The news of Keegan’s confession spread through the kingdom faster than anyone expected. By the time the sun climbed into the sky, every warrior, elder, servant, and villager had heard that Keegan had stood in the great hall and admitted to causing the king’s death.

Some people believed it right away. Others stood in small groups and spoke quietly, shaking their heads. The story felt wrong to them. The timing felt strange. Nothing about Keegan’s behavior in the past matched what he had confessed.

In the main dining hall, two warriors leaned close to each other.

“I do not trust this,” one whispered.

“He said it was an accident,” the other replied. “But he looked scared. His voice sounded forced.”

“Kevin stood beside him the whole time,” the first warrior said. “Why would the Alpha need so many guards behind him if the confession was real?”

They paused as more pack members walked by. No one wanted to be caught speaking about the Alpha. Still, the doubts grew. People lowered their voices, but they kept talking.

In another corner of the palace, three elders gathered in a private room. They locked the door and checked the windows before sitting.

Elder Rovan folded his arms. “The story does not add up. Keegan said he pushed the king during an argument. But the king’s injuries were not like that.”

“The healer said the king died from a strike to the head,” Elder Mira said quietly. “But Keegan said he only shoved him. Something is off.”

Elder Bran tapped the table. “We must be careful. Kevin will not like anyone questioning the confession.”

They exchanged tense looks. Everything felt dangerous now. The palace was no longer a place of peace. It felt heavy with secrets.

Rosa felt that heaviness as she walked through the halls with her baby in her arms. She had not slept at all. Keegan would barely look at her. He kept saying he was fine, but she saw the truth in his eyes. Something had pushed him into making that confession, and she wanted to know what.

She entered their room and found him sitting on the edge of the bed, his shoulders shaking. His hands were pressed to his face.

“Keegan,” she said softly.

He did not answer.

She sat beside him. “Talk to me. Please.”

“I can’t,” he whispered. “I just can’t.”

She touched his arm gently. “I know you didn’t do this. I know you. Something forced you to say those words.”

Keegan stood up too quickly. “You do not understand. I cannot put you or the children in danger.”

Rosa’s heart tightened. “Danger from who? Kevin?”

Keegan froze, then turned away.

“That means yes,” she said. “What did he do to you?”

Keegan shook his head. “Rosa, I cannot speak. If I say anything, he will—”

He stopped himself. He felt sick. His chest hurt. His breath shook.

Rosa stood up and faced him. “I am your wife. I have the right to know. I cannot help you if you shut me out.”

Keegan looked up at her. His eyes were full of fear, guilt, and pain. “He has something that can destroy us. I have to protect you.”

Rosa stepped closer. “Let me help you protect us.”

His voice broke. “I do not know how.”

Before she could respond, there was a knock on the door. Keegan flinched. Rosa quickly moved to the crib and placed the baby gently inside before she answered it.

A guard stood there. “Alpha Kevin requests Prince Keegan’s presence.”

Keegan swallowed hard. “Tell him I will be there.”

The guard nodded and left.

Rosa grabbed Keegan’s arm. “Do not go alone. Something is wrong with him.”

“I have no choice,” Keegan said. “If I do not go, he will come here.”

Rosa’s breath caught. She let go of his arm slowly. “Please be careful.”

Keegan nodded, though he did not feel confident at all.

While this happened, not everyone stayed silent.

In a quiet chamber deep inside the old wing of the palace, an elderly man sat at a wooden desk. His name was Lord Cedric, an advisor who had served the late king for many years. He had gray hair, a tired face, and sharp eyes that saw more than most people realized.

When he heard about Keegan’s confession, he leaned back in his chair and whispered to himself, “This is not the truth. I know that boy. He is strong, but he would never hide the king’s death unless he was forced.”

He reached for an old book where he kept notes about the king’s final months. He flipped through the pages and stopped at one entry.

The king plans to speak with Kevin privately tonight. He says it is important.

Cedric tapped the page. “This is the same night he died. Kevin was the last person to see him.”

Cedric stood up slowly. His joints cracked, but he pushed through the pain. He left the room and walked down the long hallway. He knew what he needed to do.

He had to investigate again.

Meanwhile, the whispers in the kingdom grew even heavier.

Several warriors met in the training yard. They stood close together, pretending to clean weapons.

“I saw Keegan during the confession,” one said. “He looked like someone had put a blade to his back.”

“Kevin forced him,” another replied quietly. “You could see it in his eyes.”

“We must be careful,” a third warned. “If Kevin hears us, we might disappear.”

Despite the warning, the worry did not fade.

In the servants’ quarters, women gathered to talk while folding clothes.

“This is not right,” one whispered. “Keegan always respected the king.”

“Kevin changed after he became Alpha,” another said. “He acts like he is afraid of something.”

The whispers reached every corner of the kingdom.

As evening came, Rosa moved through the palace with a sense of growing panic. She visited the library, looking for any clues that might explain why Keegan confessed. She checked old records, the king’s old letters, and notes from council meetings.

A friendly warrior named Doran quietly approached her.

“My princess,” he said softly. “I heard what happened. I think something is wrong.”

Rosa looked up. “I know. I can feel it.”

Doran nodded. “Kevin has changed. He threatens people. He sends guards away without reason. Many of us do not trust him anymore.”

Rosa clenched her hands. “Can you help me find the truth?”

Doran looked around before he answered. “I will try. But be careful. Kevin watches everyone.”

Rosa thanked him and continued her search.

Back in the great hall, Keegan tried to stay strong, but his body was exhausted. His hands trembled. He felt cold even though the hall was warm.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Kevin holding that sealed box. He heard Kevin’s voice saying, If you speak, I will destroy everything you love.

The memory made his stomach twist.

At midnight, he returned to his room. Rosa hurried to him.

“Did he hurt you?” she asked.

“No,” Keegan said. “But he wants to meet again tomorrow.”

Rosa stepped closer. “Keegan, someone else is investigating. An old advisor named Cedric.”

Keegan lifted his head. “Cedric? He served my father.”

“Yes,” Rosa said. “He believes something is wrong. He thinks you were forced.”

For the first time that day, hope flickered in Keegan’s eyes.

But it faded quickly. “If Cedric learns too much, Kevin will target him too.”

Rosa held Keegan’s hand tightly. “Then we protect Cedric. We protect each other. We are not alone anymore.”

Keegan looked at her for a long moment. He felt the weight in his chest, but he also felt something lifting, even a little.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

Rosa touched his cheek. “I will not let him break you.”

Keegan pulled her into a tired embrace. He did not know what tomorrow would bring, but he felt stronger with her beside him.

Far across the palace, Kevin stood on his balcony, looking down at the dark kingdom. His eyes were cold.

“The confession worked,” he said to himself. “But the whispers must stop.”

He turned away from the view and walked inside, smirking to himself.
