be taken from me.”
His expression shattered relief and terror mixing like ink in water.
“Please,” he said, breathless. “Don’t risk”
“Shen Wei,” she whispered. “I choose you.”
The rift surged open.
A gust of blinding silver wind hurled toward her.
Lian Xue’s eyes widened.
“Lian Hua if you step through now, you will bind your fate to his completely. There will be no undoing it, not in this life not in the next.”
Lian Hua’s heartbeat steadied.
“I’m not afraid.”
And before anyone could stop her,she ran.
The world split beneath her feet. Blossoms scattered like falling stars. Shen Wei reached with everything he had left, pain tearing through every line of his body.
Their fingers brushed,then clasped.
The moment their hands met, the rift exploded with light.
Shen Wei pulled her into his arms, crushing her against him as if afraid she would dissolve in the glow. His voice broke against her hair.
“Don’t ever do that again,” he whispered, trembling. “Don’t ever choose danger for me.”
Her fingers curled into the back of his robe, clinging to the warmth of him.
“I will always choose you,” she murmured.
The Realm trembled violently, cracks racing across its silver sky.
Shen Wei tightened his grip, voice urgent now. “We have to leave this place is collapsing!”
But before they could move a shadow rose from the broken horizon.
Tall,armored,the First Frost Guardian.
His voice boomed through the collapsing Realm.
“You break destiny’s chains… yet still run from its judgment.”
Shen Wei shielded her instantly, blade appearing in his hand like a thought.
The Guardian’s silver eyes burned.
“In this life or the next… the Moon Blessed cannot escape me.”
The Realm shattered around them.
The world went dark and they fell.Together.
