Chapter 81 Shadows of doubt
Chapter 81 Shadows of doubt
Morgana's Sanctum — Night
Morgana stood before the fireplace, flames casting dancing shadows across her face. She hadn't seen Kael in two days, and that worried her more than she cared to admit.
Her son was powerful, skilled, and loyal. But he was also curious. And curiosity, she knew from painful experience, could be dangerous.
"He went to the border crossing," one of her witches reported, entering the chamber with a bow. "Alone. He met with the Moonborn and Darion Varex."
Morgana's hands clenched into fists. "How long?"
"Nearly an hour, my lady. They talked, then separated peacefully."
"Peacefully," Morgana repeated, her voice dangerously soft. "And you didn't think to inform me while this was happening?"
The witch paled. "We thought we assumed you knew"
"Get out!!" Morgana commanded, her magic crackling in the air around her. "Now."
The witch fled.
Morgana turned back to the fire, her mind racing. They were trying to turn him. Trying to fill his head with lies and half-truths, trying to make him question everything she'd taught him.
She'd raised Kael to be strong, to be loyal, to understand that the Varex were their enemies. That Aldric's abandonment, Seraphina's murder all of it demanded justice. Demanded vengeance.
But Kael had his father's eyes. His father's heart.
And hearts could be swayed.
"Mother?"
Morgana turned to find Kael standing in the doorway, his expression guarded.
"Where have you been?" she asked, keeping her voice carefully neutral.
"Scouting," Kael replied. "Checking the Varex defenses, looking for weaknesses."
It wasn't technically a lie, Morgana knew. But it wasn't the whole truth either.
"Alone?" she pressed.
Kael hesitated, just for a fraction of a second. "Yes."
"Kael." Morgana moved toward him, her voice softening. "You can tell me anything. You know that, don't you?"
"I know," Kael said, but he wouldn't meet her eyes.
Morgana studied her son the man she'd raised, protected, loved with everything she had. The only good thing to come from her relationship with Aldric.
"They're trying to get to you," she said quietly. "The Varex. They'll say anything, do anything, to make you doubt me. To make you doubt our cause."
"I know," Kael repeated, and this time there was an edge to his voice.
"Do you?" Morgana challenged. "Because if you're meeting with them in secret, if you're listening to their lies"
"I met with Darion Varex," Kael admitted, his voice cutting through hers. "And the Moonborn. At the border crossing."
Morgana's breath caught. Even though she'd just been told as much, hearing it from Kael's own lips felt like betrayal.
"Why?" The word came out as barely a whisper.
"Because I wanted to look him in the eye," Kael said, his amber eyes finally meeting hers. "My brother. I wanted to see what kind of man he was. To understand who we're fighting."
"And what did you learn?" Morgana asked, her voice tight.
"That he's not what I expected," Kael admitted. "He's not arrogant. He's not cruel. He actually seemed to care about what happened to you. To Seraphina."
"Of course he seemed that way," Morgana said bitterly. "That's what they do, Kael. They manipulate. They deceive. Aldric seemed loving too, once upon a time. And then he abandoned me."
"I know the story," Kael said quietly. "You've told me a thousand times."
"Then why are you questioning it now?"
"I'm not questioning it," Kael said, frustration bleeding into his voice. "I'm just... trying to understand all sides of it."
"There are no 'sides' to this," Morgana snapped. "There's only the truth. Aldric left us. His son killed Seraphina. They destroyed our family. Everything else is just noise designed to confuse you."
Kael was silent for a long moment. When he spoke again, his voice was careful. "They want to talk to me again. Tomorrow night. They said they want to tell me the whole story. Not just their version all of it. The truth."
"And you believe they'll actually tell you the truth?" Morgana asked incredulously.
"I believe I should at least listen," Kael replied. "Make my own judgment."
"You've already made your judgment," Morgana said, her voice rising. "You chose me. You chose justice. You chose to fight alongside me to avenge everything they took from us."
"I did choose you," Kael said firmly. "And I still choose you. But that doesn't mean I can't hear what they have to say."
"It's exactly what it means!" Morgana's magic flared, making the flames in the fireplace roar higher. "The moment you start listening to them, the moment you let their poison into your mind, you've already lost. They'll twist everything, Kael. They'll make you doubt me. Doubt yourself. Doubt everything we're fighting for."
"I won't let them," Kael insisted.
"You can't control it," Morgana said, and there was
genuine fear in her voice now. "I've seen what the Varex can do. How they charm, how they manipulate. Your father was the same way. He made me believe we had a future.
Made me believe he loved me. And then he walked away like I meant nothing."
"I'm not my father," Kael said quietly.
"No," Morgana agreed, moving closer to him. "You're better than him. Stronger. More loyal. But you're still his son. You have his blood. His weaknesses." She placed her hand on his cheek.
"And they know that. They'll use it against you."
Kael's jaw clenched. "What do you want me to do? Refuse to meet with them?"
"Yes," Morgana said without hesitation. "That's exactly what I want. Stay away from them, Kael. Don't give them the chance to corrupt you."
"And if I don't?" Kael asked, and there was challenge in his voice. "If I go anyway?"
Morgana's eyes hardened. "Then you're choosing them over me. And I won't be able to protect you from the consequences of that choice."
The threat hung in the air between them.
Kael stared at his mother the woman who'd raised him, taught him, loved him and felt something crack inside his chest.
"I need to think," he said finally, pulling away from her touch. "I need... time."
"We don't have time," Morgana said. "The attack is coming soon. I need to know where you stand, Kael. With me, or against me."
"I'm with you," Kael said, but the words felt hollow even as he spoke them. "I've always been with you."
"Then prove it," Morgana said coldly. "Don't meet with
them tomorrow. Show me your loyalty is real."
Kael looked at her for a long moment, something like pain flickering in his amber eyes.
Then he turned and walked away without answering.
Morgana watched him go, her heart heavy with dread.
She was losing him. She could feel it. The Varex were pulling him away, bit by bit, just like Aldric had pulled away from her all those years ago.
And she couldn't let that happen.
Not again.
Not ever again
Kael sat in the darkness of his room, his mind churning.
Everything his mother had said made sense. The Varex were dangerous. They could be manipulative. And his father had abandoned them.
But Darion's eyes when he'd looked at Kael... there had been genuine pain there. Genuine regret. Not the cold calculation of someone trying to deceive.
And the Moonborn Ava she'd spoken with such conviction. Such certainty that there was more to the story than what Kael had been told.
Could his mother be lying to him?
No. Impossible. She wouldn't. She'd given up
everything for him. Sacrificed everything to keep him safe and strong.
But what if she wasn't lying, exactly? What if she just... didn't know the whole truth herself?
Kael pressed his palms against his eyes, frustration mounting.
He didn't know what to believe anymore. Didn't know who to trust.
All he knew was that tomorrow night, he had a choice to make.
Meet with Darion and Ava. Hear their version of events. Risk his mother's wrath and possibly his own certainty about everything he'd ever known.
Or stay away. Prove his loyalty. Keep fighting the war his mother had spent centuries preparing for.
One path was safe, familiar even expected.
The other was dangerous and very unknown, extremely terrifying.
But Kael couldn't shake the feeling that the truth the real truth lay somewhere in that danger.
And he had to know.
He had to.
