The Doctor's Stand
The Doctor's Stand
Dr. Ryan Archer's POV
Amy Rodriguez's blood was still on my hands when I made the phone call that would either save her life or get us both killed.
"Elena? It's Ryan. I'm with Amy in the old mining caves. We have information that can bring down Marcus Daniels, but we need help getting it to the authorities."
"Ryan, where exactly are you? Jake Morrison just warned me that Marcus told him to burn down my office with me inside."
My stomach dropped. Elena was in immediate danger, and I was hidden underground like a coward while she faced Marcus alone.
"Elena, get out of town. Right now. Marcus has already killed dozens of people to protect his business. He won't hesitate to kill you too."
"I'm not running, Ryan. Three girls are about to be shipped away at midnight. If we don't stop Marcus tonight, Maria Rodriguez and two other teens are going to disappear forever."
I looked at Amy, who was listening to my chat with desperate hope in her eyes. This seventeen-year-old girl had been beaten, threatened, and nearly sold into slavery. The least I could do was find the strength to fight for her sister.
"Elena, what do you need from me?"
"Medical data. Documentation of abuse. Anything that shows Marcus's operation has been hurting girls for years."
I pulled out the digital recorder I'd been carrying for five years - the one filled with conversations I'd never had the courage to use. "Elena, I have recorded statements from Marcus about the trafficking operation. Medical records showing proof of abuse from dozens of victims. Financial records showing he's been paying me to stay quiet."
"You recorded Marcus confessing?"
"For five years, I've been documenting everything while telling myself I was too scared to move. Tonight, that recording might save lives."
Amy grabbed my arm. "Dr. Archer, does that mean you can prove what Mr. Daniels did to my sister and all the other girls?"
I nodded. "Amy, I have medical proof from every girl Marcus trafficked in the past five years. X-rays showing broken bones, blood tests showing drugs in their systems, photographs of injuries that could only come from abuse."
"Why didn't you turn this evidence in before?"
The question hit me like a physical blow. "Because I was a coward who cared more about protecting myself than protecting innocent children."
Elena's voice came through the phone: "Ryan, we don't have time for grief right now. Can you get that information to the FBI?"
"Where do I find the FBI?"
"Agent Sarah Kim is somewhere in town. She's been acting as a marine biologist for eight months."
Eight months. While I'd been treating trafficking victims and keeping silent, federal agents had been building a case. If I'd spoken up sooner, how many girls could have been saved? "Elena, I'm coming to help you."
"No. Stay with Amy and keep her safe. She's the only live witness we have."
"Elena, I can't let you face Marcus alone. Not after what happened to Sarah Mitchell."
The line went quiet. Then Elena said, "Ryan, what happened to Sarah Mitchell?"
I closed my eyes and told Elena the truth I'd been carrying for five years. " Sarah Mitchell came to me when she was sixteen and pregnant. She'd found Marcus's trafficking operation and wanted help escaping town. I made plans to drive her to Portland where she could have her baby safely and start a new life."
"What went wrong?" " Marcus found out about our plan. The night before we were meant to leave, Sarah's body was found at the bottom of the courthouse steps. The formal report said suicide, but I knew better."
Amy gasped. "Mr. Daniels killed Sarah Mitchell?" " He pushed her down those steps because she knew about the trafficking and I tried to help her escape. Then he made it clear that anyone else who tried to help would end up the same way."
Elena's voice was cold with anger. "Ryan, Marcus Daniels has been using Sarah's death to control you for five years."
"It worked. I was too scared to help anyone else after that."
"But you're helping now."
I looked at Amy Rodriguez sitting beside me in the tunnel, surrounded by the things of dead girls. She was the same age Sarah Mitchell had been when Marcus killed her.
"Elena, I couldn't save Sarah. But maybe I can save Amy's sister and the other girls."
"What changed your mind?"
"Amy did. When she came to my office today and told me about Maria, I realized I had a choice. I could keep being the coward who lets innocent girls die, or I could finally do what Sarah Mitchell would have wanted me to do five years ago."
Elena's voice relaxed. "Ryan, Sarah's death wasn't your fault."
"Yes, it was. If I'd been braver, if I'd gone to the police instead of trying to handle it alone, she might still be alive."
"And if you'd done that, Marcus would have killed you both and kept trafficking girls anyway. Ryan, you kept detailed proof for five years. That proof is going to bring Marcus down."
I pulled out my medical bag and showed Amy the recorder, the pictures, and the files I'd been hiding.
"Amy, this evidence shows that Marcus Daniels has been trafficking girls through Moonfall Bay for twenty years. Your testimony combined with this paperwork can send him to prison forever."
"Will it save my sister?"
"If we can get it to the right people in time."
My phone buzzed with a text message from an unknown number: "Dr. Archer - This is Agent Sarah Kim, FBI. I know you're with Amy Rodriguez. Meet me at the tower in one hour. Come alone."
I showed the message to Amy. "The FBI wants to meet with me."
"Dr. Archer, what if it's a trap? What if Mr. Daniels is claiming to be the FBI agent?"
I hadn't thought of that. Marcus was smart enough to intercept texts and desperate enough to try anything.
"Amy, I need you to stay hidden while I check this out."
"No way. If you're going into a trap, I'm not letting you go alone."
"Amy, you're seventeen years old and hurt. You should be hiding, not fighting."
"Dr. Archer, I'm seventeen years old and angry. Mr. Daniels beat me up, kidnapped my sister, and plans to sell her to people who will hurt her. I'm done hiding."
I stared at this brave girl who'd survived torture and was still willing to fight for her sister. She reminded me of Sarah Mitchell - full of courage and drive despite the danger.
"Amy, if we do this, there's no going back. Marcus will do anything to stop us from testifying."
"Good. I want him to know I'm coming for him."
I gathered my proof and helped Amy to her feet. "Amy, promise me something. If this goes wrong tonight, if something happens to me, make sure this proof gets to Elena Santos or Agent Kim."
"Nothing's going to happen to you, Dr. Archer."
"How can you be sure?"
Amy smiled despite her bruises. "Because for the first time in five years, you're not facing Marcus Daniels alone. You've got Elena Santos, Deputy Morrison, and me. And we're all really angry about what he's done to young girls."
As we climbed out of the tunnels, I thought about Sarah Mitchell and all the other girls I'd failed to save. Tonight, I had a chance to make their deaths mean something.
"Amy," I said as we headed toward the tower, "I need you to know something. Whatever happens tonight, helping you was the first brave thing I've done in five years. Thank you for giving me the chance to finally do what's right."
"Dr. Archer, thank you for not giving up on my sister."
We walked through the dark streets of Moonfall Bay, carrying proof that could destroy Marcus Daniels and save three girls from a fate worse than death.
For the first time in five years, I wasn't running from the truth. I was walking toward it with a witness who trusted me and proof that could change everything.
