Too Nice
Too Nice
Lilith POV
"Thank you," Ava nodded. "I love it," she said as she continued to read.
"Tomorrow night, we are going out to check the cave again. We have to know what we are against," he said.
"I have something to tell you. I know you would be pissed, but I am sorry I did it."
"Try me. Go on," Theo said.
"Hmm, a wolf bit me," I said.
"What?" He was shocked to hear what I said. "What? Wolf? How is that possible? There aren't any wolves in California."
"I told her the same thing until I saw the mark. The bite mark on her. It was serious and took time to heal," Ava said. She couldn't keep quiet.
"Are you all right?" he asked.
I nodded. "Yes, I am. After I fed, I became alright. We found a dead body, and the police got involved, and trust me, Theo, it was a wolf. I am very sure. I think I am." I said.
"That is new, but I believe you. Why would a queen lie for no reason? Don't worry, we will check that out tomorrow when you get here," he said, and I nodded. I smiled at him, and he smiled back at me. He was nicer. A lot nicer. He wasn't aggressive or angry. He had a smile on his face. That would be another question to ask Ethan later.
I looked at Ava. "It is time to go back to the dorm," I said, but she didn't want to leave.
"Can't we stay for a little while? Please!"
"Why? The dorm is more fun," I said.
"Just a little while." She continued with the book she was reading.
"But Ava! You know it isn't safe outside at night, and you know how dangerous the woods are. Please, let's go."
She looked at me. "Are you scared?" she asked. I scoffed. How could she ask me that?
"No," I said, and she continued with the book she was reading. Of course, I wasn't scared, but what if we came across the wolf again?
"I will take you guys home. Riley will be here soon, and I guess she want to talk to you about something," Theo said. I wondered what Riley wanted to tell me. Was it about Ava?
We waited for a while, and I heard Riley's voice as she walked into Theo's room. Ava continued to read her book. Riley waved at me, and I waved back. "Theo said you wanted to talk to me," I said, and she nodded. "Was it about Ava?" I asked, mouthing to her. She shook her head, and I let out a sigh of relief.
"I am surprised my brother didn't shout at you, Lilith.” She handed Theo a book. "That is what you asked for."
"What is that?" I asked Theo.
He looked at the back of the book. "I asked Riley to get it for me at the library."
"So she went to the library." I nodded slowly. Theo opened the book.
"This is about supernatural beings. I wanted to see if I could find any information about the demons I killed at your dorm."
"A demon entered your dorm?" Ava asked, and I nodded.
"Amazing," she said, standing and walking towards me. "Why didn't you tell me?" she asked. "Oh, I probably shouldn't have known. I would have freaked out," she added, and I agreed, nodding in response.
"Lilith," Riley called out. "I have something to tell you."
I focused on her. "What is it?"
"I saw Beauty on my way to the library, but she didn't see me. They were talking about Daniel. They used magic on him. They were discussing this plan. I think they wanted to make him hate you or something. I didn't hear the rest."
“I knew it! I knew that's what she was planning.”
"You knew?" Riley asked, and I nodded. "Why aren't you doing anything?" Well, I couldn't do anything yet. I needed to find a way to defeat her. I thought about getting on the council's bad side and I guess her father would make things easier for me. He was up to no good, and if the council found out, they would kill him, giving me an opportunity to settle the score with Beauty.
I didn't know how we ended up this way because I used to see her as my friend. If only she had listened to my side of the story and taken my side back then, things would have been better between us. We would have gotten along.
"I can't do anything yet. I confronted her today, and she denied it. Daniel was acting strangely. I guess she wanted him to forget about me again or hate me. I felt it, Riley," I said. "It's what the council wants. They want to end things between Daniel and me, and I won't let that happen. Daniel is the guy I love."
"You mean Alaric!" Ava corrected.
"Same thing!" Riley and I said in unison, turning to face Ava. She looked away and went back to the book she was reading.
"Can I say something?" Theo asked.
"Go on," I told him.
"What is it about Alaric? Why do you like him so much that you're willing to go against the council?" he asked. He didn't understand who Alaric was to me. He was like a god. He was someone I would give my life for. If Alaric was in danger and my life was required to keep him alive, I would give my life. I looked at Theo.
"Alaric isn't like other people. He's different. He's kind and so unique. When no one was on my side, he was. He gave his life for me. To save me, he put his own life on the line without a second thought. Shouldn't I give my life for him too? Shouldn't I at least fight for his life?" I asked.
"I didn't know, Lilith," Ava said. "I didn't know you went through all that."
"It's alright. I will continue to go against the council to save his life," I said. "Have I answered your question, Theo?" He nodded.
Ava picked up her bag. "I'm ready to go," she said. I stood up and grabbed my bag too. Theo wanted to come along, but I stopped him. I didn't want him to follow us. Now that Ava knew what I was, it would be easier to do what I needed to do if anything attacked us on the road.
"I'll be here tomorrow evening for the mission," I said.
"What about me?" Ava asked.
"It's too dangerous for a human to go there," Theo said, and Ava understood. Then we left the community.
