Keegan moved silently through the dim palace corridors. He had memorized the layout of the palace, every corner and every hidden path. He knew the risks of being caught. Kevin had already shown how far he would go to protect his secrets. But Keegan had no choice. He had to know the truth about their father’s death.
The king’s old study lay at the end of the hallway. Its heavy door creaked faintly as Keegan opened it. Inside, the room smelled of old parchment and polished wood. Dust hung in the air, disturbed only by Keegan’s careful movements. He started with the drawers, pulling them open one by one. He rifled through files, old reports, and letters. His hands trembled slightly from a mix of fear and adrenaline.
He found documents detailing the king’s final days, schedules, and private meetings. One piece of parchment made his heart tighten. It was a note indicating that the king had planned a private meeting with Kevin the night he died. The handwriting was unmistakable. This was confirmation. Kevin had been the last person to see their father alive.
Keegan’s mind raced. He tucked the note carefully into his coat pocket, determined to examine it later. He moved toward the shelves, scanning each book, each ledger. Every corner, every file could hold another clue. He even opened the old personal box the king had kept hidden behind the desk. Nothing else seemed immediately useful, but Keegan’s intuition told him he had barely scratched the surface.
He straightened himself, preparing to leave, when a shadow fell across the doorway. He froze. Kevin stood there, his expression calm, almost cold. The torchlight glinted off his eyes, sharp and alert. Keegan’s pulse jumped. Kevin had been following him quietly, waiting for the exact moment.
“Looking for something?” Kevin’s voice was soft but carried the weight of danger.
Keegan turned fully, meeting his brother’s gaze. “You’re hiding the truth,” he said steadily. “I know you were the last person with Father. I know something happened that night.”
Kevin smiled, slow and chilling. “You think you have the corner on truth?” he said, stepping into the room. “Truth is dangerous, Keegan. Sometimes the truth destroys more than lies ever could.”
He reached behind him and held up the sealed black box Kevin had retrieved from the dungeon. Keegan’s eyes widened. “What is that?” he demanded, taking a cautious step back.
Kevin’s smile widened. “Everything ends tonight,” he said simply. “Everything you think you know, everything you believe about your family… it ends.”
Without waiting for another word, Kevin motioned for Keegan to follow him. The two brothers moved silently through the halls, each step tense with unspoken danger. Kevin’s hand rested lightly on the box, a silent reminder of the power he now held. Keegan felt the weight of it in the room, the way Kevin’s presence pressed against him.
They reached a private chamber far from the main corridors. Kevin pushed the door closed behind them, the lock clicking faintly. Inside, he placed the box on the table, then leaned back against the wall, watching Keegan carefully. “Open your eyes,” Kevin said, and Keegan did.
Kevin lifted the lid slowly, revealing the contents inside. There were letters, sealed notes, and photographs. Keegan’s stomach dropped as Kevin pulled out a document with his name on it, detailing a past mistake he had never revealed. A choice he had made years ago, something he had thought buried, now stared back at him.
Kevin’s voice was calm, almost conversational, but every word carried a threat. “Do you see this, Keegan? This is your life. One wrong move, one act of defiance, and everyone you love will know this secret. Everyone in the pack will know. Your reputation. Your family. Everything you care about.”
Keegan swallowed hard, his chest tightening. “You wouldn’t,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady. “You can’t…”
Kevin’s eyes narrowed. “I can. I will. And I will if you continue digging into your father’s death. You think you can find the truth without consequences? You think I won’t act?”
Keegan’s hands trembled as he realized Kevin was serious. The black box wasn’t just paper and photographs. It was a weapon aimed directly at him, a tool to bend him into submission. Rosa’s warnings echoed in his mind, but he had ignored them in pursuit of the truth.
Kevin stepped closer. “You have two choices, Keegan. Stop this investigation and live your life… or continue and watch everything fall apart. I can ruin you in ways you haven’t even imagined. Your family. Your child. Your home. All of it, gone.”
Keegan shook his head, disbelief and fear battling with his determination. “I… I can’t just stop,” he said. “Father deserves the truth.”
Kevin’s smile faded. He leaned forward, his tone sharp, cold, and commanding. “Then you will lose everything you hold dear. I will make sure of it. Do you understand? One move, and it all ends. This is your life in my hands.”
Keegan’s knees felt weak. He could feel the weight of the decision pressing down on him. Every instinct screamed to fight, but every piece of evidence Kevin held made resistance impossible. He thought of Rosa, of their sleeping child, of the life they had built together. He could not risk it. Not for truth, not for pride.
Kevin watched him, sensing the shift in Keegan’s resolve. He placed one hand on the table, leaning slightly toward him. “There is one way to make this right, at least for the pack,” he said. “One way to make the story believable is so that no one questions the events of that night. You will confess. Publicly. You will say… that during an argument with your father, you acted rashly. That your hand, your words… caused his death.”
Keegan froze. The words hit him like a physical blow. “I… I can’t,” he whispered, his voice breaking.
Kevin’s tone hardened. “You can. Or I will ensure that everyone you love suffers. Rosa. Your child. Even your closest friends. One word from me, and all of it will crumble. You don’t want that, do you?”
Keegan’s hands clenched into fists. He wanted to fight, to run, to scream. But the reality of Kevin’s power pressed down on him. Every exit, every guard, every hidden eye Kevin controlled made escape impossible. He was trapped, cornered by the truth and by the threat hanging over his head.
“I…” Keegan started, his voice faltering. He could see Rosa’s worried face in his mind, her arms around their child, her fear palpable even though she was far away. He could not risk her safety. He could not risk their child.
Kevin’s eyes bore into him. “Say it, Keegan. Confess what happened. Take the blame. Let the pack believe it was you, not me. Protect your family, or let them burn because of your pride.”
Keegan’s body trembled. Every nerve, every thought, every instinct screamed against giving in. But he realized he had no choice. The truth, the pack, and Kevin’s weapon left him with only one option. He could bear the burden, protect Rosa and their child, and keep the kingdom from spiraling into chaos.
“I… I will,” Keegan whispered, his voice hollow. “I will take the blame.”
Kevin’s lips curved into a small, satisfied smile. “Good,” he said. “Now we have an understanding. You will speak. You will confess. And the pack will believe it was an accident. Your father’s death… will be your secret burden.”
Keegan swallowed hard, the weight of the words settling into him. He could feel the future shifting, the responsibility pressing down on his shoulders. He would carry this lie, protect his family, and ensure the kingdom survived. But he also knew this would change everything forever.
Kevin closed the black box and placed it carefully on the table. “Remember,” he said, voice low and dangerous, “every move you make is watched. One wrong step, and everyone you love will pay.”
Keegan nodded silently, the corners of his mind already calculating how he would survive this. How would he carry this burden and still protect those he loved? He had no choice. The kingdom, his family, and his own survival depended on this lie.
Kevin leaned back against the wall, satisfied. “We have an agreement,” he said. “And from this moment, your life belongs to the truth I hold in my hands. Keep the secret. Protect your family. Or watch everything burn.”
Keegan’s chest tightened. He did not speak again. He simply stood there, facing the harsh reality of his situation. The night stretched on, heavy and silent around them. Kevin’s presence was a constant shadow, and the black box on the table was a reminder of the power now wielded over him.
Finally, Kevin moved to the door. “You know what to do, Keegan,” he said, his voice calm but deadly. “Think carefully. One word, one mistake, and everything you love will vanish. Obey… or lose it all.”
Keegan remained silent, with his mind spinning. He had accepted the burden. He had no choice. And he knew the kingdom would never be the same.
