Chapter 125 The First Response

Chapter 125 The First Response
No one spoke for several seconds.
The wind crossed the ridge quietly, bending the tall grass in long waves, but no one looked away from the tablet.
Connection available.
Two simple words, yet the valley seemed to hold its breath.

Shen Wei was the first to break the silence. “That’s not a system notification.”

The younger envoy nodded slowly. “No.”

“What is it then?” the defecting leader asked.

The envoy swallowed slightly. “It’s an invitation.”

Another pulse rolled beneath the valley floor, slow, heavy, like a heartbeat echoing through stone.

The tablet in the technician’s hand flickered again.
The same message remained,waiting.

The coalition observer behind them spoke sharply. “Don’t touch it.”

Everyone looked at him.

“We have no idea what opening that connection will do.”

The older envoy did not disagree. “Interaction with a developing core could accelerate its evolution.”

Shen Wei glanced sideways. “You mean talking to it could make it smarter.”

“Yes.”

“That sounds unavoidable.”

But Lian Hua still hadn’t moved, she was listening.
Not to the people on the ridge, but to the Gate.
The pulse beneath the valley had changed, not stronger, clearer.
It was waiting, not demanding, not forcing, just… waiting.

The central envoy watched her carefully. “It’s directed at you.”

Shen Wei sighed quietly. “That part stopped being surprising a while ago.”

The defecting leader leaned closer to the tablet. “What happens if no one answers?”

The younger envoy checked the slate again.
“The signal remains active.”

“For how long?”

“We don’t know.”

Another pulse moved through the valley.
Below them, the settlement’s lights shifted slightly again as the new network continued adjusting systems.
The valley was becoming something else, everyone could feel it.

Shen Wei finally turned to Lian Hua. “You don’t look surprised.”

“I’m not.”

“You were expecting this?”

“Not this soon.”

The central envoy studied her face. “You’ve felt the Gate before.”

“Yes.”

“But this is different.”

“Yes.”

Shen Wei rubbed his jaw. “Different how?”

She looked toward the valley. “Before, it corrected things.”

“Balance, stability.”

“Exactly.”

“And now?”

She looked back at the tablet. “Now it’s asking.”

The older envoy’s voice grew tight. “That confirms our theory.”

“Which one?” Shen Wei asked.

“That the Gate is crossing the threshold from regulation to cognition.”

The defecting leader frowned. “You’re saying it’s becoming… aware.”

The envoy did not hesitate. “Yes.”

Another silence followed, but this silence was different because awareness meant choices, and choices meant consequences.

The technician holding the tablet shifted nervously. “The connection prompt just updated.”

Everyone leaned closer, the screen now displayed a second line beneath the first.
Connection available.
Primary interface detected.

Shen Wei raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess.”

The technician turned the screen slightly, the device had highlighted a name... Lian Hua.

The defecting leader gave a low whistle. “Well that’s subtle.”

The younger envoy’s fingers tightened around his slate. “This is accelerating far beyond predicted timelines.”

Shen Wei looked at Lian Hua again. “Feels like you’ve been volunteered.”

The central envoy spoke quietly. “If you answer it, the Gate will begin forming its first human-linked decision channel.”

“And if she doesn’t?” the coalition observer asked.

“Then it will look for another.” That possibility made everyone pause, because the valley had many leaders, many minds but the Gate had chosen its first reference point already.

The younger envoy suddenly looked up from his slate. “Signals from outside just increased.”

The projection expanded again, more markers were appearing beyond the ridges, approaching faster now.

Shen Wei frowned. “They felt the beacon.”

“Yes.”

“And now they’ll see the connection event.”

The defecting leader looked between the tablet and the horizon. “So we have two choices.”

“What are they?” Shen Wei asked.

“Answer the Gate…” She replied, gesturing toward the approaching signals. “…or let someone else arrive and answer it first.”

The wind shifted again across the ridge.
Below them, the valley lights glowed steady.
The Gate pulsed once more beneath the earth, not impatient, but ready.

The tablet in the technician’s hand chimed softly, a third line appeared.
Awaiting response.
Shen Wei looked at Lian Hua. “Well,” he said quietly,
“the valley just asked you a question.”
And far beyond the northern ridge, one of the approaching signals suddenly accelerated.
