Chapter 48 The Anniversary

Chapter 48 The Anniversary
POV: Aria

I sit where I first touched his tomb.

The Moonfall Crypt has been transformed. What was once a forgotten place of death and darkness is now a memorial. The stone is cleaned. The walls are marked with symbols honoring what happened here. The place where an ancient king woke. The place where everything changed.

It's been one year since Kael ascended.

Three hundred sixty-five days of leading the territories without him standing beside me. Three hundred sixty-five days of learning to make decisions alone. Three hundred sixty-five days of building a world that actually works.

But tonight I'm here where it started.

I whisper to the empty stone.

I miss you.

The words sound small in the darkness of the crypt. Small and useless and insufficient for what I'm actually feeling. Missing doesn't capture the weight of his absence. Missing doesn't explain the quiet moments when I reach through the bond and find only silence.

For a long moment, nothing happens.

The stone remains cold and dark. The crypt remains empty except for my grief.

Then golden light arcs across the sky above the crypt.

It spreads like paint across darkness. Like sunrise happening all at once. And the light begins to form words. Words written in pure energy. Words that only I can understand.

MISS YOU TOO

I laugh and cry at the same time.

His presence has learned how to reach me like this. Through the bond. Through the territories themselves. Through magic that's become part of the world now.

And then Shadow materializes.

The spectral wolf spirit walks out of the darkness like it's always been here. Its fur is ethereal and shifting. It glows with the same golden light that wrote his message. It approaches me slowly like it's afraid I might disappear.

I reach out and my fingers sink into Shadow's fur.

It's warm. Real. Solid in a way that shouldn't be possible for something made of pure magic. Shadow nuzzles against my hand and I feel him. I feel Kael's presence manifested into a form I can touch.

At least I have you, I murmur.

Shadow makes a sound that's not quite a howl. Not quite a whimper. Something that expresses what cannot be said in words.

I run my fingers through Shadow's ethereal fur and feel the magic moving beneath. Feel Kael's consciousness woven into this creature. He learned how to do this. Learned how to make himself present in a way that doesn't require him to abandon his responsibility to the territories.

This is their new normal.

Communication across distance and form. Words written in light. A wolf made of magic that carries his presence. It's not what I wanted. It's not what either of us planned. We should be together. He should be standing beside me. We should be building this world as partners instead of him supporting from everywhere and nowhere at once.

But he's here.

His love hasn't diminished. It's just changed shape.

Shadow lies down beside me and I lean against its ethereal form. My head rests on fur that shouldn't exist but does. My hand strokes through magic that feels like warmth. And for the first time in weeks, I don't feel completely alone.

Through the connection, I feel Kael's presence fully. Not muffled like usual. Not strained from trying to reach across distance. Just present. Just here with me in the way he can be now.

The territories are healing, his presence tells me. The true mate bonds are stabilizing. The new government is taking root. You're doing everything right

I know, I say. But it's hard without you

His presence wraps around me like arms.

I know that too, he says. But you're magnificent. You're building a world where no one has to suffer like we did. That's worth it

Is it, I ask. Is it worth the cost

The answer doesn't come immediately. When it does, it's layered with emotion that doesn't fit into simple words.

Yes, he says finally. Because they're safe. Because bonds won't be suppressed. Because love can exist freely now. Yes, beloved. It's worth it

Shadow presses against me more firmly and I feel the weight of Kael's presence through the connection. This is what they've become. This is the shape their love takes now. Not separate. Not the same. But connected in ways that are becoming their new normal.

We sit in the Moonfall Crypt together. Ancient king and True Keeper. Bonded still. Separated physically but not spiritually. In love in a way that doesn't require proximity or physical form.

It's enough.

It has to be enough.

Then Raven finds me.

She emerges from the darkness looking harried and urgent.

Aria, she says. The territories are asking for you. There's a problem

I stand up immediately.

Shadow fades back into the shadows like it was never there. But I still feel Kael's presence. Still feel the warmth of his consciousness woven into the territories.

What problem, I ask.

Raven takes a breath.

The neighboring kingdom has noticed our instability. The government changes. The bond revolution. They're gathering forces at the border. They think we're weak. They think they can take over while we're rebuilding

My blood goes cold.

We're not ready for war, I say. We're still establishing the new order. We don't have a military structure yet

I know, Raven says. But they're coming anyway. And we need to decide how to respond

Through the bond, I feel Kael's presence shift. Feel him focusing more fully on me. Feel him preparing to support me through whatever comes next.

This is what we built the new order for, his presence whispers. To face this together. You're not alone, Aria. You'll never be alone

And I realize that he's right.

I'm not leading the territories alone. I'm not facing threats alone. I'm leading with him beside me in spirit. With the territories behind me. With friends supporting me. With the entire pack magic infused with his consciousness and love.

We can do this.

Together.
