Chapter 15 Anthony, What’s on your mind?
Upon returning to the table, Ashley hands Amelia a plate of spicy lobster, which Amelia struggles to handle due to not being used to spicy food. Anthony, who is on a date with Ashley, also places a peeled shrimp in Amelia's plate, causing confusion and concern.
Ashley questions Anthony about their past acquaintance, and Anthony confirms that he knows them both from school.
Ashley playfully suggests that Anthony has a crush on Amelia, causing an awkward exchange of looks between Anthony and Amelia.
The tension in the air is palpable, and Amelia can sense that something is not right in this situation.
"Not a fan of this situation at all. What's going on? Wasn't he supposed to be on a date with Ashley? Why is he getting involved with me now?"
The smile on Ashley's face slowly faded, and her expression turned serious.
"Anthony, you're talking to me, so why do you keep looking at Amelia?"
"Well..."
Anthony stuttered, but his eyes seemed to have a mind of their own and drifted back to Amelia.
Amelia held Ashley's hand, wanting to explain, to reassure her that she really didn't know this person before.
Ashley was her best friend, and she didn't want any misunderstandings to arise because of this guy.
Ashley ignored Amelia and looked at Anthony, asking, "So, you like Amelia?"
Anthony looked at the table full of lobster, nodded gently, and then looked apologetically at Ashley.
"I'm sorry, I know you two have a good relationship, so seeing you again makes me especially happy."
"Amelia, why aren't you listening?"
A deep, low male voice suddenly interrupted Anthony, causing everyone to turn around and see a man in a black suit walking straight towards their table.
He was tall and upright, with his tie slightly loosened, but not appearing disheveled. His sharp eyes scanned the table full of red peppers before landing on Amelia.
Amelia immediately stood up, lowering her gaze slightly.
"Sir, Mr. Kingsley, you...you're here?"
She clasped her hands together, looking somewhat guilty.
Amelia herself didn't know why she felt guilty. Her relationship with this Damien didn't really matter. They just had an unexpected baby together, and they might not have any further interaction after the baby was born.
Unable to understand, Amelia attributed it to Mr. Kingsley's strong presence. She felt intimidated by his aura as a small individual.
Ashley and Anthony also stood up.
Ashley noticed that Amelia seemed afraid of this man, and alarm bells started ringing in her mind.
She instinctively took a step forward and stood in front of Amelia, asking Damien, "Excuse me, who are you? What did you mean just now?"
Anthony stared at Damien's face for a while, feeling that this person looked somewhat familiar, but couldn't recall who he was. Hearing him call Amelia by her name earlier also made him slightly annoyed, so he spoke up as well.
"Mister, whoever you are, it's impolite to address a girl like that."
Damien glanced at Anthony, his eyes filled with scrutiny and a hint of hostility that only Anthony could feel.
"And who are you?"
Anthony smiled and was about to introduce himself, but Damien said indifferently, "It doesn't matter."
He walked straight to Amelia and extended his hand to her, "Let’s go home."
Amelia instinctively grabbed his sleeve, Damien was pleased with her actions, and his cold face finally softened a bit.
Then he looked at Ashley and asked Amelia, "Is this your friend?"
Amelia nodded and quickly replied, "Yes, this is Ashley, Ashley is my best friend. We have been classmates since middle school."
She smiled at Ashley again.
"Ashley, this is Mr. Kingsley. I...," Amelia immediately pursed her lips. She couldn't mention that she was living at Mr. Kingsley's house now. She was used to being casual in front of Ashley and almost blurted it out.
Damien raised an eyebrow and lightly touched Amelia's palm with his finger as he introduced Ashley, "She is currently working for me. She is my employee."
Ashley looked surprised and said, "Amelia, you got a job? Weren't you supposed to work at the store as your mom wanted? I even told you that you should find a job outside, at least you won't have to endure your mom's anger. This is really great, you finally realized it."
Amelia glanced at Damien, her eyes filled with gratitude. She gave a vague response to Ashley, afraid that she might accidentally reveal too much. Anthony watched the three of them chatting happily, and his expression darkened slightly, but he tried hard to restrain himself and maintained a polite demeanor towards Amelia.
"Amelia, didn't you just finish taking the college entrance exam? Why are you working already? Is it part-time? Actually, if you want a part-time job during the holidays, I can introduce you. You can earn more than two thousand dollars a month, and if you work for two months, you can earn four thousand dollars. How much are you earning now? If it doesn't work out, you can come to my friend's place."
This statement was a bit inappropriate, especially in front of Damien.
Amelia couldn't help but furrow her brows. She realized that Anthony, whom she thought was refined and cultured, was not as she had imagined. Damien glanced at him sideways, about to speak.
However, Amelia spoke first. "Thank you for your kind offer, but I'm fine now. Don't bother yourself...”
Anthony's face instantly flushed red. Amelia really didn't give him face in front of so many people.
Even if he had manners, he couldn't maintain them at this moment.
He forced a smile and said, "Alright, I understand."
After he finished speaking, he was about to leave, but Damien spoke up. "A two-thousand-dollar salary is not enough to cover the expenses for her to have a decent meal. Young man, you have a long way to go."
Anthony froze for a moment, slowly turned around, and paused his gaze on the hand that Amelia had been holding Damien's sleeve with. Then he turned and walked away.
Amelia looked worriedly at Ashley. This person was Ashley's crush, and Ashley had called her earlier, saying that she wanted to go on a date with him.
