Chapter 75 Match & Eyes
JESSICA
"What?" she looked behind her.
Her jaw dropped in absolute surprise as she let go of the doorknob.
"Oh my God," she said, covering her mouth with her palm and they looked between me and her backside. Her eyes are filled with panic, as if it is the worst thing that has ever happened to her.
"I don't.....I didn't know I was.....God, I don't have pads or tampons with me."
"Don't worry, I have tampons," I said, getting on my feet and walking towards my locker.
"Oh thank you," she said, approaching me.
"God, I seriously didn't know I was on today," she said as I opened my locker and reached for my tampon pack.
"I can't tell how long I have been walking around like this. No wonder those stupid nurses were laughing after I walked past them," she said as I turned to her, extending the tampons to her.
"There were laughing at you?" I asked as she collected the tampons.
"I didn't think they were laughing at me. I thought.....ugh! Those pathetic bitches. Thank you so much for this. I will go change right away." she said, grabbing her bag and heading towards the bathroom.
"You are welcome," I said, sighing as I moved back to the bench and sat on it.
Not long later, the bathroom door opened. Catherine walked out dressed in different scrubs.
She smiled at me for the first time.
I smiled slightly as she walked closer to me and sat next to me.
It felt awkward but okay.
"Here," she said, handing over the pack of tampons to me.
"You can hold it till you get yours."
She smiled. "Thank you."
"You are welcome," I said, lowering my gaze.
"So um....I want to apologize for being an awful colleague to you since you joined us."
I looked at her.
"Trust me, I am not always like that." she defended.
"Really?" I asked.
She nodded.
You look like you are always like that to me.
"It's just...." She paused, heaving a sigh. "I barely have friends. People hardly like me. So I chose to be mean first."
I furrowed my brows slightly.
"It has been like that since high school days," she said, resting her back on the counter and staring at nowhere in particular.
"People barely liking you shouldn't be the reason for being mean to others. What if you end up pushing away good people?"
She looked at me.
I stared at her.
She nodded. "Good people like you."
I lowered my gaze. I am not good.
Not after what I did.
"I mean I have been nothing but bossy and mean to you, yet you told me about my blood stains and gave me your tampons. I thought Ash and the other nurses were my friends but those nurses laughed at me without telling me I have blood stains and Ash is a fucking 'PICK ME'. All she knows is that jerk boyfriend of hers." she said, heaving a sigh.
I looked at her.
"It is almost like her purpose on earth is to please him. Can you believe that?" she asked, looking at me. "She doesn't care about her work or family. All she lives and breathes is Justin." She rolled her eyes, folding her hands.
"It is not a bad thing to be so in love, Catherine," I said, feeling my heart react to my own words.
She scoffed. "Yeah right. Hers is abnormal."
I lowered my gaze as uncle filled my thoughts again.
"What's going on with you though?" she asked. I noticed you have been moody for the past two days."
I looked at her. "You noticed?"
"Yeah. Okay, yes I have been mean but I notice things. And to be honest, I only pick on you because I enjoy doing so."
I raised my brows.
"I mean you are not defensive and you barely talk back."
I raised my brows again.
"Not that it is weakness," she defended. "It is kinda unique."
I scoffed slightly.
"I said kinda."
"Yeah, sure," I said, lowering my gaze.
"But seriously, what is wrong?"
I shook my head.
"Let me guess, boy trouble?" she asked, making my heart react.
"I can tell a boy trouble when I see one," she said.
I fiddled with my towel, contemplating telling her.
"Come on, tell me."
I shook my head. "It's nothing."
"Seriously?"
I kept staring at the towel in my hands.
"Well, you look like you need someone to talk to. I am all ears."
I looked at her.
She raised her brows.
I do need someone to talk to.
"What did the jerk do?" she asked, taking me aback.
She nodded. "Any boy who makes a girl moody and unhappy is a jerk. And trust me, I hate jerks. Now spill."
I lowered my gaze, recalling all the mean things Uncle had said to me. That night was the worst.
