Chapter 133 Kael's Declaration

Chapter 133 Kael's Declaration
Lira pov
I woke to shouting from the main hall. Not angry shouting, urgent shouting, the kind that meant something important was happening. I stumbled out of bed, still exhausted but too curious to ignore it.
Kael stood in the center of the hall. Around him, at least fifty wolves I didn't recognize. And in front of them, three council ambassadors.
Not Freya or Sasha. Different ones wearing council insignias.
"What's happening?" I pushed through the crowd to Kael's side.
"They're demanding we appear before the full council." He didn't look away from the ambassadors. "Formal trial of public judgment. Immediate compliance required."
"Or what?" I challenged the ambassadors. "You send more assassins? More weapons? More death?"
The lead ambassador stepped forward, he was aged. Grey bearded and cold-eyed. "Or we declare both of you rogue." His voice was formal. "Declare the Darkfang pack as hostile territory and authorize any pack to claim these lands through conquest."
"You'd destroy an entire pack?" I demanded. "Hundreds of innocent wolves? Because you fear me?"
"We don't fear you." He corrected. "We fear what you represent. Chaos. Rebellion, the breakdown of order that's kept peace for generations."
"Order built on genocide." Kael's voice was lethal. "Peace bought with Moonblood blood. That's what you're protecting."
"We're protecting stability." Another ambassador spoke. "Preventing the wars that nearly destroyed all werewolf kinds, your mate threatens that stability."
"My mate threatens tyrants." Kael stepped in front of me. "Threatens corruption, threatens a council that operates through fear and murder. If that's your definition of stability, burn it down."
The hall went silent. Every wolf holding their breath.
"Alpha Kael." The lead ambassador's tone hardened. "You're committing treason. Speaking against lawful council authority. Defending a known rogue Luna, do you understand the consequences?"
"Completely." He didn't back down. "And I don't care. My mate is the rightful Silvermoon heir. The last Moonblood, the wolf who broke a curse your council couldn't, she is not a rogue. She's revolutionary and I stand with her."
"Even if it costs you everything?" The female ambassador challenged. "Your territory? Your pack? Your life?"
"Especially then." He turned to address the assembled crowd. "The council wants me to denounce my mate. To declare her rogue, to help them eliminate the last Moonblood. And I'm here to say—I refuse."
The pack murmured. "Luna Lira Ashborne is my mate." He continued. "My Luna, my equal partner in leadership. And she has done nothing wrong. She defended herself, she broke a curse, she healed the sick, she fought assassins the council sent. Every action was justified and every choice was right."
"That's not for you to decide." The lead ambassador said. "The council determines right and wrong. Not individual alphas."
"Then the council is wrong." Kael's voice rolled through the hall. "And I'm done pretending otherwise, done bowing to corrupt authority. Done accepting that might make right."
"You're declaring war." The ambassador said flatly. "On the entire council, on every pack that supports them. On the established order itself."
"No." Kael smiled coldly. "I'm declaring independence. Darkfang pack no longer recognizes council authority, we govern ourselves, protect ourselves and make our own laws. Starting now."
Chaos erupted. The council ambassadors shouting. The pack members arguing. Everyone is trying to talk at once.
"Silence!" I shouted."Let him finish."
Kael nodded gratefully. "The council has ruled through fear for too long, has committed atrocities in the name of stability, has murdered anyone who challenged their power. That ends today. Darkfang stands as free territory and any pack that wants freedom is welcome to join us."
"You can't do this." The female ambassador's voice shook. "You're one pack. One alpha and Luna. The council has hundreds of packs. Thousands of warriors, you will be destroyed."
"Maybe." Kael admitted. "But we'll be destroyed as free wolves, not slaves or prisoners or victims of council tyranny. That's worth dying for."
"This is madness." The lead ambassador shook his head. "You're throwing away everything for a mate. For a rogue Luna who'll bring nothing but destruction."
"She's brought hope." Thomas stepped forward. "She's brought healing. She's brought justice. That's more than the council has given us in decades."
"She's brought death!" The ambassador countered. "Ten wolves died yesterday because of her choices!"
"Ten wolves died defending their Luna from assassination." Aria joined Thomas. "From assassins the council sent, don’t twist their sacrifice into her fault."
"She led them into danger!" The ambassador insisted.
"She led us to freedom." The Elder surprised everyone by speaking. "Led us to believe change is possible. That's what leaders do, they inspire. They challenge and they demand better."
I stared at the elder. "You're defending me?"
"I'm defending the truth." He said gruffly. "And the truth is, the council fears you because you're effective. Because you challenge their narrative. Because you refuse to die quietly like a good little Moonblood."
The pack started murmuring agreement.
"Enough debate." The lead ambassador pulled out a formal scroll. "By order of the Regional Supernatural Council, Alpha Kael Thorn and Luna Lira Ashborne are hereby summoned to formal trial. Failure to appear within seven days results in automatic rogue status. Territory forfeiture. And authorized elimination by any means necessary."
He dropped the scroll at our feet. "Seven days. Choose wisely."
They left as the pack erupted in arguments again.
"We can't go." Someone shouted. "It's obviously a trap!"
"But if we don't, we're rogues!" Another countered. "They'll destroy us!"
"Let them try!" A third voice. "We've beaten them before!"
"At terrible cost!" The arguments continued.
"Everyone stop!" I picked up the scroll to read the formal language. "They're giving us a choice. Surrender to their judgment or face war, there is no good option."
"Then we pick the option that preserves our dignity." Kael said. "We refuse, we fight and prove we're not afraid of their threats."
"Even if it means war?" I asked. "Even if it means losing everything?"
"We've already lost everything." He touched my face. "We lost the moment we challenged them. Now we just decide whether to lose on our feet or on our knees. I vote feet."
"Kael." I grabbed his hands. "Thank you for what you said. For standing with me, for declaring independence rather than surrendering me."
"I meant every word." He pulled me close. "You're not just my mate. You're my Luna, partner. My equal. And I'll stand with you against anything the Council included."
"Even if we lose?" I whispered.
"Especially if we lose." He kissed my forehead. "Because then we lose together as we promised."
I wanted to cry, wanted to collapse into his arms. I wanted to let the fear and exhaustion take over.
But the pack was watching, waiting for direction."We have seven days." I addressed them. "Seven days to prepare, to fortify and try to build alliances, we need to get ready for war."
"Or seven days to run." Someone suggested. "Make them chase us."
