Chapter 29 Chapter 29 Awakening Strength
Chapter 29 Chapter 29 Awakening Strength
Rryan woke slowly.
Not with panic. Not with pain.
With weight and authority.
The familiar, grounding weight of his body returning to him slowly, piece by piece—muscle first, then breath, then the quiet thrum of power settling back into his bones like something that had only stepped away, not been taken.
His eyes opened to dim light and the stone walls he knew intimately, his bedchamber. The air smelled of herbs, blood magic long spent, and the faint trace of Kira’s energy still lingering in the room like heat after a flame has been extinguished.
He inhaled deeply.
His lungs answered.
That alone told him everything.
I’m still here..Still King.
His fingers twitched—and found mine.
I slept beside him, curled carefully as if afraid to disturb what remained fragile. My hand was still wrapped around his, my grip instinctive, possessive, unwilling to let go even in sleep.
Rryan turned his head slightly, just enough to see me. The sight of me hit harder than any wound he’d taken in the valley. Pale from exhaustion, hair loose, his face lined with worry he never allowed others to see.
He squeezed my hand.
Just once, enough to get my attention.
My eyes flew open instantly.
“Your—” My breath caught. “Rryan?”
His mouth felt dry, throat rough, but his voice came out steady. “I’m here.”
I leaned forward and pressed my forehead to his chest, breathing like I’d been holding it for days.
He closed his eyes again—not from weakness, but from relief.
“I heard you,” he said quietly. “Even when I couldn’t answer.”
I nodded, leaning against him. “Good. Because I wasn’t stopping.”
A soft knock sounded at the doorway.
Thorn entered, watching King Rryan carefully.
Rryan felt him before he saw him.
His power filled the room, like a pressure change. Controlled. Ancient. Not vampyr. Not mortal. Not anything the valley produced.
Dark Fae.
Rryan’s gaze sharpened as Thorn stopped a respectful distance from the bed, posture relaxed but alert. Not arrogant. Not submissive. Balanced.
“Interesting,” he tried to smile.
“So,” Rryan said, his voice still rough but carrying authority, “you’re the one who put half the wards on my kingdom while I was unconscious.”
Thorn inclined his head. “I assisted. I did not override what was already yours,” he said, leaning on the doorway.
That earned him a faint grin. He walked forward.
“Smart,” Rryan said. He shifted slightly, testing himself. Strength answered immediately—slower than usual, but solid. “You’re Thorn.”
“Yes.”
“King Thorn,” Rryan corrected.
Thorn met his gaze without flinching. “Yes.”
Rryan studied him for a long moment. He saw it then—the way Thorn’s attention flicked briefly toward the far end of the room, toward where Kira’s magic still clung faintly to the air. Subtle. Unconscious.
Personal, intimate.
Rryan exhaled slowly. “You did good work.”
Thorn’s shoulders eased just slightly. “Your healer is formidable.”
“She is so much more than just my healer,” Rryan agreed. Then his expression hardened—not threatening, but absolute. “And she is not something to be careless with.”
Thorn understood. “I would never.”
Rryan’s eyes narrowed. “If you ever do—”
“You won’t need to finish that sentence,” Thorn said calmly. “I’m not foolish.”
Rryan nodded once. Warning delivered. Respect exchanged.
Footsteps echoed in the corridor.
Familiar ones.
Niklaus entered first, already talking.
“We told her it wasn’t urgent,” he was saying, “but she absolutely lost her—”
Aurora elbowed him. “He’s awake.”
Both twins froze.
Then Niklaus grinned like a blade finding its mark. “About time.”
Aurora was at the bedside in an instant, fingers pressing lightly to Rryan’s arm, her eyes glowing faintly as she checked him without asking permission. As she hugged him, her fire-red curls spilling over his arm.
“You’re solid,” she said. “Still slower than usual,” she teased.
“Careful,” Rryan said dryly. “You’ll start sounding like a healer.”
Niklaus snorted. “You should’ve seen Lydia.”
I stiffened, I knew what was coming.. I buried my face in my hands, hiding a mischievous grin.
Rryan raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
Niklaus launched in, delighted. “Middle of the night... Dead silent... we sat on top of our pyramid, guarding.. Then suddenly— the pyramid doors flew open, Lydia running out into the courtyard waving her arms like a saloon whore who’d just been robbed of her wages—”
Rryan choked.
Actually choked.
A sharp bark of laughter tore out of him, followed by a coughing fit that had me instantly sitting up, scolding him even as relief flooded my face.
Niklaus laughed harder. Aurora rolled her eyes...
“She was screaming about visions and empty beds and ‘they’re gone, they’re gone,’” Niklaus continued. “Never seen her move that fast, in my life...”
Rryan wiped his mouth, still laughing. “Gods help us, my children have aged ten years overnight!”
His gaze softened as he looked at his twins. They stood taller than he remembered. Sharper. More certain. No longer children playing with power.
They had stood guard.
They had held the line.
“You did well,” he said quietly, with pride.
Aurora straightened. Niklaus nodded once, proud but contained.
Days passed..
King Danyel’s recovery was slower, but steady. Rryan could feel him now—present, anchored, healing properly. That knowledge settled something deep in his chest. He had watched him go down first, back in the cave.
Outside the bedchamber, Lydia sat rigidly on her cushioned bench, arms crossed, listening whether she wanted to or not.
“Charming,” she muttered. “Absolutely charming, lil brats!.” she smiled despite herself.
Which was exactly how she preferred them, sassy to their core..
Rryan leaned back against the pillows, strength continuing to gather. The kingdom was breathing again. The wards held. Allies stood near.
And somewhere beyond the jungle, he knew—without seeing—Shade was watching.
Waiting.
Rryan’s fingers tightened briefly around mine as I told him about K'awiil, and King Pakal joining us in our search for him, his eyebrow rose.
“He came...”
I nodded, “..they both did.”
“Bringing warriors, and Thorn..” King Pakal spoke from the doorway. Ryan smiled, hearing his familiar voice. They had grown up together centuries ago. Childhood friends, inseparable. Brothers to different mothers.
“I’m not done, not yet,” he said softly, smiling. “Whatever tried to bury us… Whatever thinks this kingdom is weakened…”
King Pakal finished his words. “.. They are sadly mistaken.”
His eyes burned with promise.
“They misjudged.” He added.
Outside, the night deepened.
The whole kingdom listened…waiting.. Even the new arrivals held deep respect for their soon-to-be King. Their makeshift camp. grew by the day as more joined them hopefull for a chance to serve under King Rryan 'The Ripper'. Grandson of Camazotz. Ruler of the Mayan Underworld.