"He is so mean to me."
She scoffed.
"He is always mean. I don't know what I did wrong."
"I bet you did nothing wrong. Stop saying that."
My heart tightened as I recalled that night.
"I uh.....I gave him my innocence." I said, looking at her. "He treated me like dirt the next morning"
Her face twitched. "What a bastard."
I felt tears coming, making me lower my gaze.
"He is a moron and a renowned jerk. Like who does he think he is?"
My dad's best friend.
My situation is terrible.
She held my hand, making me look at her.
"Listen, losing your innocence to the wrong man happens but it is not the end of the world. It is okay to feel pain but do you know what is better?"
I shook my head slightly.
"Getting back on your feet and being the best version of yourself."
A tear rolled down my face as I stared at her.
"Enough tears," she said, wiping my cheek. "I bet you have been doing that for the past two days. No wonder you are seated here."
"It really hurts," I sobbed as more tears flowed beyond my control.
"Alright, bring it in," she said, opening her arms and wrapping me in a hug.
I sobbed bitterly as my heart bled.
"It's okay." she caressed my hair and back. She unwrapped me and made me look at her as she held my shoulders.
"Look, Jessica, enough crying. What has happened, has happened? We can't change the hands of time. You are here crying while he is out there with someone else. Don't waste your time crying for him. Stop giving him so much power."
I sniffled.
"You know the best way to get over a jerk?"
I stared at her.
"Looking prettier, hotter, and another boy."
I furrowed my brows slightly.
She nodded, smirking.
"You are going to make that jerk regret ever treating you like that. He will beg with his knees on the floor for just your attention."
"Will that work?" I asked.
She scoffed. "Of course it will. That is if you are ready to follow all my instructions."
I stared at her.
She raised her brows.
I nodded.
"Good. First things first, we need to work diligently Cause how else will you look prettier and hotter without money?"
I nodded.
"Secondly, you need to change your clothes, wear makeup, and look bold and badass. And lastly, another boy. To get over an Ex, you need another man. A better man." she said, winking at me.
Uncle is.....he is not my ex.
Is he?
"Are you ready?" she asked.
I braced myself and nodded.
"Yes, I am ready."
"Good. Okay, let's head to the OR," she said, getting on her feet and offering her hand.
I placed my hand on hers and got to my feet.
"Fix the tears already. Stop ruining your pretty face. People pay millions to get one. Geez." she said, heading towards the door.
I smiled, wiping my face as I followed her out of the room. We walked along the hallway, heading towards the OR.
I can't believe I just finished speaking to Catherine in that cool way.
I literally told her everything.
I mean, partly everything.
And she.....she didn't judge me.
She wants to help me heal.
I like the idea of making Uncle regret treating me like that.
And making him beg me with his knees on the floor.
God, that sounds impossible.
The uncle Xavier I know can never do that.
It will take a lot to make him do that.
I will just stick to making him regret it.
I hope all Catherine's plans will work.
HOURS LATER.......
"The result is ready." Doctor Judy said, handing over a white envelope to me.
"Thank you," I said, taking it from her. The DNA test result.
"Have a nice day," she said.
"You too," I said, heading out of the office.
Still dressed in my scrubs, I fixed the strap of my bag properly on my shoulder while walking along the hallway and staring at the envelope.
My shift is over and I am heading to my mom's bakery.
I am literally starving.
I can't wait to have some snacks.
Just like I can't wait to see the result.
I opened it and took out the slip as I walked.
I saw a "99.99%" match.
My heart relaxed as I smiled.
I didn't doubt her but this added.
She wasn't lying. She is truly my birth mother.
Of course she is.
She is my biggest blessing.
I am grateful for this.
So grateful.
I folded the slip as I got to the elevator.
I pressed the button on the wall and the doors beeped, opening and revealing.....
Uncle Xavier.
I froze.
He is busy with his phone and Uncle Jason is behind him.
My heart picked up as I stared at him.
He looked up from his phone, locking eyes with me instantly.
My heart raced.
