Chapter 44 The Departure
Chapter 44 The Departure
Isabella's POV
The estate is quiet in the early morning.
Isabella walks down the driveway with nothing but a bag containing money and documents and the fragments of a life she's leaving behind. She doesn't look back at the house. Doesn't allow herself to pause or reconsider.
If she looks back, she'll go back inside. If she hesitates, she'll lose her nerve.
Teo is waiting at the gate with his truck like he's been expecting her all along. He doesn't try to stop her or convince her to stay. Doesn't say anything about Damián or regret or the choice she's making.
He just nods and opens the passenger door.
They drive in silence through San Isidro. The city is waking up. People are moving through the streets. Normal people living normal lives, completely unaware that a woman is running from the man who controls this territory.
After twenty minutes of driving, Teo finally speaks.
"He'll come for you," he says quietly. His eyes stay on the road. "Once he processes the loss. Once he understands that you're really gone and not coming back. He'll come looking for you."
Isabella watches the city pass by her window.
"I know," she says.
"And he'll find you," Teo continues. "Because that's what he does. He finds people. He hunts them down. He doesn't accept loss."
"I know," Isabella repeats.
"So you need to understand what that means," Teo says. He finally glances at her. "It means he won't stop. It means he'll spend resources and time and energy trying to locate you. It means he might destroy people trying to find you."
Isabella's hands clench into fists.
"And I can't let him do that," she says. "Which means I can't let him find me. Which means I have to disappear completely."
Teo nods like she's finally understood something he's been trying to tell her all along.
They drive to a neighborhood Isabella doesn't recognize. The safe house is small and anonymous, tucked between other equally forgettable buildings. The kind of place where no one looks twice. The kind of place where people hide.
Lu is waiting inside.
She's tactical and professional, dressed in dark clothes with a gun holstered at her hip. But Isabella can see the concern in her friend's eyes. Can see how much this whole situation has cost her.
"You look like hell," Lu says by way of greeting.
"I feel like hell," Isabella responds.
Lu pulls her into a hug. It's quick and efficient, but Isabella feels the weight of friendship behind it. Feels the fact that Lu never stopped believing in her. Never stopped waiting for her to come back.
"Tell me everything," Lu says. She sits Isabella down at a table and produces a notebook and pen. She's in full agent mode now. Professional. Clinical. Ready to document every detail.
And Isabella does. She tells Lu everything.
She describes the investigation. The plan to infiltrate Damián's organization. The moment she realized he was innocent. The growing feelings that she couldn't control or deny.
She talks about Ghost. About the betrayal and the torture and the choice Damián made to prioritize revenge over mercy.
She describes what she saw in the containment room. The way Damián shot Ghost without hesitation. The way he took pleasure in causing pain. The way he became something darker than she could accept.
She tells Lu about the choice. The moment when Damián asked her to choose between him and her career. The moment when she thought she chose him.
And then she describes the morning she realized she couldn't stay. That love wasn't enough. That some people and some worlds are too broken to repair with love.
Lu listens without interrupting. Her pen moves across the notebook, documenting every word. Her expression doesn't change, but Isabella can see the calculation behind her eyes.
When Isabella finishes, Lu sets down her pen and leans back in her chair.
"Do you understand what you're giving me?" Lu asks.
"Information," Isabella says. "Evidence. Everything you need to build a case against Damián Flores."
"Not just him," Lu says. "Ghost. Victoria Lucci. Ghost's communications with the Lucci family. The merger plan. The torture. Everything."
She stands and walks to the window.
"This is enough to dismantle the entire Flores Cartel," Lu continues. "This is enough to arrest Damián. This is enough to put him away for life."
Isabella's chest tightens.
"I know," she says.
Lu turns to face her.
"Are you prepared for that?" Lu asks. "Are you prepared to testify? To go public with what you know? To watch the man you love get convicted because of information you provided?"
Isabella realizes she hasn't thought that far ahead. She's been so focused on leaving that she hasn't considered what comes after. Hasn't thought about what the DEA will do with the evidence she's giving them.
"What are you going to do with it?" Isabella asks.
"That depends on you," Lu says. She sits back down across from Isabella. "We can use this information to build a federal case. We can arrest Damián. We can prosecute him for his crimes. Or we can use it differently."
"What do you mean differently?" Isabella asks.
"I mean we can sit on it," Lu says. "We can document it. We can file it away. And we can use the threat of prosecution as leverage to force Damián to stop operating in San Isidro. We can force him to retire from the cartel business without actually prosecuting him."
Isabella's breath catches.
"Why would you do that?" she asks.
"Because I can see that you love him," Lu says simply. "And I know that testifying against him in court would destroy you. So I'm offering you an option. A way to leave him without destroying him completely."
Isabella feels tears sliding down her cheeks.
"There's a condition though," Lu continues. "If you take this option, if you accept this mercy, you have to disappear. Completely. You can never contact Damián again. You can never try to reach him or warn him or make sure he's okay. You have to let him go completely."
"I was already planning to do that," Isabella says.
"I know," Lu says. "But I need you to understand that it's permanent. There's no changing your mind. There's no reunion in five years when things calm down. There's just goodbye. Forever."
Isabella nods because she already understands this. Already accepts it.
"So what's your choice?" Lu asks.
Isabella thinks about Damián. Thinks about the man she loves and the violence he's capable of. Thinks about the choice between justice and mercy.
"Use the leverage," Isabella says. "Force him to stop. But don't prosecute him."
Lu nods slowly.
"There's a cost," she says. "If Damián doesn't cooperate, if he doesn't agree to our terms, we move forward with prosecution. And in that case, we're going to need you to testify. Are you prepared for that?"
"Yes," Isabella says. "If it comes to that."
Lu closes her notebook.
"Then we're done," she says. "You can stay here. Rest. Process. We'll handle the rest."
But as Lu stands to leave, she pauses.
"There's something you should know," Lu says. "Damián has already started looking for you. We've detected electronic surveillance. He's monitoring airports. He's put word out on the street. He's coming for you, Isa."
Isabella's blood runs cold.
"How long do I have?" she asks.
"Days," Lu says. "Maybe a week. We're doing everything we can to keep your location hidden, but he has resources we can't match. Eventually, he'll find you."
"And when he does?" Isabella asks.
"Then we protect you," Lu says. "Federal protection. Witness protection if necessary. But Isa, you need to understand something. If he finds you before we can move him out of the country, if he reaches you while he's still operating as a cartel boss, he'll kill you. He won't have a choice."
Isabella understands this completely.
"So we need to move fast," Lu continues. "We need to get our leverage in place. We need to give Damián an ultimatum before he can find you. And we need to do it in the next seventy-two hours or everything falls apart."
She walks toward the door.
"Get some rest," Lu says. "Tomorrow we start the next phase."
After Lu leaves, Isabella sits alone in the safe house and realizes what she's done.
She's given the DEA information that could destroy Damián. She's agreed to be leverage against him. She's made a choice that will either save him or destroy him, depending entirely on whether Damián agrees to walk away from his empire.
And she has no idea which he'll choose.
