Chapter 39 The Warning
Clara noticed his gaze and instinctively slipped her phone back into her bag.
However, in the next moment, he snatched it away again.
Clara frowned and reached out to grab it back, but Matthew was quicker. "Matthew!"
Her frustrated shout drew the attention of nearby passersby.
Matthew cast a casual glance around, and the onlookers quickly averted their eyes.
"What are you shouting for?" he sneered, holding the phone high out of her reach.
"Got something to hide?"
Clara's brow furrowed in irritation. "Give it back," she demanded, her face full of annoyance.
As she spoke, the crisp sound of the phone unlocking filled the air.
Matthew began scrolling through the open document, and his expression darkened after reading just a few lines.
'The accident at the chemical plant was so severe, and her injuries were so serious, yet she still dared to go. She really doesn't value her own life,' he wondered. angrily.
"You really can't wait to get yourself killed."
Matthew growled, his voice tinged with a barely detectable hint of concern.
Clara extended her hand towards him with a cold expression, her tone firm. "Mr. Garcia, my affairs have nothing to do with you anymore. Please refrain from handling my personal belongings."
Upon seeing her dodge his question, Matthew's anger suddenly dissipated.
He stared intently at her for a few seconds before handing the phone back to her without a word.
"Are you sure you want to go?"
This question made Clara's heart skip a beat. She looked up and met his eyes, unable to discern his thoughts, but she nodded silently.
"I already promised Mr. Ramirez that I would go," she said.
Clara had always valued her promises. Unless she was physically incapable, she would always keep her word.
Upon hearing this, Matthew said nothing more.
Clara quickly closed the document on her phone, determined to prevent Matthew from reading any further.
She glanced at her phone for a moment, then looked up at him solemnly. "The documents are confidential. Mr. Garcia, you need to be careful not to leak them. Even with your immense influence, Medical University will hold both you and me accountable."
Matthew wasn't accustomed to this side of Clara at all.
The woman who used to be by his side, showing vulnerability and speaking softly, seemed to have completely disappeared.
This contrast unsettled Matthew deeply, but he couldn't deny that this new Clara was intriguing in a way that captivated him.
"I'm well aware," he replied, finally reassuring Clara as she prepared to leave in her wheelchair.
Once again, someone else controlled the wheelchair.
Matthew glanced at the joystick and promptly disconnected the battery. "Don't forget that you'll be coming with me to see Grandpa later."
As Clara considered this, her tightly furrowed brow relaxed.
Her gaze was drawn involuntarily to the shadows lengthened by the moonlight, the two figures standing close together.
Once, this would have been a deeply stunning scene.
But now, everything had changed.
She had truly had enough of playing house.
"Please, just play along with me in front of Grandpa, to make him feel better," he said. "I'd appreciate it."
Sensing Matthew's softened attitude behind her, Clara's heartstrings trembled for a moment.
Though Matthew appeared cold and unfeeling on the outside, when it came to Andrew and family, even the toughest of men would soften.
He was no exception.
Clara fiddled idly with the charm hanging from her bag. "Since Mr. Andrew already knows about our divorce, what else are you trying to hide?"
She didn't believe for a moment that someone as astute as Andrew wouldn't notice the tension between them.
"Mr. Andrew is always astute. You won't be able to hide it from him," Clara remarked pointedly.
Matthew understood Clara's implication well enough.
But now, he couldn't think of a better way.
"Let's go to the hospital first."
Seeing David pull up at the door, Matthew ignored Clara's attempts to stop him, swiftly lifting her up and striding out.
This scene caught the eyes of many guests in the banquet hall, who began speculating about the true nature of their relationship.
Watching their figures disappear through the doorway, Lauren turned to Lillian with a meaningful glance, smiling as she spoke with a hint of sarcasm. "Ms. Edwards now shines just with the title of Sovereign. It seems no one else can measure up."
"Perhaps Mr. Andrew knew all along when he forced them into marriage. Some people just start off on the wrong foot and can't hope to catch up later. Wouldn't you agree, Ms. Baker?"
Lillian listened, her hand gripping tightly, nails digging into the flesh.
"Mrs. Scott, you're right. Ms. Edwards is undoubtedly talented, but as Matthew's future wife, mere talent isn't enough," Lillian replied, struggling to uphold her dignity.
Yet, Lauren trampled on the last shreds of her pride with a sudden burst of laughter.
Observing Lillian's expression, Lauren composed herself and waved dismissively. "Ms. Baker, you're amusing. If Clara, as outstanding as she is, isn't qualified to be Matthew's wife, then who possibly could be?"
Each mocking glance conveyed how much Lillian fell short compared to Clara.
Enraged, Lillian's face twisted. She was about to find an excuse to leave when Lauren interrupted, taking a sip of her drink as she changed the subject. "Ms. Baker, my daughter, doted on by us and sheltered from the harsh realities of life since childhood, is very innocent and always rushes to help her friends, only to be taken advantage of and manipulated."
Lillian's face turned pale, and she hastily denied it. "I didn't do it."
"Whether you did or not, I know, and you certainly know."
Lauren sneered, her sharp gaze locked onto Lillian like a venomous snake ready to strike.
It seemed that if Lillian dared to make another move, Lauren would bite her neck before Lillian could react, and she would die on the spot.
Seeing the fear spreading in Lillian's eyes, Lauren's heart was filled with mockery.
Lauren had thought Lillian was quite formidable, but she didn't expect her to have such a timid heart.
Riley was really foolish to be used by such a person.
"Such a thing is not allowed to happen again. Although the Scott family is not as influential as the Baker family, if Mr. Andrew finds out about your affair, I'm sure I won't need to take action."
Lauren left a warning and didn't bother to say more.
She walked away, pleased to talk to other people.
Lillian was left alone, so scared that she collapsed to the ground.
Lillian thought about what would happen if Andrew found out about this, and she trembled all over.
"No, I can't let Mr. Andrew know. If he finds out, I won't be able to become Matthew's wife anymore."
Lillian thought of this and hurriedly sent a text message to Lauren, and left the party in a daze.
As soon as she sat in the car and recovered a bit, she received an anonymous text message reminder.
"What!"
Lillian read the message and immediately started the car and rushed to the hospital.
Matthew actually took Clara to meet Andrew.
'That bitch Clara will definitely report to Mr. Andrew. I must rush over to stop it,' she wondered.
