Chapter 389

Hearing this, Emily finally realized something was off. After thinking it over, she noticed that most of what Brynn was saying could potentially ruin her relationship with Raymond.

It was fortunate that Emily was calm and composed, unlike many other women who might have seen Brynn's behavior as a direct provocation and lashed out.

Even if Brynn was foolish, Emily didn't think she could be that foolish.

So, what exactly was Brynn trying to convey?

Was she trying to show that Raymond treated her well? That he gave her special attention? Or was she testing the waters of Emily and Raymond's marriage?

If Emily had a bad temper, she could have kicked Brynn out of the car and had Raymond fire her by now.

After thinking it over, Emily still felt something was off. She didn't believe Brynn could be so naive. This behavior was no different from a gold digger provoking someone's wife.

And Emily wasn't one to beat around the bush. She decided to ask directly, "Brynn, just say what you mean. What are you trying to tell me with all this?"

Faced with Emily's directness, Brynn trembled, her legs weak, unable to meet Emily's gaze.

But Emily pressed on, "I won't do anything to you. It's just the two of us here. If you have something to say or any thoughts, just tell me. I won't tell Raymond."

Hearing this, Brynn finally looked up at Emily. Her brows furrowed, fingers tapping the table, her eyes darting around nervously, sometimes looking at the courtyard, sometimes scanning the surroundings, clearly conflicted.

Her eyes flickered with uncertainty, as if she was grappling with a difficult decision.

After a few seconds, she said, "Mrs. Carter, I do have something to tell you."

"Go ahead, what is it?" Emily asked calmly.

Brynn clasped her hands on her lap, her gaze unsteady, her mind in turmoil.

"Mrs. Emily Carter, I feel that Mr. Raymond Carter is really, really good to me. So good that... I can't accept it... I even think... he..."

Brynn couldn't bring herself to finish, but Emily could. She bluntly said, "You mean you suspect Raymond likes you, right?"

Brynn was startled by Emily's straightforwardness. Anxiety and unease flickered in her eyes, as if she was searching for a glimmer of hope, yet filled with inner conflict.

After a moment, she nodded reluctantly, "Yes... Mrs. Carter, I know you might think I'm being presumptuous, but what I said is true. I just want to do my job well, and I don't want to think about anything else."

Hearing Brynn's words, Emily's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, countless ideas flashing through her mind, yet she felt lost and melancholic.

Her heart was like a stormy sea, unable to calm down.

"Even if what you said is true, why did you still come to take care of me?" Emily asked.

Brynn was taken aback. She bit her lip, "Because I wanted a chance to tell you this, Mrs. Carter. Before anything happens, I wanted to let you know because I don't want to lose my job."

Watching Brynn's expression, Emily couldn't tell if she was being truthful.

"Do you have any thoughts about this?" Emily asked again.

"What do you mean?" Brynn looked nervous.

Emily smiled faintly, "Nothing, just curious."

Although Emily didn't know everything, she was sure of one thing: Brynn was trying to say that Raymond had feelings for her.

Whether Brynn was interested or not, that was another matter.

After all, since Emily had known Raymond, she hadn't seen any woman reject him, even though he was now a married man.

At that moment, Raymond came out of the restaurant carrying bags of food.

Brynn moved to open the car door to help, but Emily said calmly, "You just said all that, and now you want to help him? Don't you think that will make him think more about you?"

Brynn paused, then said, "Mrs. Carter, thank you for your concern, but I need to do my job well regardless."

With that, Brynn opened the car door and ran towards Raymond. Just as she was about to reach him, she slipped and fell towards him. Fortunately, Raymond caught her with his arm, preventing her from hitting the ground face-first.

Brynn gasped, "That was close."

Raymond chuckled, "Can you be more careful? This isn't the first time, is it?"

Brynn blushed, touching her head, "Yes, it seems like you always catch me, Mr. Carter. I'm really sorry."

"It's fine, just be more careful next time."

Brynn took the bags from Raymond, curious, "Mr. Raymond Carter, you got so much good food. You really treat Mrs. Emily Carter well."

Raymond instinctively looked towards the car where Emily was sitting. Through the window, their eyes met, and he raised an eyebrow at her, while Emily's expression remained calm.

Raymond didn't pay much attention to the small detail. He told Brynn, "It's all Emily's favorite. Put it in the trunk."

"Okay..."

Once in the car, Raymond turned to Emily, "Are you sure you're feeling okay? If so, let's go home."

Emily remained composed and nodded, "Yes, let's go home. I don't want to go back to the hospital."

Raymond smiled.

Back at Serenity Estates, Raymond carried Emily to their room, gently laying her on the bed and covering her with a blanket. "I'll go heat up the food. It will take about ten minutes. Just rest here."

"I'm not that badly hurt. It's not even a scratch. I can do it," Emily said, exasperated.

"Don't argue. I want you to rest. No matter what, you're still injured. That bookshelf could have seriously hurt you. Just be thankful you're okay."
