Chapter 99 I Remember
Chapter 99 I Remember
The mountain had grown unnaturally quiet. No one had given the order to stop fighting. The battle had simply...paused. Even the enemy stood motionless among the shattered trees, their hollow masks turned toward the sanctuary as though they were listening for something only they could hear. Corvin stood near the broken entrance, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword. He had long since lost track of how many times he had looked toward the chamber where Rowan had disappeared. Every time... It was empty.
Jess watched him from across the room.
"He hasn't moved."
Malric followed her gaze.
"He doesn't think she'll come back if he isn't here."
Jess's heart ached.
She understood that feeling better than she wanted to admit. She slipped her fingers into Malric's hand without thinking. He looked down, surprised only for a moment before gently squeezing her hand. Neither of them let go. Across the sanctuary, Taryn finished checking on the last of the wounded wolves. Several of the younger members of the pack looked toward her instead of Fenrir now, waiting for instructions. It still felt strange. She wasn't sure it ever wouldn't.
Fenrir caught her watching them and smiled.
"They already know."
She frowned.
"Know what?"
"Who they'll follow."
"I've never wanted to replace you."
"You won't."
His voice was calm.
"You'll become something better."
Before Taryn could answer, Fenrir's ears lifted.
The smile disappeared.
"He moved."
Every head turned toward the forest. The figure standing among the trees had begun walking again. He didn't hurry.
He didn't need to. Each step carried the same quiet certainty that had settled over the mountain since his arrival.
Caelan slowly closed his eyes.
"I was hoping there would be more time."
Corvin looked at him.
"You know him."
"I remember him."
"Who is he?"
Caelan didn't answer immediately.
His gaze remained fixed on the approaching figure.
"When the world was still young..."
he said quietly,
"...there were very few beings capable of ending it."
A cold breeze drifted through the broken sanctuary.
"He is one of them."
No one spoke again. The figure reached the edge of the clearing. He stopped. For several long moments he simply stood there, studying the sanctuary. Studying them. Then his eyes lifted.
They settled on the chamber where Rowan had disappeared.
"I know you're awake."
His voice wasn't loud. It didn't have to be. Every stone in the sanctuary seemed to carry the words.
"You've hidden long enough."
Corvin stepped forward.
"You're not taking her."
The stranger's attention shifted to him. For the first time, he smiled.
"You must be Corvin."
Corvin's grip tightened.
"I know who you are."
"I doubt that."
"No."
The stranger nodded thoughtfully.
"You know the man she loves."
His smile faded.
"You don't know what loving her will cost."
Before Corvin could answer, the mountain trembled. Not from outside. From beneath them.
A warm light spread across the cracks in the sanctuary floor, weaving through the ancient stone like streams of liquid gold.
Jess felt it first. Her breath caught.
"She's coming back."
Malric looked toward the chamber. The doors that had remained sealed since Rowan vanished slowly began to open. No one moved. The light grew brighter. Corvin took one step forward.
Then another.
"Rowan?"
Silence answered him. A figure emerged from the light. She looked exactly the same. The same dark hair. The same tired eyes. The same woman who had walked into his life months ago. Yet something had changed. Not her appearance. Her peace. For the first time since Corvin had known her, Rowan wasn't carrying the weight of questions she couldn't answer. She looked at each of them in turn.
At Jess.
At Malric.
At Taryn.
At Fenrir.
At Lyra.
Finally...
She looked at Corvin.
Tears filled her eyes. Without saying a word, she crossed the distance between them and threw her arms around him.
Corvin held her as though letting go would break the world apart.
"You came back."
She buried her face against his shoulder.
"I promised I would."
For several long moments, nothing else existed. The battle. The prophecy. The enemy waiting beyond the walls. None of it mattered. Only this. Only them.
When Rowan finally stepped back, she reached up and rested a hand against Corvin's cheek.
"I remember."
His heart stopped.
"You...remember everything?"
She smiled sadly.
"No."
"Not everything."
"But enough."
She turned toward Fenrir.
"You never stopped looking for me."
The ancient wolf lowered his head.
"Never."
She smiled at Taryn.
"You'll lead them well."
Taryn blinked.
"I hope so."
"I know so."
Jess stepped forward next. For a moment neither woman spoke.
Then Rowan wrapped her in a fierce embrace.
"You found your light."
Jess laughed through tears.
"I had help."
She looked over her shoulder at Malric. He smiled sheepishly.
"I may have been a little stubborn."
"A little?" Taryn muttered, earning the first genuine laugh anyone had shared in days.
Even Fenrir chuckled. For one beautiful moment... The fear lifted.
Then the stranger spoke again.
"I'm glad."
Everyone turned toward him. His expression was unreadable.
"Now this can finally end."
Rowan stepped away from Corvin.
"No."
The single word echoed across the sanctuary. The stranger tilted his head.
"No?"
She shook her head.
"It doesn't end today."
"And you don't get to decide how my story finishes."
The golden light surrounding the sanctuary brightened. Not because Rowan was unleashing unimaginable power. Because every person behind her stepped forward. Corvin stood at her side. Jess beside Malric. Fenrir beside Taryn.Lyra and the First Guard drew their blades. The wolves moved into formation. No one stood behind Rowan anymore. They stood beside her.
She looked at the stranger one last time.
"You've spent centuries trying to divide us."
She reached for Corvin's hand. He took it immediately.
"You've already lost."
For the first time... The stranger's calm expression faltered. Because he finally understood. The thing he had feared all along... Was never Rowan alone. It was what she inspired in everyone around her. And that... Could never be erased.
