Chapter 48 The Kiss That Shouldn't Exist

Chapter 48 The Kiss That Shouldn't Exist
( Elara’s POV )

The storm broke at the same moment the truth did.

Lightning cracked across the blood-colored clouds overhead, throwing a harsh white shine over the ruins around us and jagged stone, toppled pillars, bones half-swallowed by the earth. Magic snapped in the air, sharp and metallic, tasting like old copper against my tongue.

Kyren stood in the center of it all, chest rising and falling too quickly, shadows rippling off him like smoke. Riven’s blade hovered at his throat. Silas held me at his side, fingers gripping my arm a shade too tightly. And Ashen, God's, Ashen had crouched on the ruined steps, his pupils blown wide and glowing molten gold.

The bond thrummed under my skin, painful, discordant, out of sync.

Because of the truth I had just said out loud.

“I felt all of you,” I whispered again, barely breathing. “Every pain. Every fear. Every desire. And the Devourer felt it too.”

Kyren’s eyes snapped to mine with razor focus. “Elara. You should have told us.”

Ashen growled low. “We could have shielded you. We should have shielded you.”

Riven didn’t move his blade from Kyren’s throat. “One problem at a time. Kyren tried to hide this from us. He knew the bond was destabilizing.”

Kyren bared his teeth. “Because I knew she’d blame herself, and because the second we told her, she would’ve tried to cut the bond.”

My breath punched out of me.

“Is that true?” Silas asked quietly. His voice was all calm, but his magic wasn’t and it curled around my ankles like smoke, protective and heavy.

I swallowed. “Maybe.”

Silas made a soft, furious sound.

The wind howled through the ruins, carrying dust and the faintest whisper of something ancient. Something hungry. I shivered.

Kyren stepped forward, ignoring Riven’s blade. “Elara. Look at me.”

I did.

And the world tilted.

His power swelled, not in a threatening way but in a way that felt like pressure against my lungs. The bond vibrated, a low hum that thrummed in my bones.

“I hid it because I was afraid,” he said. “Afraid you’d push us all away. Afraid you’d choose death over risking hurting us.”

Lightning flashed again. Thunder rolled.

Silas sucked in a sharp breath beside me. “You idiot,” he said to Kyren, voice soft. “You absolute idiot.”

Riven finally lowered the blade.

Ashen rose from the steps, silent and predatory. He stalked closer, the heat of him sinking into my skin before he even reached me.

“Tell us what you’re feeling now,” he said. “All of it.”

I tried.

I really did.

But the moment the bond opened inside me, the truth crashed too hard, too fast.

“Everything,” I gasped. “I feel everything.”

Their anger. Their fear. Their want. Their guilt.

And....

Oh God's.

Their desire.

Not buried. Not restrained. Not subtle.

Raw and molten.

It poured into me like lava flooding a broken vessel. I stumbled. Silas caught me instantly, an arm sliding around my waist.

“Elara,” he breathed, voice tight. “Focus on me. Breathe.”

But I couldn’t. They were too close. The air too charged. Their magic too restless.

Kyren’s. Wild and burning.

Riven’s. Sharp and possessive.

Silas’s. Gentle but insistent.

Ashen’s. Deep, ancient heat, coiling around me like a promise.

It was overwhelming.

Too much.

Too good.

“No,” I choked. “I can’t...”

Kyren reached me first.

His hand caught my jaw, tilting my face up toward him. “Let me ground you.”

“Don’t force it,” Riven growled, but even he didn’t pull Kyren back.

Kyren’s forehead pressed to mine, breaths mingling. “You’re not alone. You’re not drowning. We’re right here.”

The bond pulsed between us.

Something cracked inside me and a pressure releasing.

My knees buckled.

Silas and Ashen steadied me at the same time, their hands warm on my waist, my arms.

And then the bond snapped tight.

Not painful.

Not chaotic.

Aligned.

Like all four currents finally flowing in the same direction.

I felt their shock as clearly as my own.

“Elara,” Ashen whispered, voice hoarse. “What did you do?”

“I don’t know,” I breathed. “It just, clicked.”

Kyren’s fingers slid down my jaw, brushing my lips.

And gods help me…

I wanted.

Not politely. Not quietly.

Desperately.

Riven stepped close behind me, his breath hot at my ear. “Tell us what you want,” he murmured. “No more hiding.”

I turned my head slightly, and the brush of my cheek against his sent a flood of heat through the bond.

Their desire surged in answer and a tidal wave of need.

Kyren hissed softly.

Silas’s grip tightened.

Ashen’s magic flared.

I swallowed hard. “I, want...”

Kyren kissed me.

Hard.

Deep.

Like he’d been waiting his whole damn life.

My gasp melted into him. His hands framed my face, pulling me close enough that the world blurred into heat and lightning. The bond lit like wildfire.

And then...

Riven’s hands slid down my arms, slow, claiming.

Silas pressed a kiss to the side of my throat, soft but shaking.

Ashen’s breath hit the back of my neck. “Careful,” he warned. “If we touch her all at once...”

“Then she won’t fall apart,” Kyren growled against my mouth. “She’ll finally feel how wanted she is.”

I whimpered.

Actually whimpered.

Riven swore under his breath. “That sound is going to destroy us.”

Silas’s lips brushed my throat again, reverent. “You don’t have to choose between us,” he whispered. “Not tonight. Not ever.”

I pulled back, dizzy, breathless. “But the Devourer...”

Kyren cupped my cheek. “Can burn.”

Ashen’s fingers slid into my hair. “Let us be your anchor.”

Riven’s hands closed around my hips. “Let us hold you.”

Silas gently turned my face toward him. “Let us love you.”

The bond surged like a heartbeat.

One beat.

Four souls.

And me.

Lightning split the sky, and the ruins around us glowed with the answering flare of our magic.

I exhaled.

Then nodded.

“Show me,” I whispered.

All four of them released a breath like they’d been holding it for years.

The storm raged.

The bond deepened.

And the night finally bowed to us.
