Chapter 76 The awakening

Chapter 76 The awakening

The Varex Estate — Medical Center

Ava's consciousness floated in darkness, suspended between waking and sleeping, between life and something else entirely.

She'd been fighting for what felt like an eternity. Fighting the pull of the void. Fighting the whispers that told her to let go, to rest, to stop struggling against the inevitable.

But she couldn't stop.
Because every time she considered surrendering, she heard them.

Lucian's voice, steady and desperate. "Come back to us."

Rhyssa's howl echoing through the darkness. "We need you."

Darion's broken whisper. "Don't leave us."

And beneath it all, Mirena's gentle guidance. "Channel it, child. Everything. Your grief, your rage, your love."
Ava had been trying. God, she'd been trying so hard.
But the darkness was so vast, so complete, and she was so tired.

How much longer can I keep this up?

Then, like a crack of lightning in the void, something changed.

A pulse of silver light erupted from somewhere deep inside her chest. It was small at first, barely a flicker, but then it grew. Spreading outward like roots breaking through stone, reaching toward something she couldn't see but could feel.

Her ancestors. The people she had never met but somehow had the biggest influence in changing her life.

They were there, in the darkness with her. She couldn't see their faces, couldn't hear their voices clearly, but she felt their presence surrounding her like a protective embrace.
You are not alone, they seemed to say. You have never been alone.

The silver light exploded outward, shattering the darkness.

And Ava gasped, her eyes flying open.
Lucian had fallen asleep in the chair beside her bed, his hand still wrapped around hers, his head resting on his other arm.

He woke instantly when her fingers twitched in his grip.
"Ava?" His voice was hoarse, disbelieving.
Her brown eyes her normal, beautiful brown eyes blinked slowly, focusing on his face with effort.

"Lucian," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Relief crashed over him so powerfully it nearly brought him to his knees.
"Oh thank God. Thank God." He stood quickly, leaning over her. "How do you feel? Are you in pain? Should I get the healers??"

"I'm okay," Ava interrupted softly, though her voice was weak. "Just... tired and I feel weak.."

"You've been unconscious for five days," Lucian said, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "We thought..I thought.."

He stopped, unable to finish the sentence.
His heart ached.
Ava's expression softened despite her exhaustion.

"I'm here. I'm okay."
Lucian wanted to argue that she wasn't okay, that
she'd nearly died, that she'd pushed herself too far.

But the words stuck in his throat, replaced by overwhelming gratitude that she was awake, that she was back. He held himself back.

"I need to tell the others," he said. "They'll want to know."
"Wait." Ava's grip on his hand tightened slightly. "Before you do... what happened? With Morgana? With Lyra?"

"The curse is broken," Lucian assured her. "Lyra's alive. Changed, but alive. And Morgana..." His expression darkened. "She escaped and suddenly vanished the moment your power surged."

Ava closed her eyes briefly, processing this. "So it's not over."
"No," Lucian admitted. "It's not over. But you saved them, Ava. You saved all of us."
"For now," Ava murmured.

Before Lucian could respond, the door burst open and Rhyssa rushed in, her amber eyes wide with hope and fear.
"Is it true? Is she.." She stopped when she saw Ava's open eyes. "Ava!"

Rhyssa was at the bedside in seconds, tears streaming down her face. "You're awake. You're actually awake."

"Hey," Ava said with a weak smile. "Miss me?"
Rhyssa laughed through her tears. "You have no idea."
Within minutes, the room filled with people. Aria, Darion, Selene, Kira all of them drawn by the news that their Moonborn had finally woken.

Selene approached the bed, her expression carefully controlled but her eyes betraying her relief. "How do you feel? Any pain? Disorientation?"

"I feel like I fought a war inside my own head," Ava admitted. "But I'm here."

"Your power surge was... unprecedented," Selene said carefully. "You channeled more energy than any
Moonborn I've ever witnessed. It's a miracle you survived."

"It wasn't just me," Ava said quietly. "The ancestors... they were there. They helped me."
Selene nodded slowly. "The Lunaris bloodline is strong. They wouldn't let you fall."

"What do we do now?" Ava asked, looking around at the faces gathered in the room. "Morgana's still out there. And I can feel it something's coming. Something worse."

The room fell silent, everyone exchanging troubled glances.
"We prepare," Lucian said finally. "We train. We fortify. And we make sure that when she comes back, we're ready."

Ava nodded, though exhaustion was already pulling at her again. "Then we'd better start soon."
"Rest first," Selene commanded gently. "You can't lead if you can't stand."

Ava wanted to argue, but her body was already betraying her, her eyelids growing heavy.
"Okay," she whispered. "Just... don't let me sleep too long."

"We won't," Lucian promised, his hand still holding hers.

As Ava drifted back into sleep this time natural,
healing sleep the others filed out quietly.

But Lucian remained, keeping watch.
Because he'd almost lost her more than just once. And it scared him
And he'd be damned if he let it happen again.
