Chapter 147 New face
Chapter 147 New face
"This face is perfect, Casey," a man in a white coat whispered, adjusting the surgical lamp beside the large mirror.
Monica stroked the smooth skin of her cheek, completely devoid of the burn scars that had once ruined her life. Her eyes stared sharply at her reflection. "Not just perfect, Doctor. This face is my entry ticket."
The doctor nodded softly, closing the medical chart in his hands. "The skin reconstruction process at this Swiss clinic went according to plan. There is no trace of Monica left there."
"Monica died in that fire," she replied coldly, running her fingers through the honey-blonde hair that now cascaded softly over her shoulders. "Now there is only Casey Lauren."
She rose from the chair in front of the mirror, walking down the quiet practice room. On a long wooden table, a small voice recorder was running, playing back a recording of a professional nanny's conversation.
"Good morning, Madam Miska. I am Casey Lauren," she said, her voice stiff.
Casey shook her head, pressing the pause button on the recorder. She took a deep breath and adjusted her expression before the small mirror.
"Too harsh," she muttered to herself.
She regulated her breathing, relaxed her shoulders, and tried again with a much softer, warmer tone. "Good morning, Madam Miska. I am Casey Lauren. It is a pleasure to meet you today."
"Excellent," said a middle-aged man in neat attire standing in the corner of the room. He was the intonation and posture coach she had hired specifically for this. "Now try showing how you would greet a young child."
Casey bent down slightly, bringing her gaze level as if looking at a child in front of her. Her eyes beamed with a natural motherly warmth, her lips curving into a modest smile.
"Hello, sweet Emily. My name is Casey. Would you like to build a sandcastle together in the garden?" Casey asked, her tone cheerful yet soothing.
The coach clapped softly. "Perfect. No sharp gestures or hateful glares like two weeks ago. You have mastered your body."
"I have to," Casey replied firmly. The gentle smile vanished instantly, replaced by a blank expression. "A single mistake in my tone could make Evan suspicious."
Casey walked over to the desk in her hideaway apartment. Neatly gathered on the table were thick stacks of documents bearing official stamps from various international institutions.
She picked up a bundle of child care credentials from a prestigious European institute, running her fingers over the thick paper.
"Are all these documents verified in the central agency's system?" Casey asked her personal assistant, who had just entered carrying a laptop.
"Yes, Miss Lauren," the assistant answered quickly. "Your work history as a nanny for a noble family in England has been seamlessly entered into their database. The reference letters, child psychology certificates, and medical history under the name Casey Lauren are officially registered."
"What about the emergency pediatric care certificate?" Casey pressed, flipping through the sheets in her hand.
"Everything is clean," the assistant stated firmly. "The exclusive agency Evan chose will not find a single discrepancy. These forged documents were crafted by the best."
Casey smiled with satisfaction. She packed the files into a thick brown envelope, then pressed the electronic application submit button on the laptop screen.
"The application is sent," Casey said quietly as the status bar turned green.
She walked toward the large board mounted on the apartment wall. It was covered with photos of Rose and Evan's family, the floor plan of the main residence, and the children's daily schedules. Casey took a red pushpin and jabbed it right above Rose and Evan's wedding photo.
"They think they won after that crisis," Casey whispered coldly, touching Rose's face with the tip of her sharp fingernail.
"What is your first move once you get into the house?" the assistant asked from behind.
"To become the most indispensable person there," Casey answered without hesitation. She turned her head slightly, her eyes flashing as she looked at her assistant. "I will win over the children first. Once Emily and Alan depend on me, Rose will have no reason to let me go."
"What about Evan? He has sharp instincts," the assistant warned.
"Evan is busy with work, and Rose's absence from the house is my biggest opening," Casey said, sliding Evan's photo across the board. "I do not need to attack from the outside. I only need to become the invisible thorn inside their home."
She leaned against the edge of the table, looking at the planning board with steady breaths. The revenge that had burned in her chest for so long had now turned cold and calculated.
"That seemingly perfect marriage will break apart on its own," Casey said softly. "Without anyone realizing I was the one who lit the fuse."
The phone on the table suddenly vibrated loudly, displaying an email notification from the exclusive nanny agency.
Casey reached for the phone immediately and opened it. Her eyes scanned the lines of the official message on the screen.
Her assistant stepped closer, curious. "What does it say?"
Casey slowly lowered her phone, a faint, cold smile gracing her lips.
"The agency just scheduled my face-to-face interview with Rose for tomorrow morning."
