Chapter 72 Chapter Seventy-two
Here,” Severin said to Ivy, handing her a cup of tea. She turned her head away, sticking her nose up at it. He raised a brow.
“Aren't you hungry?”
His question was met with silence which was to be expected. The poor girl had lost her family and her kingdom in one night. He caught himself looking at her slender neck for a tad too long. He looked away quickly. Not now. Maybe not even ever.
Severin had brought them to his apartment on the other side of the Ridge. She would be safe here at least.
“Look, I know you don't trust me but I wouldn't go through all this kind of trouble if I didn't have any good intentions.”
“I can't stay here,” she said. “I'm the heir to the throne. Who's going to rule the Kingdom then?”
“Amara was the one who ordered the murder. If I know her well, she's already sitting on the throne giving more orders to have you found.”
The princess's face scrunched up in confusion. “How do you even know all this?”
Because I'm her personal assassin, he thought.
Severin couldn't say that though so instead he said, “I know a lot of things.”
“Of course you do.”she muttered.
He placed the cup of tea down in front of her. “In case you change your mind.”
“There's a spare room, just by the end of the corridor. You can use it to bathe and change. I'll be back soon.”
“You're leaving?” She said, her brows raised.
“Yes. There's something I need to take care of first.”
“What's that? You can't just leave me here.”
“Nothing will happen to you. You're safe here, princess. The security in this place is first class. No one can get in.”
“Why would a vampire even need a security system?”
“I installed it for you, to ease your mind.”
He checked the time on his watch. Amara would have his head if he was late. “Stay put. I'll be back.”
It seemed like the entirety of Diamond Ridge had been thrown into pandemonium. Shortly after the King and Queen died, a curfew was implemented. Only guards patrolled the streets now, oblivious to his presence. Severin could easily walk in shadows, blending in with the darkness, an ability most vampires had but not all.
The Castle was deserted when he arrived, no sign of the celebration that was taking place about an hour ago. He slipped into the throneroom. Amara was there like he predicted but she wasn't sitting on the throne. She walked around it, trailing her fingers over the margin of the throne.
“Severin,” she said, her voice smooth like silk. “You missed the party.”
“I was watching. I saw it all. How did you do that?”
“I have a new pet, since you've disappointed me time and time again.”
“I've been doing my best…”
Amara raised a hand, cutting his words off. She walked down the dais, slowly and he knew it was just to mess with him. She was in a purple gown that hugged her curves sinfully, her breasts near spilling out of the corset, with a slit in front of her right thigh.
She grabbed his chin. “Do you know the consequence of lying to me, Severin?”
He nodded. Severin knew. He knew all too well.
“Good. You're lucky, I like you. You would've been dead by now.”
He had been lucky. Severin had been the first to be tasked with killing the Royal family. Except he had stumbled upon the princess’s bathhouse and hadn't been able to. She looked so pure, so innocent, so beautiful. He'd wanted her immediately. So it was the same excuse everyday; ‘I didn't have time today’, ‘I overslept’ , ‘The layout of the palace is very confusing’. Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months and the more he became entangled with the princess, the harder it was to kill her. Amara had gotten tired of his excuses and found someone else.
Her hand moved down to his throat and stayed there. Severin had a visceral recollection of the many nights she had held his throat like that, riding him, her face contorted in pleasure.
“I've missed you,” she said, her sharp nails going farther down his body.
He took a step back quickly and Amara's face morphed into anger. He held his breath hoping she wouldn't obliterate his guts.
“Where's the princess?”
“I don't know.”
“Liar. She just magically disappeared from the castle on the night you know I planned to murder her?”
He shrugged. “You're the one who practices magic. You tell me.”
That retort earned him a slap.
“Have you forgotten who you're talking to? Without me, you're nothing. You would have been dead. I gave you your immortal life and this is how you repay me?”
Severin gritted his teeth. As long as he lived, Amara would never stop reminding him of his debt to her. He had been human once, one of the mineworkers who got the Diamond from the ground. He couldn't remember much after that. He was sure he had died but then he woke up, feeling stronger than he ever had in years with Amara standing over him, telling him he was now a vampire.
He did everything she asked after that. Gave her everything. His time, his body, his life. Now he was just tired.
Severin said nothing.
Amara's smile was pure venom. “Fine. Do what you want. Keep your little princess hidden. But if I find her, I'll make it slow and I'll make it painful. For you and for her “
