Chapter 149 Judgement

Chapter 149 Judgement
Lira pov

"No?" Selene's eyebrows rose. "Would you deny justice to the murdered?"

"I would deny more violence." Lira stepped between Selene and the cell. "My mother died in violence. My father died in violence. Hundreds of Silvermoon wolves died in violence. I won't perpetuate that cycle."

"This isn't your decision alone," Selene said coldly. "The council has authority"

"The council has authority over their own territories." Lira's voice hardened with alpha command. "This is Silvermoon land. These are Silvermoon crimes. And I am the recognized Luna of Silvermoon. My judgment stands."

The air crackled with tension. Two ancient powers—Luna and Elder—locked in a battle of wills.

Finally, Selene inclined her head fractionally. "Very well. Your judgment stands. But know this, young Luna—mercy has consequences. Some will see it as weakness."

"Let them." Lira didn't back down. "I'd rather be seen as weak for choosing mercy than strong for choosing more death."

Selene studied her for a long moment. "You're more like your mother than you know. Vera made the same choice once, sparing an alpha who'd attacked Silvermoon borders. She believed in redemption."

"What happened to that alpha?" I asked.

"He became her greatest ally." Selene's expression softened almost imperceptibly. "Vera was wise enough to know that mercy, properly applied, can be the strongest weapon of all."

She turned to Elias. "You've been granted a gift you don't deserve. Don't waste it."

After Selene left, we made arrangements for Elias's departure. Two guards would escort him to the Northlands border and leave him there—no supplies, no weapons, nothing but the clothes on his back.

"One more thing," Lira said as the guards prepared to take him. "The wolves you bound with blood magic. I'll free them. All of them. Whatever pain it causes me, I'll undo what you did."

Elias looked at her with something that might have been respect. "You really mean that."

"I do."

"You're a fool."

"You've said that before." She smiled thinly. "But I'm a fool who's taking everything you tried to build and turning it into something better. I'd rather be a merciful fool than a cruel tyrant."

The guards led him away. I watched until he disappeared up the stairs, then turned to Lira.

"That took courage."

"That took stupidity," she countered. "Half the wolves up there probably think I'm weak for not executing him."

"Let them think that." I pulled her close. "You know the truth. I know the truth. You made the choice that lets you sleep at night."

"I hope so." She leaned into me. "Because now comes the hard part."

"What's harder than showing mercy to your mother's killer?"

"Claiming the throne I never wanted." She pulled back, looking up at me. "Kael, I need to address both packs. Today. Before doubts set in."

An hour later, every wolf from both Darkfang and Silvermoon gathered in the restored great hall.

I stood to the side as Lira took her place at the center of the room—not on the throne, I noticed, but before it.

"I am Lira Ashborne," she began, her voice carrying to every corner. "Daughter of Vera Ashborne, rightful heir to Silvermoon. Yesterday, I reclaimed my birthright through combat and judgment. Today, I stand before you to make the most important decision of my life."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Nicolas stood near the front, his expression curious.

"My mother died protecting this pack," Lira continued. "My father died trying to save us. Hundreds of Silvermoon wolves died in a massacre orchestrated by greed and fear. For years, this territory has suffered under corruption and stolen leadership."

She paused, letting her words sink in. "I could rule Silvermoon. By blood, by right, by conquest—it's mine to claim. But I stand here today to tell you that I won't."

Shocked silence."What?" Nicolas stepped forward. "Lira, what are you talking about?"

She turned to him, and I saw tears in her eyes. "You protected my father's memory when no one else would. You tracked my family's enemies for years, waiting for justice. You've earned the Silvermoon throne more than I ever could by blood alone."

Understanding dawned on Nicolas's face. "No. Lira, this is your"

"This is my choice." She cut him off gently. "Uncle Nicolas, I'm not abandoning Silvermoon. I'm ensuring it has the leader it deserves. My place is with Darkfang, with Kael, with my daughter. But your place—your place is here, leading the pack my father loved, honoring the wolves who died, rebuilding what was destroyed."

She knelt before him—a Luna before her chosen alpha. "Will you accept this responsibility? Will you lead Silvermoon back to greatness?"

Nicolas's hands shook as he reached down, lifting her to her feet. "You honor me beyond words."

"You've honored my family for decades." She smiled through tears. "This is simply returning the favor."

She turned back to the assembled wolves. "I propose an alliance between Darkfang and Silvermoon. Sister packs under unified banner. We protect each other, support each other, grow stronger together. No more territory wars. No more bloodshed between us."

"And if other packs challenge this?" an older Silvermoon wolf called out.

"Then they challenge both of us," I said, stepping forward to stand beside Lira. "Darkfang and Silvermoon stand together. That's not a suggestion. It's a promise."

The wolves erupted—some in approval, some in concern, all in shock at the unprecedented declaration.

Selene Darkmoon rose from where she'd been observing. "The supernatural council will need to formally recognize this arrangement."

"Then recognize it," Lira said firmly. "Because it's happening regardless of approval. I've reclaimed my birthright. Now I'm exercising my right to delegate leadership to someone worthy."

Selene studied her, then Nicolas, then nodded slowly. "It's... unconventional. But not without precedent. The council will deliberate."

"You do that." Lira's exhaustion was starting to show, but her voice remained strong. "In the meantime, Silvermoon has work to do. Land to heal. Wolves to free from blood magic. A future to build."

She swayed slightly. I caught her immediately.

"Speech is over," I announced to the room. "Your Luna needs rest."

As I guided her toward the stairs, Nicolas caught up to us. “Thank you," he said quietly. "For trusting me with this."

"Thank you," Lira replied, "for giving me a choice. For showing me I don't have to rule everything I can claim by right."

Back in the alpha chambers, Lira finally collapsed. "I need to go home," she whispered. "To Zara. I need to hold my daughter."

"Tomorrow," I promised. "Tonight, you rest. Tomorrow, we ride for Darkfang."

"And then?"

"And then you teach our daughter what you just showed everyone today—that the strongest leaders are the ones who know when to step back and trust others."

She smiled faintly. "Think she'll understand?"

"She's your daughter." I kissed her forehead. "She'll understand perfectly."

As Lira drifted off to sleep, I stood watch over her.
