Erynn's Secret
Clara woke with a start, her heart racing. The dreams of her deaths still felt real – too real. She sat up quickly, looking around. She was in her bedroom at the castle, sunshine streaming through the windows.
"Easy," said a voice beside her. "You've been asleep for three days."
It was Lucien, sitting in a chair by her bed. His eyes were tired, with dark rings beneath them. He hadn't left her side.
"Three days?" Clara touched her throat, which felt dry. "What happened?"
"After our kiss, you collapsed. The bond between us grew stronger, but something went wrong." Lucien handed her a glass of water. "The worlds stabilized for now, but Isolde says it's temporary."
Clara drank heavily, then asked, "Where are the others?"
"Isolde is researching in the library. Dominic is recovering – whatever you did to him changed him. And Erynn..." Lucien frowned. "She disappears for hours at a time. Says she's looking for another way to save the worlds."
Clara remembered the voice from her dreams: The circle must continue. The Bridge needs sacrifice. A chill ran down her spine.
"I need to talk to Erynn," she said, pushing back the blankets.
"You should rest," Lucien argued.
Clara shook her head. "There's no time. Something isn't right."
After changing into a simple dress, Clara walked through the castle with Lucien. Everything looked different now. Windows that once showed only the misty forest now revealed glimpses of all three worlds – the human realm with its green trees, the vampire realm with its red skies, and the witch realm sparkling with silver light.
"Our kiss did this?" Clara asked, touching a window that showed all three scenes blending together.
"Yes," Lucien said. "We're holding the worlds in balance, but Isolde says it won't last. The bond needs to be completed fully."
They found Isolde in the library, surrounded by ancient books. Her bright eyes looked up when they entered.
"Clara! You're awake." She stood quickly. "How do you feel?"
"Strange," Clara admitted. "I had dreams... of all my deaths."
Isolde's face got serious. "Those weren't just dreams. They were memories. Your soul remembers everything, even if your mind doesn't."
"Where's Erynn?" Clara asked. "I need to talk to her."
"She left an hour ago," Isolde said. "She's been acting strangely since you completed part of the bond with Lucien."
Clara felt that same pull in her chest that had led her through the hidden part of the castle. It was pulling her now, urging her to follow.
"I can find her," Clara said suddenly.
"How?" Lucien asked.
"I just... know." Clara couldn't explain it better than that. The silver light inside her seemed linked to everyone involved in the curse. "I need to go alone."
"No," Lucien said strongly. "It's too dangerous."
"I'll be careful," Clara promised. "But Erynn might not talk freely if you're there. She knows you don't fully trust her."
After much argument, Lucien reluctantly agreed. Clara followed the pull in her chest, moving through the castle's twisting halls. The feeling got stronger as she descended a staircase she'd never seen before, leading deep underground.
The stairs stopped at a heavy wooden door. Clara heard voices on the other side. One was Erynn's. The other was deeper, older somehow.
Carefully, Clara cracked the door open just enough to peek inside.
The room beyond was circular, with strange symbols cut into the stone floor. Erynn stood in the middle, her red hair loose around her shoulders. Her green eyes glowed in the dim light.
But what shocked Clara most was that Erynn looked... different. Her skin shimmered with tiny scales that caught the light. Her ears came to small points. And when she spoke, Clara could see sharp teeth.
"The bond is forming," Erynn said to the empty air. "But not fast enough. The human girl collapsed before it was complete."
"We are running out of time," answered a voice that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere. "Our world cannot sustain itself much longer."
"I know," Erynn sounded annoyed. "But forcing it could destroy all the worlds, not just ours."
Clara leaned closer, trying to see who Erynn was talking to. Her foot hit a loose stone, making a small noise.
Erynn spun around. "Who's there?"
Clara froze, holding her breath. After a moment, Erynn turned back to the center of the room.
"I must go," she told the voice. "I'll report again tomorrow."
Then Erynn did something that made Clara's eyes widen. She pulled a small knife from her sleeve and cut her hand. Blood dripped onto the floor, but it wasn't red. It was blue and glowed like stars.
"By blood and bone, by flesh and stone, open the way to the world beyond," Erynn repeated.
The blue blood made a perfect circle on the floor. Then the circle began to spin, faster and faster, until it opened into a swirling opening. Through it, Clara could see a strange scenery – floating islands covered in crystal trees under a purple sky with three moons.
Erynn stepped into the portal and disappeared. The opening closed behind her, leaving only a faint blue stain on the stone floor.
Clara pushed the door open fully and stepped into the room. Her mind was racing. Erynn wasn't human. She wasn't a vampire or a witch either. She was something else entirely – something from another world.
Suddenly, the pull in Clara's chest changed. It wasn't leading her anymore; it was warning her. She turned to leave, but the door slammed shut.
"Curious little witch," said a voice behind her.
Clara spun around. Dominic stood there, but he looked different too. His eyes were no longer black, but they weren't normal either. They swirled with colors Clara had never seen before.
"Dominic," she gasped. "What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same question." He stepped closer. "Spying on Erynn? Learning her secrets?"
"You knew," Clara realized. "You knew she wasn't from our worlds."
Dominic smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Of course I knew. Why do you think the Creator chose me as a vessel? I've known about the fourth world for centuries."
"Fourth world?" Clara's mind raced. "The outline only mentioned three."
"Because the fourth was supposed to remain secret." Dominic's voice changed, becoming deeper and older. "It was dying long before the others began to merge."
Clara backed away, but her heel hit the wall. There was nowhere to run.
"What do you want?" she asked, trying to sound brave.
"What I've always wanted." Dominic's eyes glowed brighter. "To save what can be saved. Erynn believes all four worlds can survive. The Creator knows better."
Clara felt the silver light stirring inside her. Maybe she could fight him, like she fought the tainted vampires.
"Lucien will find me," she said. "He'll know something's wrong."
"Lucien is busy with Isolde, searching for a way to complete your bond." Dominic stepped closer. "They won't notice you're missing until it's too late."
He raised his hand. The symbols on the floor started to glow. Clara felt the air getting thick around her, making it hard to breathe.
"What are you doing?" she gasped.
"Completing what Erynn started," Dominic said. "But instead of saving all worlds, we'll save just one – by sacrificing the others."
The floor beneath Clara's feet started to crack. Blue light – the same color as Erynn's blood – poured through.
"Lucien!" Clara screamed, but the thick air swallowed her words.
As the floor gave way beneath her, Clara caught one last look of Dominic's face. He wasn't happy anymore. He looked sad.
"I'm sorry, Bridge," he whispered. "But some worlds must die so others can live."
Then Clara was falling through blue light, tumbling toward the world Erynn had come from – the world no one was meant to know existed.
