Chapter 53
Chapter 53
Morning came with a fragile stillness, the kind that whispered of war on the horizon. In the Manor, soft light spilled through the shattered windows, bathing Emilia in its golden glow as she sat quietly near the old map table in the strategy room. The night with Luca felt like a stolen moment from a life she hadn't dared to hope for. But it was over.
Reality had returned with its sharp edges.
Seraphine was already pacing, her boots thudding against the cold stone floor. Her mouth was set in a grim line, eyes burning like coals. Kith stood to the side, silent, arms folded, trying not to provoke the storm.
"He fed her information," Seraphine hissed. "He lay in her bed and whispered secrets into her ears."
"Technically," Emilia cut in, her tone dry, "he was probably whispering more than secrets."
Kith choked on a breath. Even Luca, perched against a nearby pillar, cracked a smirk. But the tension remained thick.
Seraphine turned on Emilia, face flushed with rage. "This is not a joke. Cyrus betrayed us."
"I’m not surprised," Emilia said, arms crossed. "He was always... complicated."
Seraphine slammed her fist onto the table, making a few scattered figurines jump. "He will pay for this. I swear on my bloodline."
Cyrus entered the room just then, drawn by the rising voices. He looked hollowed out. Disheveled. Shame clung to him like smoke.
"I never told her everything," he began, voice rough. "She didn’t even drink from me."
"You gave her your body," Seraphine snapped. "That was more than enough."
"You don’t think she’d have found her way into our movements anyway? She has eyes everywhere. Witches who pretend to be loyal to you, Seraphine, but bend the knee when her shadow falls across their doorstep."
Luca rose then, cold steel in his voice. "That may be true. But what you did was reckless. Emotional."
Cyrus flinched.
Emilia stepped forward. "He regrets it. And we need every able body in this war."
"Not his," Luca growled.
Cyrus's eyes darted between them. "Let me help. Let me fight beside you. Let me earn it back."
"No," Seraphine said flatly.
"Absolutely not," Luca echoed.
Emilia said nothing. She simply stared at him with a look that was both pity and exhaustion. Cyrus turned away and left, the silence he left behind louder than any scream.

Meanwhile, in the smoldering remnants of the EastCity, Calista lay stretched across a velvet chaise in a room dimly lit with ember-laced candles. Her gown, a rich maroon silk, clung to her like liquid. A cut bloomed red near her collarbone, tended to by the healer-witch, Narissa.
The fire had cost them. Their outer coven was in ruins, charred bones still smoking. Two dozen witches lost. Calista had not wept. She had not screamed.
She had only grown quiet.
Now she sat with her sister witches: Cerys, the seer; Vyne, the bone-mender; and Isadora, who brewed poisons from shadow-root.
A scout entered, eyes wide, face pale. "We have confirmation. The fire was Seraphine's doing. The hunter Vael set it under direct command."
Calista smiled slowly. "Of course it was."
Cerys spoke, her blind eyes staring into nothing. "You knew."
"I suspected," Calista said. She rose from the chaise and approached the blackened window. Smoke curled beyond it. "Seraphine plays with fire."
Vyne leaned forward. "Do we retaliate now? Strike the Sanctuary?"
"No," Calista said, voice soft and dangerous. "We give them a moment to breathe. To think they are safe."
"And then?" Isadora asked.
Calista turned, a cruel smile playing on her lips. "We make them rot from within."
"I want their food poisoned," she said to Isadora. "Not to kill. Just to weaken. Hallucinations. Paranoia. Turn them against one another."
"A blend of Drelmoth root and nightwhisper pollen should do," Isadora murmured, already scribbling ingredients.
"And their water," Calista added. "Nothing fatal. But enough to erode the mind. To break their trust in each other."
Next, she summoned her dream-weavers. They would enter the sleeping minds of the Sanctuary’s warriors and leaders, planting seeds of fear, doubt, betrayal. Especially Seraphine.
"I want her to see me every time she closes her eyes. Let her think the gods are warning her."
She turned to Cerys. "What about their allies? The East Blades? The Highland packs?"
Cerys tilted her head. "A few messages in the right hands... We can convince them Seraphine seeks total control. That she will burn anyone not under her command."
Calista's eyes gleamed. "Good. Fan those flames."
Then came the most dangerous part.
"You want to send someone inside?" Vyne asked.
"Not someone," Calista said. "Me."
A ripple of shock moved through the room.
"You cannot risk it," Isadora warned. "Your blood—"
"My blood is what she wants. She thinks she can use it to seal her pathetic throne."
Calista stepped to the table and unfolded a map of the Sanctuary.
"There’s an old entrance beneath the west wing. Sealed off after the Blood War. Only those born before it know of it."
She tapped a point near the river bend.
"I will enter. I will curse their ground. Leave a trail of rot and sickness that their priests won’t understand."
"And if they catch you?" Cerys asked.
Calista smiled. A cruel, hungry thing.
"Then let them try."

Back at the Sanctuary, Emilia stood in the courtyard, watching as a group of scouts rode out. The fires had finally stopped burning, but the scars remained. Ash clung to the stones like guilt.
Luca joined her, sliding his hand into hers.
"Are you all right?" he asked.
"No," she said honestly. "But I will be."
They watched as Seraphine and Kith argued in low voices near the gates.
"Do you trust her?" Luca asked.
"I trust that she wants to win," Emilia replied.
He glanced sideways. "And Cyrus?"
She didn’t answer. Not immediately. Then: "He’s broken. But he’s not gone."
"He won't be in the war meetings. I won’t allow it."
Emilia nodded. She didn’t fight him on it.
From the tower above, a raven cried.
War was coming.
