Chapter 400
Chapter 400
Raymond's brows furrowed, his voice cold and clear. "Brynn, it's work hours. What do you think you're doing as an intern? What do you mean by saying these things? Or did I give you the wrong impression before?"
That last line was a deliberate warning from Raymond, aimed at reminding her of the things she said to Emily last night.
Instantly, Brynn's heart tightened. She had a feeling Raymond knew something.
But she still played dumb, forcing herself to stay calm.
"Mr. Carter... I don't know what you're talking about. Whatever misunderstanding you have about me, I don't want you to be cold to me. You've been really distant today. If I've done something wrong, please tell me. I need to know."
Raymond's lips formed a straight line, his tone emotionless. "Brynn, don't test my patience. I'll say it again: you're just an intern. Your job is to do your work well. Anything beyond that is none of your business. Know your place. You don't want me to fire you, do you?"
The mention of being fired made Brynn's eyes widen in shock. She grew nervous. "I'm sorry, Mr. Carter. Please don't fire me."
Raymond put down his pen and leaned back in his chair, his voice still devoid of warmth.
"Since last night, you've been apologizing for your mistakes, but you keep making them. Apologizing without changing is pointless. If I gave you the wrong impression, I apologize. I only saw you as a newbie, like a little sister. Clearly, my actions misled you. But that won't happen again. So, either do your job properly, or don't blame me for being harsh."
At that moment, Brynn felt like her heart was being torn apart, a heavy pain gripping her chest.
Outside the door, Emily listened quietly, a hint of satisfaction in her eyes.
The man she had her eyes on was indeed the right choice.
Brynn's heart ached, and she was terrified.
She stammered, unable to speak, standing there like a fool.
Emily decided it was time to step in, to "rescue" Brynn from her embarrassment.
She pushed the door open and called out affectionately, "Honey, I'm here."
Seeing Brynn, Emily said deliberately, "Oh, Brynn, you're here too. Am I interrupting your work? I'll just sit on the couch and wait. You two carry on."
Emily walked to the couch, opened a box of exquisite desserts, revealing an array of beautiful treats.
Brynn was startled by Emily's sudden entrance, her cheeks flushing red with shame, feeling like she wanted to disappear.
Raymond smiled faintly, his expression softening as he looked at Emily.
"I'm done here. You brought desserts? Let me see what you picked." Ignoring Brynn, Raymond walked over to Emily and sat beside her.
Emily glanced at Brynn and said, "Brynn is still waiting for you. Don't mind me. If there's work to discuss, go ahead."
Raymond replied calmly, "There's no work to discuss."
Brynn stood there awkwardly, trying to find a way to ease the tension, but her embarrassment made every move clumsy.
She forced herself to say, "Mrs. Carter, there's... nothing else. I'll leave now."
Brynn had hoped Emily might invite her to share the desserts, but as she left the office and closed the door, Emily said nothing.
She clenched her fists, feeling deeply humiliated. She realized she had been foolish.
But she didn't leave immediately. Instead, she stood by the door, listening.
Inside, Emily and Raymond exchanged a knowing look. They both knew Brynn was eavesdropping, as there were no footsteps indicating she had left.
Emily's mischievous side emerged. She picked up a dessert and said sweetly, "Honey, try this one I picked."
She fed it to Raymond, who understood her intent.
He took a bite and commented, "Not bad. My wife's choices are always good."
This scene didn't make Emily feel happy. Instead, she felt it was all an act for Brynn's benefit.
Once Brynn left, everything would return to normal.
The more Emily thought about it, the more uncomfortable she felt. She stuffed a large piece of tart into her mouth, but it was too much, and the crust was too crumbly, causing her to choke.
Raymond got up, poured her a glass of water, and gently patted her back as she drank.
"Take it easy. Why are you in such a hurry?"
After coughing and drinking a large gulp of water, Emily felt better. She thought the tart's crust had gone up her nose.
She grumbled, "It's all your fault."
Raymond raised an eyebrow, half-smiling. "My fault?"
"Yes, it's your fault. Your bad idea." Emily pouted, a hint of frustration in her voice.
Raymond seemed to understand her meaning. He smiled, kissed her forehead, and whispered in her ear, "Baby, you don't think I'm pretending to care about you, do you?"
Emily responded without hesitation, "Isn't that the case?"
Raymond chuckled, wiping the crumbs from her mouth gently. His actions were tender, but his words were blunt.
"Wife, I always thought you were a dignified woman. But lately, I've realized you're sometimes just a simple girl. But I like your simplicity. It makes me love you even more."
