“How the fuck did that happen?!” Aielle pointed and yelled at her TV screen, where the news of ‘Attempted assassination of DAX CEO – Ivon Valachi’ was making waves on the headlines.
Following the grainy video of the paramedics attending to a pale unconscious Ivon lying in a sea of his blood, she paced and bit her fingernail, ripping dead skin off with her teeth.
Picking up her phone on the first ring, “What the fuck am I watching? Did you do this?”
The robotic voice irritated the life out of her. “I called to tell you beforehand but escaping was a full time job. I took out one of our problems- he’ll survive but this widens the window we need.”
“We spoke about this before remember?” Aielle scratched her jaw, “I don’t recall reaching an agreement where Ivon would be shot in the middle of the fucking street!”
“Your emotions are all over the place, Aielle.” How the robotic voice managed to capture the condensation hidden in her contact’s voice, she didn’t know. “This was always going to be the plan, he just helped us get there faster. Set the plan in motion, Leon can’t protect every angle himself.”
“The plan is already in motion, but the next time you pull a stunt like this, without consulting me, we are going to have very big problems my friend.” Aielle clicked off before he could, her eyes trained on Ivon’s bloody face. “Fuck!”
Snatching her jacket off the chair, Aielle stuffed her phone into her back pocket. Robotic voice had one thing straight, her emotions were all over the place and she needed to know why.
Throwing one leg over her beloved motor bike, she started it and took a minute to feel the beast purr between her thighs. Adrenaline high accomplished, Aielle kicked it into gear and tore out of her garage, zooming into the night.
It took an hour to maneuver out of her hiding place and connect to civilization, and another hour to track down the hospital Ivon had been transferred to. Riding by once to avoid detection, Aielle parked the bike at the farthest end of the car park – a stupid risk, took off her helmet and replaced it with cap. Fixing her appearance in the side mirror, Aielle took the time to count the guards – Leon’s men hanging outside the hospital.
With her partner drawing the short end of the string, it would be wise not to bump into Leon, or she wouldn’t leave the hospital without spilling more blood. He had Poco, but now, he was going to double the hunt for her head.
Mixing in with a group walking into the hospital, Aielle kept her eyes forward and mouth moving, even though she wasn’t saying actual comprehensible words – once inside, she approached the nurses’ station and asked for a random patient.
“I’m afraid we don’t have a Sarah Parker on our records” The tired nurse looked over Aielle’s shoulders. “Next”
“Please, I was told she was transferred here. She was involved in a horrible motorcycle accident.” Aielle sniffled and rubbed her arms. “I really need to know my sister is okay.”
Swallowing a heavy sigh, the nurse tapped the name into the system, shook her head and stood. “Let me see what I can get from my colleague downstairs. Everywhere is buzzing today so they aren’t answering the phone. Stay put, if I have any information about her, I’ll let you know when I get back- what’s your name?”
“Amy- Amy Parker” The nurse wrote down her name on a sticky note as she hurried away.
Smiling shakily at the elderly couple standing behind her, “I’m sorry for taking so much time.”
“It’s okay honey. Our son died riding one of those demonic things.” The woman patted the hand of her husband. “I hope and pray your sister is okay, and if she survives, just know the lord gave her a second chance.”
Aielle managed to squeeze out a tear for her benefit, quickly swiping the ID card the nurse had left behind when the couple turned away to take a seat.
Weaving through multiple people, Aielle stumbled upon the dressing room. Crossing her fingers, she took off her cap before she walked in.
“I’m fucking dead on my feet.” A nurse whined as she threw a shirt over her head. “Can I not come in tomorrow?”
“Put in your resignation letter on your way out” Another nurse, much younger than the first said. “We both know Hannah is going to blow a fuse if we’re ten minutes late, so suck it up and sleep early when you get home.”
The third, much older nurse was the one who noticed her. “Are you new? I haven’t seen you around.”
“Yes, I am” Aielle smiled, fishing immediately for information. “I was at the Valachi scene and had to help out before the paramedics got there. When I got here, it took a while to get proper identification, and now I need to clock in for my shift”
“Damn! It’s sick what that person did, and from what I heard, the bullet missed his heart by an inch, he could have been dead before hitting the ground.” The youngest nurse shook her head, “Good luck on your first shift, and maybe say hello the billionaire when he wakes up.”
“Maddie!” The older nurse frowned at her. “Now’s not the time to make funny jokes, a young man is fighting for his life at the moment.”
Maddie mumbled out an apology, mouthing something to Aielle on her way out, she pointed a finger at the nurse and put two fingers to her head mimicking a gun.
“I’m guessing you haven’t been given a locker yet, you’ll get one before your shift is over, and as for uniforms, you can check for your size in that pile over there, but make sure to get yours when your shift is over.”
Aielle nodded, throwing on the first pair she picked out, it was a little big but it gave her enough room to move if she needed to fight her way out. “Thank you for your help. The nurse told me to report back so I know the floor Mr. Valachi is on.”
The frown lines on her forehead deepened. “Are you on his case? It’s quite rare for a newbie to be assigned to a sensitive case.”
“Oh no, I am not on his case” Aielle waved her hands and laughed self-depreciating, “She said his brother has a few questions for me since I was at the scene.”
“That makes more sense.” She didn’t look convinced. “He’s on the last floor, you can use the staff elevator since you have your ID card.”
Aielle waved the said card, “Thank you again, have a lovely evening.” The nurse didn’t return her enthusiasm
Tossing her clothes into the nearest trash can, Aielle hung out in corners, to catch the proper gossip mill of the hospital which led her right to the elevator.
Pressing the button to call the elevator, Aielle humored a few young nurses who clocked that she was new, and didn’t mind gossiping about the billionaire.
When the box arrived, she stepped in, pressed the last button and swiped the ID card she’d stolen over the reader.
She was off to meet this mysterious billionaire
